Well after rushing and destroying 5 or 6 staves Ive finally realized how to properly use a draw knife :-[
Hackberry 64in TTT 2in fades to 1/2 in non bending 5in tips. It's obviously VERY rough but any advice would be great thanks!

Here's a pretty decent sized knot but hopefully I'll be fine

And just cause I love the way hackberry looks

Looks like you have along ways to go :)
Keep it up and you will get a good bow.
-
Haha oh yeah it's still a good 2 in thick
-
Think it's possible to induce reflex even though that knot is on the side?
-
Sure. Hackberry bends like rubber with dry heat. Just take it easy and watch how that knot acts as you clamp it down. Is that just above/below the centerline?
-
I wouldn't put a heat gun to it till it drys. What, it's only a few weeks without roots attached, right?
-
Good call. I didn't that. Wet wood and heat guns equal lots and lots of checks.
-
I planned on letting it dry. This is actually a newly cut sapling lol. I cut ANOTHER tree down. This one is about 12 ft tall 6-8 in in diameter.
-
Awww, Gawd, another Clear Cut in Fl. :o ;)
-
Hey man do what you gotta do
Definitely cheaper than buying some!
-
You could probably trade some of those staves in the future for some cured ones.
-
If it's still green, cut out a form out of a 2X6 and clamp it down for a month. Your reflex will be "dried" into the stave . After it's dry, take it to floor tiller, then heat treat the belly.Give it a few days to equalize with the RH,then finish your tiller. JMHO God Bless

Wow that's an awesome idea I'll definitely be trying this out

True. I still need to come grab that elm from you. I might try trading a few for some horn and rawhide
