Title: Rock ram
Post by: Zuma on May 26, 2016, 11:48:22 am
I wanted to do a full sized ram
in wood but found sitting on the
deck with a few files beats lugging
logs and a chainsaw.

Thanks fellas :)
I recommend giving soapstone a try.
It is really a neat material to work and handle.
It carves, chisels, drills and sands quite easily.
Beware of the dust.

Didn't know you carved looks SWEETTTTTTTTTTTT.

Did you use a drimal. Do you what kinda of stone it is.

I've gotten pretty good exspeca'lly with faces on antler tips. But I'll carve on anything moose horn, ivory, anything.

I've got a project to carve two heads from sandsone.

  You did a NICE job.

I just love looking at whatever you post Zuma. I got to be pretty good friends with Frank (moose) the rock vender at Marshall. Hard to believe this old farm boy bought a 48 lb block of mahogany obsidian, a 37 lb piece of flint river, and he gave me half a 5 gal. Bucket of soap stone mixed with 4 nice sized pieces of something real hard he said I'd need diamond tools to work but would really hold detail. I never really carved before but what the heck I need another hobby. I'll probably be asking you some questions in the future.
PS probably don't keep them wives long given compliments like that lol.

BJ you are to kind. :)
I wish I could find out more about MOJAM.
Not much on the web.
It seems like you are now stocked up to do
some serious knapping. Feel free to hit me up
on any soapstone questions. I'm just learning
myself but would be glad to share what I've learned.
BTW have you had inter action with member Jeb?
He is a great guy from MI and has a terrific group
he comes to Flint Ridge with.

Nice carving Don. I have some carving rock in the rock pile somewhere that came from the U.P. of Michigan. Kind of a maroon color with some white in it. If I get my hands on it I will send you a chunk.
