Title: Smoking pipes
Post by: FilipT on September 18, 2016, 03:41:33 pm
I got a while ago side project to work parallel with bows. I made two tobacco pipe bowls. But problem is that I can't think of the way to make the stems. I will not order expensive fiberglass rods nor drill them (also can't do that) so I am thinking about alternatives.

I was thinking about metal pipes to use as a stems. Some non reacting and "healthy" to use stem. I wouldn't put that metal in mouth, but on the other end I would place small mouthpiece made of wood.
Do you guys think its a good idea?
Do you know any alternatives to my idea?

P.S. I will put pictures of bowls tomorrow.

How about sections of cane or bamboo. The center hole is already there and all you have to do is taper one end to fit in a hole drilled in the bowl.

Not that I'm aware of. You could do a Google search.

I have a nice pipe with a wild rose stem. Clay works well also.

You cannot compare long term, occasional smoking tobacco with the effect of sudden poisoning caused by hot smoke coming through poisonous wood.
If you for example were to use elderberry wood, which sounds reasonable at first, because it has natural pith in middle, you would get cyanide poisoning.

It seems that bamboo is a good choice for stem. As its not available here as I want (otherwise I would make own arrows), I'll still look around.

Nice bowl, but I guess I am just not that smart, cause I never thought about any of the steam issues you have brought up.

Do you smoke pipes you made yourself?

P.S. They are bowlS. Bottom one is the billiard style, so shorter stem. Upper is supposed to be churchwarden pipe, so long elegant stem. I would want to put bamboo stem on that one, steam it into nice curve.

I saw a video of a guy making a 3 ply laminated wood stem. Middle ply was split and seperated to form the air passage.

Have you considered antler?
Maple and cherry should be totally non toxic.

I'm sure that Guava, Apple, Cherry, Pear and most of the common fruit tree woods are not toxic , since they're also used for smoking BBQ.

Not having access to antler and Guava (seems like good bow wood!), but I could make from this other woods listed. Thanks all for help

I used River Cain for my steams, guess they were ok, I am still around [O maybe that is what is wrong with me, just a little crazy] Ya I am sure that is it. ;) :)  But seriously I didn't see any ill effects from the Cain steams.  ;)
