I am going to build a new workbench for the shop. I currently have 2 shave horses, 2 saw horses and one small table in my shop. the problem with this is that my tools all congregate on my table, Band saw, table saw, and saw horses. I am planning on a 30 inch wide workbench, that I can mount my "portable" table saw into. What else should I incorporate into it? I wouldn't mind some bench dogs, and a removable "Sacrificial" area for drilling. Thanks for your ideas.

I make all my bench tops with 2x4's or 2x6', whatever I have available. I like it because you can drill into, easily bolt or screw down any tools like my mini lathe and scroll saw. When a board gets too many holes in it, you just replace a board, instead of cutting a whole new sheet of plywood to fit.

You should checkout Paul Sellars on youtube, he has a series on how to build a nice solid workbench. He has a blog as well detailing the how-to and different options as far as vices and holdfasts as well. It's not your typical thrown together bench but is a common man approach and price with durability and longevity also.

Do you run them with the 1 3/4 on the top, or the wide side?

I don't mind the tools on the table, band saw or table saw, but moving them from the tables to the shave horses, back to the tables gets old.

Hedgeapple has a very nice workbench in his shop.  It has an extended part in the middle that his vise is mounted on.  If I ever get to build a bigger shop I'm going to incorporate this into a workbench.

I agree, it looks like it would be awesome. But I'll make mine removeable.
