So I found this at work the other day:

I figured I could use the antlers for tip overlays, and wondered if there is an approved method of removing them before I get the hacksaw out?
-
What kind of animal did that come from? That looks very abnormal to me.
-
If you want to cut just the antler off a hacksaw or sawzall with med tooth blade will work fine. If that came from a whitetail though You may want to show your states game commission first because it has some genetic abnormality I've never seen. It looks like antler growing like a pronghorn and the bone part of the antler growth is way longer than normal.
-
Nevermind you're in the UK. That's normal over there.
Looks just like the ones my uncle harvested in Germany.
-
Muntjac deer - small tree and plant eating machine that gets hit by cars a lot round here.
-
Those certainly would look nice just hollowed and slid on the end of the limb. I wonder if it was the shape of the antler that had influenced the design.
Those are the ones with the tusks too right? Those tusks would also make good overlays if they are anything like the tusks of other herbivores.
There's no hunting allowed in the UK correct? That's kind of a shame if there's that much road kill occurring. It would lead you to believe the population could withstand a little thinning out.
-
Nice find. That's a cool looking skull. If I found that I would keep it the way it is and find something else for tip overlays. I guess it would be different if its common for you to find them. A hacksaw right under the base will work fine for removing them.

I agree!

Like kid said....hollow those babies out and make them nocks themselves.

The population needs a lot of thinning out - there's a bit of a campaign going on to encourage people to eat venison as it will make a market for the meat.
Thank you for all the advice - I'm in two minds whether to dismantle this as it's the first I've found in 35 years but on the other hand it is free material...
-
That would be saved if it were mine. That is worth more than a few bow tips If you haven't found another in 35 years.
-
Make sure and save the bases for antler buttons, takedown bolts, etc.
