I am replaceing a part of my center console in my truck. My interior is Grey and Black. Black wood is expensive. I don't know of any woods that are grey in appearance. Any help would be great. I am thinking I may have to end up making micarta out of some grey or black fabric.

Vinegar and rust will turn some woods grey.
-
Black dye on white wood can come out gray but test it first.

I just wonder how the dye will hold up to sunlight. The stupid pad is glued on, and then the plastic that it is glued to is glued on too.

Like dc said, a solution of white vinegar and rust. It will darken with time and sunlight. Get a pint jar full of vinegar, add one pad of steel wool, cap loosely and wait a week. For darker color pre treat the wood with strong tea. Wipe on the vinegar solution and put it in the sun for a few hours. Repeat for darker color.

Any idea what woods? I have a few laying around.

Does white oak turn green like red oak?
-
Cedar shakes near the sea always turn gray.
Maybe you could spray a shake or board with salt water and see.

I'll do some tests. I currently have at my disposal: Apple, Utah Juniper, Russian Olive, Black Locust, Scots Pine, Purple Heart, Mahogany, Service Berry, Silver Maple. I'll give some a shot.

I had a request to make a grey pen. Tried some wood dye on maple and it didn't turn out very well. I think the vinegar rust thing would work better for what you are looking at. Keep us posted, that is gonna look cool.

I know you said grey, but if black will do -- why not use leather alcohol USMC black dye - - Feibings brand. Will make any wood black black black. Easy to apply too.

I was doing some yard work this weekend and saw I have a weathered pallet in my back yard. Now, What type of glue or epoxy will withstand the heat of being inside a truck?
-
I had a bunch of bamboo slats stacked up in a corner of my outside shop, I also had a gallon of clorox on a shelf next to the slats. I never thought about the clorox bottle deteriorating over time but it did and dumped the clorox on the floor next to the slats. All the slats turned grey after being fumed with the clorox vapors, the same color as weathered barn wood.

When I was working construction with a Friend of mine, he built a big two story house that had cedar siding, and he used a bleaching oil, and it turned grey, like the seaside homes. I think they turn grey, because of the sun, bleaching them. Check with your local hard ware store, or big box store, and see if they have a bleaching oil, for cedar.
