Title: Hickory Bill Knife
Post by: osage outlaw on July 21, 2016, 08:07:22 am
Hickory Bill sent me these pictures and asked that I post them for him.  He's having internet issues at the moment.

It's a file knife with osage burl scales.

OO, I stopped and spent the day with Bill a couple of weeks ago and got to see the Osage burl knife in person and man it is definitely a keeper, I have got 3 of Bills knives and they just keep on getting better and better. His sheaths are also excellent, If you have one of his bows and a knives you are well equipted for anything that comes along. Bob

Very nice complete sets/Sheaths and knives.Beautiful work.Last a lifetime if you don't lose em....lol.That's happened to me and really pissed me off.I think it's because a person gets so much stuff around him that sooner or later a person just plain misplaces stuff.

Good looking knife.

Anyone know what files are good ones for knife making? I picked up a bag of them at a yard sale. They are  Grodet, Lenox, Heller, Simonds and Nicholson.  Not quite sure what I am going to do with them yet.

JEB..I try to stick with Nickleson files for knives as they are made from 1095 high carbon steel...a long time favored steel for knives..some say any  older file made in the usa is farelly safe for knives...

Nicholson would be my preferred brand.  I've used a couple of other brands and they turned out good.  I look for old USA made files.

Hickorybill, did you have to stabilize the osage before you used it for the handle?

Yes I stabilized it with minwax wood hardener..and my finish is about 20 coats of super glue and wet sanded with 2000 grit and hand buffed with mothers metal polish...you can see your reflection in the handle scales
