I was messing around and ended up making a hand drill to try to drill some rocks. here is what I came up with.
the shaft is dog wood i think, the weight is Ocean Spray as it the drive board i used store / garage sale string :-[ instead of making some.

the drill was made from a piece of rock i got in a trade from Mr. Mullet. it hold its edge great on the rocks shown. i had a small flat rock it was some kind of speckled "soft" rock, or so i thought it ate my drill before i gave up on that rock. Its kinda amazing how fast and easy you can drill holes in stone. hope you enjoy. Ed

Pretty darn cool Ed.

Ed, Is your photo of the drill point before or after drilling?
Do you have one of before, if not?
Thanks Zuma

That's too cool. Got to try that. Is that rock you drilled into called chalk rock?
-
Thank you all for taking the time.
Zuma: this point was in the re-sharpened stage after doing the rocks shown and the one mentioned above that ate my drill. I drilled one rock last night and it was thicker than my drill was long i hit the shoulders. the pic below is the rock i drilled last night and the drill after.
Gutshot: I have no idea what that rock is. I just picked them up at the river. I'm starting to see what ones work better than others.
I have this so i can take it apart slide the weight off and then back onto another drill shaft. I used one wood shaft (no drill attached) to try to start a fire. I need to enlarge the complete unit for fire, there it too much friction to keep the small weight spinning. Ed

Very nice Mr Ed! Some of the drill bits were three sided.

Thank you Ben, I have seen pics of some of the 3 sided drills. However I have come to the conclusion i'm lucky to make a two sided one.LOL

Thanks Ed :)
I don't know if you know but I am a
stone drill freak. ???
I am pretty excited that you have decided
to jump into it. PM me if you want to try some
longer thinner drill bits.
I just hafted one up after I wore out my last one.
I like the bow drill most. Here are a few on site
links if your interested. You will have to paste
them in the search box.

Thank you for this, however I'm not sure what to chose, I'd trust your choice for the drill if you wouldn't mind picking for me. Thank you again. Ed
