Post by: sailordad on March 01, 2008, 12:35:29 am
i was wondering which is the better way to scrape limbs

should one scrape from handle to tips or from tips to handle?

or does it not matter?

thanks for the feedback.

I'm thingking handle to tips - seems like the grain tapers better that way.

I usually go from handle to tips but sometimes ya hit a spot that the scraper chatters on then I go the other way

Same here. You're feathering the taper out on the belly, so if you go tip to handle, you're working against the grain of the wood. Like Dana said, sometimes you hit a weird spot that scrapes better in another direction, though.

What Dana and Hillbilly said.I kind of lighten up as I get toward the last 6 or 8 inches to just
feather it out and catch it up while tillering.I have seen folks almost cut the tips off where they scrap without doing that. They just keep getting deeper and deeper as the go down the limb. And
that ant good. The limb is narrower toward the end so it is easy to get to much , be careful there. :)

It doesn't matter, until you start working the fades, from handle riser to limbs. In this area, it's really important to work from the belly into the fades. In other words, working from the tip, into the fades. Otherwise, if you work from the riser down into the fades, you will create a low spot, and possibly a hinge.
