Title: knife with cotinus handle
Post by: simson on December 02, 2016, 03:02:29 am: My friend Alfred made me a very nice blade for a hunting knife and generously gifted it to me (thanks again!). I made the handle out of cotinus and bronze. Cotinus is a bush or little tree and has a beautiful greenish heartwood. It is the only leaf carrying species I know which has a pitch like pine, but in this case it smells like lemon. I had some matching leather laying around for a good sheet, which was hardened for better protection.

I had a piece of curly/knotty cotinus, finish is hardening oil

Yeah Pat, that's the tree / bush. Have the same here in my garden. The heartwood color is super nice when cut fresh (bright green).
I haven't used it as bow wood yet. I have two crooked billets seasoning, I will try but they are not on the easy way... we will see!

Our sumac wood here has multi colored rings that is appealing too.Kinda soft wood though.
