Title: Osage burl knife
Post by: osage outlaw on November 09, 2016, 09:42:26 pm
Stringman sent me a couple of pieces of an osage burl a while back.  I knew they would look great as knife scales.  I've made several knives over the last year but none for myself.  I figured it was about time I fixed that problem.  The steel is from an old saw mill blade that Ozzy gave me.  I annealed it and cut it out on a metal bandsaw.  After I shaped it I hardened it to where a metal file wouldn't cut it.  Then I put it through 2 tempering cycles.  I sanded it to 3000 grit.  I sealed the burl scales with several coats of matte car rim sealer.  I'm going to use that on the next bow that I finish.   I put a slight curve to the sheath to match the shape of the blade.

I'm finding it hard to get good clear pictures of knives.

The sanding work is "ok", but them scales are off the hook!!  >:D >:D

Very nice work on that one buddy, and it feels great carrying a hand made knife when you're out. You're grandkids are gonna enjoy looking at that 50 years from now.

Yes sir, as D-bar said a great feel to that knife. Heavy in the hand for it's size and well balanced, good looking to boot.

Thanks for the compliments guys.  I gave the knife a good test run today by skinning out a deer with it.  It got the job done easily and was still shaving sharp when I was done with it.  It sat for a while with some blood on it.  When I washed it off I noticed the shiny blade was etched a little from the blood.  It gave it a little patina.  Bubby did some research for me and said it must be high carbon/low chromium steel which is good for a knife.  I'm glad it passed the deer test.  I have more knife blanks cut out.  Now I know they are worth finishing up.

I tried to take some pictures that showed the burl scales a little better.

I've got some magnolia burn that I was trying to turn into a bowl before it exploded on the lathe- I think I've got enough to do some scales, I think I'll see if I can get a blank roughed out before thanksgiving and then use my dad's shop to do the heat treating work. This has been inspiring.

Thanks guys.

Beadman,  I've got a lot of osage knife scale material.  I have a feeling most of my knives will have yellow handles.

JacksonCash,  The heat treating isn't very hard.  Khalverson gave me some tips on how to do it.  I made a small gas forge out of a coffee can, plaster of paris, and sand.  I used a propane torch in it to heat treat these.
