Title: First set Patriot Missiles, FINISHED PICS ADDED! pg2
Post by: lebhuntfish on April 11, 2016, 09:12:08 pm
I've been wanting to make some  new traditional arrows for a while now. I picked up some beautiful Douglas fir shafts from the knocking point booth at OJAM a few weeks ago.
I've done a lot of reading and testing on how to go about making and finishing a traditional arrow.
The first thing I done was inspect and straighten the shafts then I cut them off to match my other arrows. I used the cut off pieces to test finishes and tapering tools. I also made a guinea pig dowel. That being said I have  never done any of this process before. Besides straightening and fletching.
I spray painted the fletching end white after dying the shaft with green rit dye, which turned out mostly brown for some reason. But I liked the color on the test.
I borrowed a friend's cresting jig and made up a design I like. I crested all the shafts and the test dowel. I used sharpie markers. I will buy some paint for the next go around.
I made me an arrow dipper from some pvc. And dipped the shafts after waiting 24 hours for the marker to cure. They turned out nicely after 2 coats of poly acrylic in my dipper. I'm going to sand them lightly then put 2 more coats on.
It was raining this morning so I decided to dye some feathers. Which I have never done before. They turned out awesome! They were easy to do with kool-aid!
Here are a few pictures of my progress at the moment. I call them my Patriot missiles!

Thanks,  I probably could do that. I'm making these for target arrows but I have 6 more to make hunting ones with.

What were your KoolAid flavors, Pat?
I know a certain 12-yr-old girl who'd love those feathers!   ;)

Well,  I got them at the dollar store for 5 for a buck. Red is cherry and blue is blue raspberry. I used all 5 packs with both colors. I took a stainless steel pot and filled it just out 3/4 full. Brought it to a boil then took it off the heat. When it stopped boiling I added about 3/4 cup of white vinegar and my 5 kool-aid packs. I rented the feathers in warm sink water and then threw them in the pot. I stired them with a fork until they looked good to me. Then I pulled them out and dried them between some paper towels to get most of the moisture off of them. Then layer them out on dry paper towels to air dry. I noticed when they were pretty much dry they would curve back to the left wing shape.
But cherry and blue raspberry was the flavors!  >:D

New anchor point. Draw until you can taste cherry, then release ;).

Get the lead out and finish those up, Pat. There's 3d shoot here Sunday!

I might have them done but not sure if I could get to the shoot. I got the feathers all ground down tonight. Also sanded and dipped the shafts two more times. Getting close though!

I did tweak them a bit but they were very straight already. I didn't bare shaft test them because they are a match to my other shafts. I may have to tweak them a bit though.  I cut them an inch longer and I'm using 145g glue on tips. I still have plenty of room to shorten them up though.

Well I got them all finished up. I learned a few things and will apply them when I make the rest of the dozen for hunting season. My feather burner messed up on me during a burning session. So a couple of them aren't burnt the best but they shoot great. Even in the wind today. They came in at 540 grains and with my hunting bow I'm shooting 152fps through the chronograph. I'll let the pics speak for themselves from here on out.

Thanks Pat,  it was a fun project and I learned a good amount. Now that I've made a set of arrows, I know why they cost so much to buy!

I bought my first set of custom arrows back in the mid 1980s. They were crowned dipped and crested cedars. I think I paid $35 for the dozen.

Pat,  the first set of wood arrows I bought was just stained brown, crested, and had a finish on them. I think I paid 50 or 55 dollars for half dozen.

Awesome!!! Sick lookin arrows and cool photos man. Best lookin first set I've ever seen!

Now you can understand why I switched to the plain Jane look. Knock out a dozen arrows in a couple hours vs a half dozen in several days.

Thanks fellas! I tend to go all out when I make something. Sometimes it takes me a while but I normally get what I'm looking for when I'm finished. I need to learn that simple is just as good as fancy!

Mike,  I hope to get in some more practice before mojam. Hopefully I won't miss as much as I did  at OJAM!

Thanks DBar!
I got a set of arrows in trade at the classic last year that had dark pink marabou glued on behind the fletch. I really like them. I done a trade last year with someone that wanted white Rabbit fur for the same reason. So that's what I used on mine. I'll probably do that a lot to my arrows!

The kool-aid was kinda neat,  I'll be doing that again!
Yeah Paul,  I definitely need to practice a bunch more. There is a couple of 3D ranges near by that only cost a couple of bucks. I plan on hitting those some when I can.

I got another half dozen of shafts that I would probably do that for! >:D
Makes me appreciate a half dozen from a vendor for 50 bucks. And the 95 that a friend of mine charges for ones similar to mine.
