Title: Bamboo weathering
Post by: DC on September 28, 2016, 01:38:54 pm
I picked up a couple of pieces of  3-3 1/2" bamboo at the garden center. He gave them to me because they are a somewhat weathered. They are still mostly yellow with some tan/greyish spots. How well does bamboo weather?

It really doesn't take boo long to degrade if not properly stored.

Oh well, I can always use it for quivers and arrow storage. It won't go to waste. And the price was perfect ;D

Scrape the rind off if you aren't sure.

Sorry, I'm not following you. Do you mean if I scrape the rind I can use it for backing?

what if it's still grey when scraped, does it affect its use as backing?

Most people would recommend leaving the rind on and at most just knocking the gloss off before applying a finish.
You can do a bend test with a discolored piece and decide if it has retained tension properties or not. When bamboo starts to break down it really degrades.
