i picked one piece up from a rock shop in Marfa, Tx.
the shop owner didn't know what it was. he even questioned if it was synthetic.
it looked knappable, so i brought it back with me.

in the sunlight, it looks sort of like gray plastic.
thanks in advance.

The second picture onward look like Novaculite to my eyes.
-
^^ Thanks.
It knaps like dacite, but those red veins just come apart when you look at them.
I tried to get some vein-free flakes, but it just wasn't happening. I'll most likely just leave it alone and focus my time elsewhere.
-
It looks like grey novaculite to me also.
-
Looks like a good time!
-
^^ thanks.
i can get small flakes/points from it, so i may save it for when i'm really rock poor.
-
I'm always rock poor, so I would already have it destroyed. ;D
-
Those cracks are from water and freezing some where through time.
-
That's TX Chert.
It's a variant of Edwards. It should take heat very well.

i just googled that and found a photo of one made from this material:
that looks exactly like the stuff 8)
thanks.

instead of making a new thread, can i post another rock for identification?
i knocked a slab off of it earlier; but thinking i should probably save this stuff until i have time to treat it.
edit: after searching around online, it appears to be a rhyolite. if so, i don't have to wait to heat treat it, hah hah.

i tried flaking a small chubby piece to see how it acted. it's very tough and the flakes almost fracture into powder as they run.
