My friend Alfred made me a very nice blade for a hunting knife and generously gifted it to me (thanks again!). I made the handle out of cotinus and bronze. Cotinus is a bush or little tree and has a beautiful greenish heartwood. It is the only leaf carrying species I know which has a pitch like pine, but in this case it smells like lemon. I had some matching leather laying around for a good sheet, which was hardened for better protection.

I had a piece of curly/knotty cotinus, finish is hardening oil

Pretty work. I love that style blade. The wood is outstanding and the finish work with the brass really sets it off.

Very nice Simon, beautiful job

That's some pretty work! Looks like a handy design as well.

Very nice knife, Simon. Do you have a botanical name for the wood in the handle. It looks like some I have growing at my home.
-
I just Googled it. The common name here is smoke tree. The one I have has purple leaves and purple flowers. I just cut part of it down so I'kk have to go recover some of the wood for handles. Ever use it for bows?

Yeah Pat, that's the tree / bush. Have the same here in my garden. The heartwood color is super nice when cut fresh (bright green).
I haven't used it as bow wood yet. I have two crooked billets seasoning, I will try but they are not on the easy way... we will see!
Thanks for your comments gentlemen!
Glad you like the knife.
