Title: long draw length crazy ratio
Post by: loon on August 24, 2016, 10:17:41 pm
Not my bow

1½" wide, 2" set, 66" long 48lb at 41" hazel. Not sure how many shots he got through it... ...

My long term dream/goal is to do a 58" bow with 33" draw, sinew backed with some sort of supple wood and some reflex... (maybe mixed miwok and lakota style, perhaps 5 curve static recurve) it's still significantly less crazy than this. draw length / bow length ratio of .57 rather than .62. I want such draw length to potentially use it for Korean traditional archery. So it'd have to make 160 yards as straight as possible.. would 45#@33" be enough? Maybe 8gpp

Definitely possible with bamboo and with wood like persimmon.

I've never heard anybody talking about this before.....but I have a hazel short bow that can be drawn until the string comes off the nocks yet never shows any string follow (or very little). I think it's about 50 inch or so long and has been drawn to 34.

Mikke has a habit of making bows that refuse to break.

Man, could make a Korean hazel self bow!!

Thanks WillS... I can't even. Guess Hazel is magic wood? Or Mikke is a magic bowyer..

He's definitely magic.  When you can make willow bows at 90lb you're automatically a wizard.

Hey, that first video is from my home yard! I had arranged a primitive archery competition.

Mikke is here in Finland very well known bowyer and archer.

Here is the same bird cherry bow in slow motion, the bow is flying like a bird:

By looking at it, Id guess the last 35# of draw weight comes from the last 3" of draw. Nasty little bugger. If he had the fades moving at all he wouldn't even have as much set mid limb as he does now.

Definitely not.  Mikke has done this with countless selfbows.

Mike, can you make a 49 inch bow go to 28 inches of draw at around  55 pounds?

Loon, have you seen my short bows I have been working on, 45 and 49 inches long going to 26 and 28 inches of draw?
