Title: 51" bendy corn snake
Post by: osage outlaw on May 22, 2016, 10:10:17 pm
I started this bow at Moontree and finished it up at the Classic.  It was a tiny sliver of osage that was in the corner of my shop for a few years.  I almost threw it in the burn pile a few times because it was so small but I would see the bow hiding inside of it and put it back in the corner.  It's 51" nock to nock and somewhere in the low 40's at my full draw.  The skin was a gift from Greg Sulfridge at Moontree this spring.  Greg is about the most generous person you will ever meet.  He wasn't sure what kind of snake it was.  I'm guessing some sort of a corn snake.  It's one of the coolest skins I have ever put on a bow.  The tip overlays are sheep horn.  It's been a while since I've made a short bendy bow like this.  I enjoy making and shooting them.

Amazing bow--for sure! Question: that is a really neat tip/ nock. I'm new still to bow making and have been sticking to pyramid flat bows from boards. That nock would be great, I think, for thinner tips. What did you make it out of? Any tips for how to make 'em? Looks like there could be a risk of the string coming off--how would I prevent that? Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys.

hurlbri1, I used big horn sheep horn for the tip overlays.  I've never had a string come off before.  They stay in the grooves.  I put an angle on the limb with a belt sander and then glue on the horn.  You have to make sure to get flat matching surfaces between the wood and the horn.  I use rasps and files to shape them.

You guys and your burning osage! Oh so many things I've made from osage people wanted to burn...

Thanks guys.

Badger, this little stick of osage seemed very stiff when I started bending it.
