I am working on a knife from a file. What is the tip for keeping a point as your making the blade. The tip wants to keep being blunt .
-
You are cold working or forging?
-
I am just making it out of a file. Heated it up really hot. And now just shaping it on the belt sander
-
I always dull the point on purpose to keep from stabbing myself until done. Youcould draw file across the spine to bring the flat spine into the point if that is easier for you.
-
Yea I think I get what your saying. Bring the top thicker edge down to meet the thinner blade part.
-
Make a drop point blade. They are my favorite.
-
You got it. Works great with drop points.
Now i got to say, i refuse to help anymore without pics! :P
-
Osage outlaw we had the same ideas....
-
I just made one last weak from a file. My first ever knife. And this is my second . Maybe I could talk patrick into posting pics for me.
-
Haha im sorry i didnt know you didnt have pic posting capabilities. I use pat so much for pics he probably has a file with my name on it by now.
I like making file knives. I made a few just by hand with no tools other than another file. Draw file across the spine will get you a point. What type are you making?
-
If you got it real hot to anneal it and make it easier to shape you are going to have to heat treat anyway, you need to leave the edge as thick as a dime for heat treat. Then when you do the finish file work and sanding is when you need to be careful
-
Yea he has posted alot for me also.
And said he will post them for me again. Thanks Patrick.
Yeah I did keep the edge a little thick when I heat treated the last one.

Here are a few pictures that Bob asked me to post for him.

Your a good man pat, but i wont tell anyone. Dont wanna ruin your reputation ;)
Bob that aint bad, and for a skinner a round tip is best really. But if you want a sharp tip to stab holes, draw file the spine into the point and you are good to go.
-
Thanks again Patrick.
Thanks sleek. I am happy with the way my first one turned out.
-
Your welcome buddy, I'm going to have to open another photo bucket account just for other people's pictures!
Patrick
-
That looks like a great knife mate. You should be proud of that! :)
-
Thanks sleddy. I am proud of it for my first go at knife making.
