Title: Heating erc?
Post by: TimothyR on March 31, 2016, 02:21:20 pm
How do heat reflex in erc?  And does it require heat treating?  My stave is floor tillered and ready. I just need to know how to proceed. Thanks for any help

Of nearly all woods ERC is most elastic in compression. For that reason I wouldn't temper it.

I have had very good results with steam bending erc, I just sealed with shellac and steamed the same as I do my Osage, but I don't think it was necessary to steam that long (30 min. per 1/2").  Bent like butter.  Never tried tempering

I've bent it just slightly with steam and dry heat.  I don't think dry heat/tempering improves it much, like other woods.  It seemed barely effected, and if anything more brittle.
