You guys might remember my fancy Hi Lo camper build from last year. Well, I traded it for this ugly boat trailer a couple of months ago. I could see the potential in it even though most other people couldn't. My goal is to have a rustic looking tear drop shaped camper tall enough to stand up in without hitting our head. I want this thing to look like an old shed rolling down the road. It will have a wood storage area under the bed frame. This is a rough sketch of what I want to build.

My new burgundy beauty!

The tires had some dry rot cracks which made me a little nervous. I found a good deal on some almost new tires plus a spare. Next up was to convert the V frame to a flat bed. I got some 1/4" x 2" angle iron and started welding. I made the flat bed 13' long.

I ground off any rust that I could see.

A coat of primer and 2 coats of flat black covered up that horrible burgundy color.

Once I got the deck down it looked totally different than when I started. The axles are farther back than a normal trailer but I think that will actually work out better when I'm fully loaded.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/Screenshot_2016-02-04-21-06-13_zpszjt84ckr.png) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/Screenshot_2016-02-04-21-06-13_zpszjt84ckr.png.html)
Today I started on the camper. I did a lot of measuring and thinking trying to come up with a good side profile. This is what I came up with. The more I look at it the less I like the slope down to the back. I want to take the angle farther up towards the front. I'll draw some lines on it and see if I can make it any better. I don't want to lose any head room in the open part of the camper.

Cool, another camper build along. I enjoyed your hi lo build along.
Mike
-
ill she take her maiden voyage to the Tenn Classic?
-
Looking forward to this Clint! It sure looks good so far!
Patrick

Can't wait to see the mkII That trailer looks good and solid and it will be interesting to see how you put in everything you learned from mk1.
Del
-
Way cool project ! Bob
-
Keep us posted with pics as you progress Clint, I love watching these types of projects as they come together.
-
Too cool
-
Good luck, Clint! Though, based on your past projects, good planning will be utilized fully and little reliance on luck necessary. 8)
-
Awesome Clint!
-
Thanks guys. I've spent the last 2 months planning this thing out in my head. I've got an idea of what I want it to look like. Now I just need to make it happen. The weather will affect how much time I get to work on it.
-
That's a great start Clintster!
-
Looking forward to this one too, Clintster. I enjoy your projects....
-
That is cool Clint, I have an old boat trailer. Maybe it's time for a makeover. I look forward to your take on this project.
-
Don't forget to load it up with osage. I'll help you unload it at Pappy's, again.
-
I'm looking forward to the progress pictures.
-
I sometimes wonder what wild projects you would crank out if you were not chained to a job so much of your time! What would spring forth from your mind, if you were not constrained by time and money?
Some of us oughta have jobs and someone standing over us making us be productive, but people like you really just need to be turned loose!
-
Will do Mullet.
JW, my boring job gives me time to let my mind wonder and come up with stuff to make. It seems like as soon as I finish a project I think of something else to start on. My project list has a few more items on it. I'd like to make a small log skidder to pull behind a quad, an outdoor wood grill, and someday a bigger work shop.
-
I didn't get much done on the camper today. I only had a few hours to work on it and trying to move around a 13' long wall section by myself was a bit of a struggle. I got the straight sections framed out around the perimeter. I traced out the curved sections on the leftover plywood. I was planning on laminating several sheets together to use for the curved frame. The thickness wasn't right at all so I decided to use 2x lumber instead. I have them all cut out. This weekend I'll try to get the walls completely framed up.
I did some modifications to the slope on the back of the camper. I would like to go farther with it but I would be losing headroom in the open section where I'll be standing.

-
Looking good so far, maybe you and Bill can bunk in it at Marshall. >:D
-
I don't know Ryan. I'll have to talk to the Dancing Bear about that one.
Today I finished framing in one side. I still need to put some cross braces between the studs. I put some temporary bracing on it to keep it from flexing. I still need to frame in the window. I'm waiting to cut the door out until after I get it mounted on the trailer. Tomorrow I'll see if I can get the other side framed up.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160227_170749_zpskfecs6jg.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160227_170749_zpskfecs6jg.jpg.html)
I brought home a load of old barn siding. It's red oak with a nice aged and weathered look. I pulled out all the nails and cut the bad ends off of the boards. They are to thick and to use the way they are so I'm going to cut them into 6" wide boards. Then I'm going to try and resaw them on the band saw to a little under 1/2" thick. That should make them light enough to use as siding.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160227_181929_zpsuo5ni89s.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160227_181929_zpsuo5ni89s.jpg.html)
-
Very nice Clint! Can't wait to see it come together.
Tracy
-
Another cool project! I wish I had some of your motivation Clint. Hope I get to see this one at the Classic. It looks like it is coming along good.
-
Thanks Tracy.
Howard, I'm planning on hauling it to the Classic.
Today I got the other wall framed up. I cut out the windows and framed around both of them. I think I'm ready to mount the sides onto the trailer. I'm not sure if I'll do that tomorrow or not. Depends on rain and if I can get some help. I'll have to pull it outside to put the walls on. It will be to tall for the building I have it in now. I should be able to store it under a roof but it will be close. I wanted to make it a few inches taller but then I wouldn't have anywhere to store it.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160228_185533_zps54euyawk.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160228_185533_zps54euyawk.jpg.html)

Man that is coming along Clint, look forward to seeing it roll down the hill. ;)
Pappy
-
Looking good so far, maybe you and Bill can bunk in it at Marshall. >:D
For that to happen....I'll have to check out the ventilation system and Clint will have to invest into some ear plugs.. :) ;)
DBar
-
I just hope I can stop it when I get to the bottom of that hill Pappy.
I didn't have any help for most of the day so I wasn't able to mount the walls on the trailer. I used a straight edge and a circular saw to rip the Oak barn siding boards. I kept the width under 6". Most of them are closer to 4". I'm a little worried about trying to resaw 6" of red Oak. I'm sure my band saw is capable. I'm just not so sure on the user. I haven't done any sawing like this before. I have 2 new blades. I hope that is enough to get through them. Any tips or advice is welcome.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160229_184632_zpsfeuarczw.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160229_184632_zpsfeuarczw.jpg.html)
-
Bill, it's going to have 2 windows so I'll get some good cross ventilation going. I can also get an air freshener for it. And I have plenty of ear plugs.
-
resawing on bandsaw . . . YouTube is your friend.
-
Resawing ain't to bad, you need a good straight fence and a 3tpi blade at least 1/2in. I also use some wax on the blade and the saw top. A second set of hands is nice but if not find something the same height as the saw top so your boards can rest on it behind the saw. Let the saw run for a few seconds between boards. This will help cool the blade. Also if it's cooler out side that's nice to. If not I point a fan at the cutting table too help keep it cool and to blow dust away. Hope this helps ya bud.
Patrick
-
Bill, it's going to have 2 windows so I'll get some good cross ventilation going. I can also get an air freshener for it. And I have plenty of ear plugs.
I'll pull it up there Clint .......I was just pulling your chain... :)
-
Thanks Bill. I'll cover all fuel expenses for the trip.
-
I put together a rip fence and a spring board to put pressure on the boards as I saw them.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160303_163434_zpskkaw5f06.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160303_163434_zpskkaw5f06.jpg.html)
I made a quick roller support.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160303_172237_zpsos5tggtu.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160303_172237_zpsos5tggtu.jpg.html)
Then I spent the next 4.5 hours sawing the boards. It was going good until I hit a couple of nails that I didn't find earlier. Both new blades are now dull. Everything in my garage is covered with saw dust. It made quite a mess.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160303_212703_zpsxgxrxctc.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160303_212703_zpsxgxrxctc.jpg.html)
I got all of them cut down to just under 1/2" thick. They should work great for siding the outside walls of the camper. I'm tired of messing with these boards. I've put 10-12 hours of work into getting them ready to use. I think I have more than enough for what I need.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160303_212729_zpsox2iyc3p.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160303_212729_zpsox2iyc3p.jpg.html)
-
Lots of work, but in the end it's gonna look awesome!
-
Good looking resaw setup. But, man, that is a mess!!
-
Clint, just open the garage door and get out the backpack blower to get rid on the saw dust. ;D
-
I had that idea last night Pat but I don't have a blower. I'm going to start watching Craigslist for a cheap one.
-
...or just build one, Clint. I'm sure you can find what you need to build a blower. ;D
-
Hmmm. I do have a tiny squirrel cage blower from an old inflatable snowman.
-
Now that's a bunch of man glitter!
Looks great Clint! I like your set up there. I may have to try that myself. I'm going to be resawing some cedar before long. That will come in handy.
Patrick
-
Looking good! Being a medieval/renaissance reenactor and the son of a civil war reenactor I've seen things similar before and they always look so awesome. At a civil war reenactment I've seen one that was dressed up to look like a small plantation house with columns and everything, put a little trellis work around the bottom and you'd think it was built there on the spot. In my medieval reenacting I've seen a trailer set up just like a Tudor era farmhouse, even had a thatched roof.
-
Patrick, Good luck with the cedar.
Urufu, I've seen a lot of unique campers while researching for this project. There are some really interesting ones out there.
PatB, I remembered my shop vac doubles as a leaf blower. The garage is all cleaned out now. I had the garage doors open while I was sawing last night. When I went outside this morning I looked at them and they were brown with saw dust. I had to clean those off as well.
-
Looking good.
I like to save fine saw dust like that to use as oil dry.
-
Looking good Clint
whish you lived a bit closer we could run the boards thru the resaw at work in short order
it would be fun to be a helper on these projects
-
I wish you were closer to Guy. You've already helped me out more than you will ever know thanks to our conversation at the Classic last year.
Turtle, I'm going to save some of it to show my kids what happens when you get the right mixture of sawdust, air, and fire.
-
You should record that and show it to us all.
-
My Dad and brother in law helped me for a while today. We pulled the trailer out and attached the walls. We put some temporary braces on them until I can finish framing it up next week. We moved it to a different building because it was to tall for where I have been storing it. I have it under a roof now. The ground is sloped so we jacked up the lower side and front. I wanted to get it all level before I did any more work to it. I managed to smash my thumb pretty bad while we were trying to get supports under the frame.

-
Smashed a thumb??!! OUCH!
Looks good size now that it's sitting on trailer.
Which side is going to have the slideout unit? >:D
-
Dang Clint you look skinny
-
I'm slowly getting there Bubby. That is what Guy helped me with.
Knoll, No slide out units on this one.
-
Looking good Clint! Wish I had one!
Patrick
-
OUCH - It's all fun and games until someone smacks their thumb ! Lookin' good Clint - Bob.
-
Love watching your builds, OO!
-
Bill, it's going to have 2 windows so I'll get some good cross ventilation going. I can also get an air freshener for it. And I have plenty of ear plugs.
I'll pull it up there Clint .......I was just pulling your chain... :)
You might want to bring a gas mask. >:D
That thing is looking good so far. It's bigger than I thought it was going to be. Hopefully I see it at Marshall.
-
Looking like a camper now Clint !
Don't forget an access door on the side for the wood storage .
man this is going to be like a Holiday Inn on wheels
-
I am surprised you were able to resaw accurately with a band saw that size even with the sweet springboard get-up; cool project enjoying seeing it come together thanks for sharing. You keeping a chart of costs and hours for a total at the end? I bet Ramada III and IV would get even more efficient
-
Guy, I'm putting two doors on the back to access the storage area.
Lumber man, I have all the receipts from Lowe's but I haven't been keeping track of the amount or the time I've spent on it. My band saw did pretty well. It's a 1hp.
-
It's bigger than I thought it was going to be.
+1
-
Clint what size are you thinking for the bed , I have a couple of extra mattresses left from a prodgect .
you would be welcome them to them
if you want them I will dig them out and measure them
that would be one more thing out of my shop
they are from a furniture place that did hideabed couches
they are foam about 4 inches thick
-
I'm not sure on the size yet Guy. I was planning on using my queen size air mattress but I'm open for better ideas. I would guess the bed platform would be 70" x 72" roughly.
-
After the road test to Twin Oaks, you should point it northwest and bring it out to the Black Hills to hunt turkeys!
-
The Clintabago is coming along nicely, Clint.
-
Sounds good Clint
that seems like about what the one is so you may just end up with it , maybe at the Classic, we shall see !
-
Thanks Guy! I had plans of getting a lot done on the camper the last 3 days but I decided to play with my chainsaws first. I got a little carried away and didn't get much time to spend on the camper. I did work on framing up the walls this afternoon. I'm going to focus on it this weekend and try to get caught up.
-
Clint
I've got an old 16" craftsman chainsaw that's not running, it's yours if you want it.....I'll bring it to Moontree
DBar
-
Thanks. I'll bring some tools to work on it. Might be able to bring it back to life.
-
Today I finished putting the cross boards in the walls so I will have something to screw the barn siding to. I attached the walls to the porch roof I have it parked under. That will allow me to take the temporary supports out and still keep the walls straight. I got started on the roof ribs. I'm probably 1/3 of the way done with them. Tomorrow the goal is to finish the ribs and then get started on the barn siding. Progress is slow since I am doing it all by myself. Its starting to take shape.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160312_174821_zpsnltxr8ju.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160312_174821_zpsnltxr8ju.jpg.html)
-
Wow...look'n real good!!!
-
Looking good Clint
-
Thats actually starting to look like a camper Clint. Can't wait to see it with the siding.
Patrick
-
Shaping up nicely Clint, I've always thought building a camper would be a fun project. What are your plans for a roof material?
-
Looking good Clint. Lotta work so far. Should all pay off when your done. Good thing you drive a Dodge.
-
Great idea attaching the walls to your building roof for support. Looking real good Clint
-
Great idea attaching the walls to your building roof for support....
As long as he remembers to unscrew it before towing it out >:D ;).
Looking good, can really see the shape now :).
Del
-
Thanks guys.
Greg, I'm planning on using corrugated metal barn roofing. That's what I spaced the ribs out for.
I spent another solid day working on it. I got a lot done but not as much as I had hoped for. Since I'm by myself I have to clamp a lot of boards in place before I can screw them together. Another set of hands would make it go a lot faster.
I finished installing the rest of the roofing ribs.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160313_132708_zpsn56nmgqu.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160313_132708_zpsn56nmgqu.jpg.html)
I framed up the storage area/bed frame.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160313_164146_zpspx4aafjm.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160313_164146_zpspx4aafjm.jpg.html)
I cut out the door opening.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160313_164157_zpsitilwvbo.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160313_164157_zpsitilwvbo.jpg.html)
I covered the walls with roofing felt. That should help keep the water out. I used a chalk like to mark where the cross boards are located. I moved all the barn siding to the building where I'm working on the camper. I should be all set up and ready to start putting them on in the morning.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160313_180606_zpspfdk5rhj.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160313_180606_zpspfdk5rhj.jpg.html)
-
Coming along nicely Clint! Are you going to have more storage in the front portion?
-
lint, you might think about adding a trim strip along the front side at least before adding the siding. It will help prevent air getting under the siding while traveling. Flashing would help keep water out.
She is coming along nicely. Loving this build along. 8)
-
Cody, I might have some shelves or something in the front. I haven't decided yet. After I live in it for a week at the Classic I'm sure I'll think of some ways to improve it.
Pat, are you talking about the bottom or the sides in the front? I bought some end plugs for the siding. It fills all the ridges to make it water tight. I was going to have the bottom edge overhang just a little bit in the front.
-
Wish was closer to give ya a hand. Looking good!
-
Me to Knoll!
Does anybody know anything about surge brakes? I'm thinking it would be a good idea to get them working correctly. When I got the trailer the brake line was unhooked from the reservoir in the tongue. I'm guessing they were locking up so they disabled them. I've been doing some research and I'm pretty sure they are the Atwood brand. I can't find any model number on the tongue. I don't what replacement parts to order. I'll try to get some pictures of them tomorrow.
-
Don't know much about surge brakes Clint. But I would reconnect everything and bleed and fill the reservoir. We have a boat trailer years ago that kept getting water in the break fluid. It would make them lock up. So we drained the reservoir and unhooked the lines. Not sure if that's the problem with yours but being a boat trailer it could be. It might work just fine if it was hooked back up.
Patrick

The wood siding is going slow but looking good.

-
Oh yea, that's awesome!
-
Looking Good.
You know we are all going to want the 25 cent tour at the Classic.
David
-
The tour will only cost a nickel. The inside won't be finished by then.
-
Wow shorty, that's looking mighty fine!!
-
David, glad to here you'll be at the Classic this year. 8)
-
Well i think ill have to steal your blueprints. I like this thing a lot
-
Steal away Jayman.
I finished the one side. I ran low on screws so the last few boards just have one each holding it in place. There was no way I was stopping for the night with a couple boards short of finishing that side. I'm not sure if I'm going to have enough boards to finish the other side. It's going to be very close. I can get more but I don't want to do all the cutting and resawing again. I am very happy with how it looks so far.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160314_185751_zpsz0jvb3lv.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160314_185751_zpsz0jvb3lv.jpg.html)
I took a few pictures of the surge brake. I think everything in the tongue needs replaced.

-
Clint, is there a manufacturer's tag on the brake? You could Google it and get the info needed.
She's looking good. I was talking about the 2 front corners of the body. Will there be a trim along those edges of the siding to prevent wind from getting under the siding while traveling...rain too?
-
I'm not sure what I'm doing there yet Pat. I'm going to experiment with leaving an inch or two of overhang from the roofing and bending that over the corner. I don't see any tags on the brakes.
-
Yep it looks like it needs replaced to me. Did you have the manufacturer, make and model of the trailer? That should be all you need to find your parts. Call a local boat/trailer repair shop. They will be able to point you the right way.
The camper sure is looking good buddy! I'm a little concerned about the amount of weight that's on the tung though. You might have to get a load leveler. They are used on the tung to help distribute the weight so it's more on the trailer axel instead of your rear suspension. You should be able to find one at an rv shop. And I think Harbor freight has them, not sure.

Some Rusty old Barn Tin would sure look good on it....
Pat B: I do plan to be there. Maybe with the Wife.
She wont shoot or work on Bows. She will talk and talk and talk.
If she would ever just show up she would fall in love with the Classic.
Did I mention that She loves to talk. ;D

I looked at some rusty old barn tin but it had holes in it and looked like more trouble than it was worth.

I would take you up on that offer. I need the little overhang pieces for above the door and windows.
-
I got the siding put on the other side today. It's ready for a roof now. Might try to get started on that tomorrow. I'm loving the looks of the barn siding. I had just enough full length boards to finish both sides. I had 7 left over but they all had issues. I'm using shorter pieces for the doors.

I put a couple 1x12's on the front of the storage area. I don't want the load sliding forward if I have to stop suddenly. I need to get a 1x8 and some plywood to get the box enclosed. When I finish the interior I'll cover up the 1x boards with whatever I put on the walls.

I want my half painted barn red with white trim.

You can paint your fancy new camper red with white trim

How about making the door out of barnwood on a 45 deg angle and make shutters on the windows would be cool...... :)

I'm planning on the shudders and want to make the door look like an old barn door somehow. I was thinking something like this.

You might consider putting a couple access doors in those 1x12's. It would be handy if you aren't hauling Osage and use that area for storage.

Cool looking doors Clint...just don't put a cresent moon on it...:) ;)

I'm going to hing the the top of the bed frame to allow access into the storage area. I want the front to be secure to keep anything from sliding forward.

I'm loving this build Clint, you're doing a great job, you can tell you have put a lot of thought and time into this.
-
Looking good Clint. Liking everything about this build, especially the barn look.
-
Thanks Aaaaaron. I get a little obsessed with projects like this. It's all I think about. I was sketching out plans for it all winter. My job is kind of boring so I have plenty of time to do research online. When I built that small box camper last year this is actually what I wanted to build. I just didn't have the time or the trailer for it.
Thanks PNewton
-
Just imagine how the next one is gonna turn out!
-
I'm not sure if there will be a next one. I'm building this one to fit my needs and look exactly like I want it to. But you never know. My needs might change in a few years.
-
I started putting the metal on this afternoon. Trying to put corrugated metal on a curved surface that's slightly less than square has been a challenge. I am going to put more screws in it after its all down. I need to trim up the edges a little also.

The first picture of the trailer tongue, looks like a bat, with the bolt being the eye, and the brace being the wings....... Just my imaginative carving eye. That system looks like toast. That love mobile is looking good!

-
Just a suggestion, I would put a big dab of silicone in the screw holes, then screw it down. Same in the front, rear, and top trim. What kind of finish are you going to use on the boards? Have you thought about the West System? It is expensive, but very hard, and durable, as it is used in the boating industry. Also it will seal the spaces, in between the boards. You could put a sheet of FG cloth on it, and brush on the West System, and it will be clear, and you can still see the wood, and the grain, etc. That thing is looking prettier and prettier, each photo session. Next project, redneck, Motor Coach! ;) ;) :D
Wayne

That is looking good Clint, can't wait to see it all finished up. :)
Pappy

Man Clint you have put the work into the Ramada. Your gonna turn heads when your pulling it to the classic
-
When you finish it, you need to put a "Mail Pouch", or Bull of the Woods, chewing tobacco ad on it. ;) Looking good! 8)
Wayne
-
So many reasons why I am hurting inside for not being able to attend this year's Classic and not seeing to check out the new Ramada is one of them. I give you much respect for your ambitious efforts. Joe
-
Thank you Joe. You will be missed at the Classic this year. I enjoyed the time I got to spend visiting with you last year.
Stickbender, I think I'm going to put a coat of polyurethane on the siding when I'm all done. It only has to be water resistant for a couple of weeks out of the year. The rest of the time it will be stored under a roof or indoors. I've thought about finding an old sign or something to hang on the outside.
Thanks Pappy and Gutshot
I didn't get much done on it today. I had to skin out a bunch of beaver tails and a few snakes this morning and that took longer than I expected. I painted the underneath side of the deck boards with some industrial epoxy paint. When I put the deck down it was cold outside and I wasn't thinking about the carpenter bees boring into the bottom of it. If I was smart I would have painted the boards before bolting them down. That would have been easier than crawling under it with a paint brush. I'm hoping the thick layer of paint keeps them from boring holes.
I spent a while staring at the door opening trying to figure out the best way to make the door. I think I have it figured out. I'm going to start on it tomorrow. I went to the barn that I got the siding from and gathered up some old rusty hinges. They should match the siding perfectly. My Dad donated a couple old padlocks to the project. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the one cleaned up or not. It has some corrosion on it.

Make some bee traps to put near where you store your camper and you will stop most of the bee boring.

-
We have some of those hanging in the area Eric. I'm just taking all the precautions I can. I don't want to fall through the floor of the camper because they tunneled all through it.
-
I put some trim boards inside the windows and the door today.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160323_195321_zpsw901uc9l.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160323_195321_zpsw901uc9l.jpg.html)
I framed up the door and put shims all the way around it so I could clamp it in place. I put all the siding boards on and put a board across the middle. I'm going to put another board across the top and bottom and then put a couple boards at a 45 degree angle between them. It should look like an old barn door. I left it clamped in place until I get the hinges on it. This weekend I'm going to pull it to my house so I can finish up the roof. I don't have enough head room to finish it where it is sitting right now.

I cannot believe those words came from Osage Outlaw! >:D
Ya'll understand Clint used to be MUCH taller back in the day. But he can't stand still for long and is always running off on another project. The little feller has worn his poor legs down to stumps! Shoot, I get tired just reading about all his projects.
-
I feel like it right now JW. I just made a mad dash to the old barn to get some supplies. I wanted a couple rusty hasps I spotted earlier. We are having high winds in front of a thunderstorm right now. I wanted to get what I needed before the storm hit. I'm glad I got everything when I did. A large Black Locust tree next to the barn had a big limb fall off and onto the lean to roof. It partially tore it down. That is where I got all the wood siding.
-
Oh jeez, now I feel bad for picking on you when you were risking your life and limb (and not the one on the tree!) like that. I am so glad you are ok, Clint. Please be safe, buddy. I'd hate to lose you.
But then, lightning only strikes tall objects! >:D
-
I made it back before the storm hit JW. No worries.
I wasn't able to find any smaller rusty hinges for the window shutters. I bought some new ones that were zinc coated. I want to age them and promote some rust. I soaked one in cleaning vinegar for 24 hours as a test. It looks better already. I threw the rest in to soak until I'm ready to use them.
The one on the right was soaked in the vinegar.

-
Good idea Clint!
YYou could also put them in some strong bleach water and let them drip dry. Do that a couple of times and they might just match your old rusty hinges. Might take a couple of days. When you get them aged as much as you want just rub in a good coat of remington oil. They should stay that way forever. Looking good bud!
Patrick

It's looking pretty cool! That'll look good at Twin oaks. Josh
-
Clint, I heard you talking about this trailer at Moon Tree and had to check it out. Looking good.
-
I'll bring it to Moontree next year Dave. I might have to get someone with 4WD to haul it around back to the flat area.
I woke up bright and early today. I wanted to spend all day working on the camper since the weather is so nice. I put the hinges on the door and then got my Dad to help me lower it down and haul it to my house. His utility truck handled the job easily. That makes me think my truck will have no problem pulling it. This is the first time I've been able to get back and see how it looks.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160326_104032_zpslftdm0wi.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160326_104032_zpslftdm0wi.jpg.html)
We parked it in my driveway and just as I was getting ready to start on the roof I got a phone call asking if I could help the neighbor lady remove a big dead ash tree from her yard. So my full day of working on the camper didn't get started until after 2:00 pm. I was able to get the rest of the roof screwed down. I still need to trim the edges and do a little finish work to it.

Thanks guys. I've been getting some stuff done on it this morning. I added another roof support in the front and screwed down an overlap that looked like it would catch the wind. I trimmed up the edges of the roof where it didn't line up even. I cut the plywood for the bed support. I'm going to wait to screw it down until I frame up the back doors. I'm starting on them now. I also finished the front door.

Clint , that is one impressive looking mobile shack!
-
Thanks Wildman.
I've been putting off making the back doors because I knew it would be a pain to figure out. When I framed up the walls I had no clue how I was going to make the back doors. I had to move some boards and chisel a couple more back out of the way to make room for the doors. I had to bend the hinges around the corner to make them work. There was a lot of redneck engineering involved in making everything fit. I still need to put the top, bottom, and angle boards on them. I'm still trying to figure out a way to lock them shut.

You could put some Luan Mahogany, door skins, in there to cover those boards, and make sliding stuff in and out easier. You could put a coat or two of poly urethane on both sides, to water proof, and make a smooth sliding area. Looking good!

-
Man Clint that RRII is looking awsome
-
Wayne, I'll probably put something down in the back just to cover the seams in the floor.
Thanks Gutshot.
We had some storms blow through last night and they dumped a lot of rain. I just checked the inside of the camper and its dry. The only moisture I can see is around the door frame. I haven't put any weather stripping around there yet.
-
Man that is looking good, can't wait to see it up close. :)
Pappy
-
Wow, that's cool! Would the kind of bolts you use for French doors work to lock the back doors down? If you had one on the top and bottom of each door, it should be pretty secure. There may be something similar that would work with a padlock...or maybe if the bolt was big enough, you could drill through it and put a lock through that way. Anyway, great work so far.
-
If you get a chance to run it over a scale I would be really interested to see what it weighs?
-
Thanks Pappy and Timbo.
DC, I'm not sure what it will weight. It's basically a shell. The inside will be open except for the bed platform. It can't be to heavy or it would have squatted the utility truck when we pulled it out.
I didn't get much done today. I was kind of wore out and just couldn't seem to get moving very well. I got the bed platform screwed down. I left one section loose so I can access the storage area from the inside. If I end up using it a lot I'll make the access hatch bigger. I still need to cut a board for the top of the front section.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160328_180549_zpsuduhnyjo.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160328_180549_zpsuduhnyjo.jpg.html)
I put the cross boards on the back door and added the rusted hasp. I still need a way to secure the doors to the inside frame to keep them shut tightly. I picked up a big old wrench from a junk store today. I have an idea on how to use it for the door latch.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160328_180816_zpsprgiqaxv.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160328_180816_zpsprgiqaxv.jpg.html)
I made the window shutters but couldn't figure out a way to make the hinges work the way I wanted them to. I gave up and just screwed them to the camper. I put also put the hasp on the front door. My to-do list is getting shorter. It's mostly little things left to get it ready for the road. I have to work the next 2 days so I'll be able to rest up and be ready to hit it hard on Thursday.

Clint being an avid classic country fan would certainly know all the lyrics to Johnny Cash's "One Piece at a Time" song.

I enjoy some Johnny Cash music Dave.
I've already got the title straightened out on it. As far as the BMV knows it still looks like this ;) I've checked into it. As long as the camper is removable I can title it as a utility trailer.

I left work a few hours early today so I could get the camper sealed up before the storms and rain roll through tonight and tomorrow. I caulked all around the edges of the roof, windows, and doors. I used 5 tubes of caulking. I picked up a gallon of mis-tinted wood sealer at Lowes for $9 a while back. It had a very light tan color to it. I tested it out on a scrap of siding and liked how it looked. I used a spray gun to put a coat on the barn siding. I was happy with the results. In the picture I've sprayed the left half of the camper. It was getting dark when I finished so I couldn't get a good picture of it done.

I got a little bit work done on it today between thunderstorms. I finished the screen and glass in one window. It got dark before I remembered to get a picture of it.
I wanted a way to securely fasten the back doors to the middle support 2x4 while traveling. I anchored a piece of all thread in it and used an old wrench to lock the doors down. I used a lock washer and lock nut to tighten up the wrench. I might double nut it during for the road just to make sure it stays tight.

Looking great bud! I love the idea. You could find you a self locking nut. It has a nylon bushing inside the nut. If you do, don't use anything high speed like a drill or impact to tighten or loosen it. It will seize up permanently, don't ask how I found that one out.

I finished the windows for the most part. I've got both screens in and plexiglass cut to fit. I'm still working out a way to secure the glass in place but make it easy to remove. I put the last board on the front bed frame. It's all done now. I also made a door handle out of an old weathered mule deer antler. I'm going to start on the brake actuator now.

Let me guess, she wasn't wearin' shoes, right?
-
Nope, barefoot with bibs and riding a horse bare back. That's how they do it down thar'.

JW, no half moon on the door. I'm going for a tool shed look, not an outhouse.
I took apart the actuator hitch. It was a rusted worn out mess inside. The master cylinder was full of rusty sludge. I swapped over all the parts and got everything put back the way its supposed to be. I wasn't able to reuse the gasket on the master cylinder so I took it back off. I'll order a new one and get it installed.

only bibs?

Rrrowl! :-*

Jennifer bought a personal watercraft trailer last year and has wanted to build a little rustic tear drop like this. I just showed her your post
and told her you were pulling it to the Classic. I believe its safe to say I have another project now!!!!!
-
out of curiosity--what did Redneck Ramada I look like?
-
Wildman, there is a ton of information available on building the small teardrop campers. Stop by for a tour at the classic.
Jeffp51, The RRI was something we put together in the week before the classic last year. Bear found some wet paint when we raised the top section up. I had painted it the night before I left. It kept me off the ground and dry last year but wasn't big enough for what I really wanted to build. I traded it for the boat trailer the RRII is on.

Clint, I've had an itch to build a small teardrop camper for awhile. I do have an old boat trail. I never thought of using it for the project.
BTW, I found one of your arrow stuck in 2nd (the small doe) base of the archery baseball field.
-
RR1 sort of looks like a small Gypsy wagon. ;)

Dave, it wouldn't take much work to turn that boat trailer into a flat bed. I hope you decide to do it. I'd like to see what you come up with. Thanks for finding my arrow. I guess just hold on to it until we meet up again.
-
Stickbender, The rounded top did give it that gypsy wagon look. That shape is actually my reflex caul. I traced it onto the 2x6's for the roof frame.
We had very strong winds today with gusts over 50 mph. It was strong enough to blow over our rabbit cage. I checked out the camper when I got home this evening and it looks like it held up just fine. So far its been through several thunderstorms and a wind storm with no damage. There is one small leak but I know how to fix it. I should stay high and dry at the Classic.
-
I've seen your mail lady! :o
-
Clint, if I ever get around to making a camper it will be a cedar strip one with fiber glass covering. I doubt trailer and camper will weight 500 lbs.

Dang Boy, you been, I say you been reading my mind? ( Picture Fog Horn Leg Horn, saying that.) One of the other things on my mental drawing boards, is a little camper, made of cedar strips, using the West system. It is an X type pattern, with the third layer horizontal. Very strong system. It should be about 3/8ths thick. So should be light enough, for a small trailer.

I got the new gasket in the mail this morning and installed the master cylinder. I bled the brakes and then tested them out. One side works perfectly. The other side didn't do anything. I took the hub off and found the problem. No brakes! I'm going to order a new brake assembly for it. I was expecting both sides to be bad so I was happy it was just the one side. The bearings are in great condition. I was worried about what they would look like. The previous owners kept it well greased.

I put down 1/2" insulation on the floor. It has foil on both sides. It should keep any moisture out. I put 1/4" luan over the insulation. This will have to work as a floor until I put down the laminate flooring after the classic. Getting the deck boards covered up made a big difference inside. It feels more like a camper in there now.

Well, sounds like you are down to the details. At least it was easy to figure out your one sided break problem. Looking good bud.

Am I the only one who heard Al Bundy yelling "No breaks! No breaks!"? lol
-
Thanks Patrick.
Urufu, I didn't watch that show so I don't get the joke. I'll look it up tomorrow at work.
I finished up a lot of small jobs on the camper today. I caulked a lot of small spots that needed a second coat. I fixed the leak on the roof hopefully. I moved some boards on the inside of the back door frame to get a better seal. I put weather stripping around all the doors and windows. I finished a first attempt at holding the windows in place while traveling. Once the caulking dries I'll test it out. I used some scrap plywood and made a couple of temporary shelves in the front of the camper. Since the nose is rounded I didn't lose to much floor space.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160406_151217_zpsqomq1rsn.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160406_151217_zpsqomq1rsn.jpg.html)
I pulled the other wheel hub off to inspect the brakes and bearings. They looked like they are in good shape. I found a deal on the big auction site for a set of brakes. It was going to cost me $55 to get one new brake backing assembly. I ended up getting a new set for $65. I'm going to replace both sides so I'll have completely all new brakes.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160406_161859_zpsfjwkxi6p.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160406_161859_zpsfjwkxi6p.jpg.html)
I've been using a wobbly chunk of wood for a step. I took an end cut from an osage log and cut it down to size for a more stable step. I might try to hollow out the bottom so its a little lighter. I had to find a way to use some osage on this project. It's basically ready to hit the road once I get the new brakes put on it. I'll probably find a few more things to do on it before its time to pack it up.

Man Clint, that sure has turned out nice! There is always a few odds and ends to take care of. After you stay in it for a few days you will think of a few more mods to do as well.
Patrick
-
Just 3 weeks, or less, before launch! Looking forward to a complete tour of the home on wheels.
-
Clint, put a lip along those shelves to prevent things from sliding off while traveling. Bungee cord or cargo net might work to hold stuff too.
-
Thanks guys.
Pat, I had already thought about putting a lip on the shelves. I'll stop and get a couple of boards to use.
-
I looked at my old boat trailer today. I don't think I would trust putting in all the work on that trailer. The trailer frame is 2 inch, rusty pipes. When I step on the main arms of the frame between the hitch and the wheels, it flexes. The leaf spring/shock system is suspect, also.
Stickbender, I looked up West System expecting to find plans for the "X" layout for the boards, but discovered it is a marine grade epoxy--interesting. Basically, one would lay out layer 1 in a 45 to 60 degree angle, then layout layer in the same angle by opposite directon to create an X, then the third layer would be horizontal. Basically, you're creating a very strong piece of plywood out of cedar. Light and tough, I like it.
Would you still glass the outside or just coat it with the epoxy?
-
Hedgeapple, The west system, is complete, no need to fiberglass, unless you want to add more weight for more strength. (If you wanted you could lay down the cloth, and brush the west system on it.) I found out about it, a long time ago, in either Popular, Mechanics, or Science. It showed how to make a Pram, using the technique. The guy made a keel, with transom, and square bow. and screwed a board under that, and trimmed it down towards the bow and stern, leaving about an inch or so on each side towards the ends. It is where the ends of the cedar strips will rest, and be epoxied. Then he took plywood, and made the boat shape, but it was not just a cut out rib, it was a piece of plywood, with the bottom, shape, and sides, and they went down from the larger size in the middle to the smallest size near the bow, and stern. He then cut a notch in the middle of the bottom, on the forms, and screwed a strip of pine,or plywood to it the forms, and tacked strips on the insides of the forms, at what would be the topside, where the gunnels would go, to hold the forms, and then put bisqueen over it, and then set the keel and bow, and stern on the center of the forms. Then he took a cedar strip, 1/8th, by one inch, and trimmed the the end at a 45degree angle, and laid it on the board up against the keel. He then took a plastic packing strap, and laid it at a 45 degree angle, and stapled it to the end of the strip, and into the form. Then another cedar strip, another strap stapled to that on, and so on down the line, then he stapled the cedar strips, and plastic straps on down to the edge of the sides, when he had completed one side, he brushed on the west system, and while it was drying, he put the strips, and straps on the other side. and when he was finished doing that side, if the first side had dried, he then pulled the plastic packing straps off, which removed the staples, and then went over the first side with the west system, and then laid out more strips in the opposite direction ( X Pattern ) and did the same plastic strap, and stapling job. and then went to the second side, and removed those plastic straps, and brushed on more West System, and waited for that to dry, and then removed the plastic straps, from the first side, brushed on the West system, where the straps, covered the cedar strip, and then did the same to the second side. After all the straps were removed, and the West System had dried, he trimmed the cedar strips even with the edge where the gunnel would be, and lifted the hull off of the form, and there was a pram shell that only needed a few ribs, and seats, and gunnels. The only place where screw were used was on the gunnels, and attaching the seats to the sides, and those screws were then covered with the West system, except for the screws in the oar locks. They have made full sized sail boats with this system, and they are lighter, and stronger than the fiberglass models, and don't separate from the wood, or leak. I think I would add another strip layer horizontally for some added strength for an ocean going sail boat. I want to make a small 10 - 12 ft. fishing boat, in a modified "Wherry"style, using this system. I also want to make a canoe, and maybe a kyak. But that is all down the road, as time permits, and I still need to save up to buy a band saw to saw the strips, from the left over cedar deck boards, I have, but I need to make a trestle dining table first, and then I may have to buy more cedar deck boards. They are 2 X 6 XI think 10 feet long. Maybe 12, not sure. Didn't measure them. Actual thickness, and width is about 1 1/2 by 5 1/2. So they will be a little wider, than used by the guy to build the pram. A pram, is a Dinghy, with square ends.
That's how I want to build the travel trailer, using this system. For the boat, canoe, and Kyak, I want to make the ribs out of laminated cedar strips on top of one another, using the West System, I can make the the additional layers, less in width, as I layer them, so that there an angled middle in the ribs. I also plan to do that for the frame of the trailer, but use the full width of the board, rather than the 1 1/2 inch strips. Anyway, I hope I have explained it clear enough. It is a simple method, just time consuming cutting the strips, and then stapling them on, and brushing the epoxy on. You can sand it down, to make it nice and shiny. Like I said, if you want you can put the fiberglass cloth over the west system, and then coat it with the west system. Anyway, it will be some time before I can get to these projects, as I have others ahead of them. But there is always the possibility, that I might just bump one of those projects, and insert one of these projects, but it all has to wait till I can afford a band
saw! I also have some ideas for a pontoon boat also. party barge!

Wayne, thanks so much for your detailed description. Using the packing strips to remove the staples is very clever.

Urufu, I didn't watch that show so I don't get the joke. I'll look it up tomorrow at work.
Oh man, I looked everywhere to find a video clip and I'm shocked that it's not out there (my google-fu has failed me). Basically one of the running gags on the show was how crappy his car was, so every once in a while there would be a scene in the living room and you'd hear the sound of a jalopy and Al yelling "No brakes, no brakes!" and a crashing sound from the garage and the family in the living room would gleefully say all together "Daddies home!", lol.
-
Hedgeapple, you can use that method, for a lot of projects. It's limited to your imagination. Oh, yeah, Urufu, Good show, with poor ol Al, and his wife peg, and kids, and at the beginning, it shows the fountain downtown, and you hear a toilet flush, and the fountain plume diminishes......

Today was a big day with the camper progress. I added front ledge boards to the shelves this morning before we had to leave for a birthday party. The new brakes were delivered today. When I got home this afternoon I started putting them on. I replaced the side that was missing first. It went smooth. When I tried taking off the other side one of the bolts was seized up and I ended up rounding the head off. I didn't have a replacement bolt so I put everything back and left that brake on the trailer. It was working good anyway. I was going to replace it with the new one but I'll keep it as a spare instead. We bled the lines again and then decided to take it for a test drive. We went to the nearest town and got some gas. The trailer performed great. The brakes felt smooth and didn't get hot. When I stopped I didn't feel the trailer pushing the truck. It felt like the trailer wasn't even there. I only got it up to 50 mph because of the winding roads. I didn't see any problems with anything. I was very happy with how well the test drive went. It's finally road worthy!

There's the full draw shot!
COM contender! Camper of the Month!
-
Thanks JW. The only thing I don't like about it is the extra tongue length in front of the camper. I think it would look better if it was 2'-3' shorter.
-
Clint, that is awesome! Looks like a mobile hunting camp. You ought to have your own reality show. ;D
-
that long tongue could accomodate a big tool box...
-
I've though about making something like that Howard. I might dig around in the old barns and see if I can find something to make a box in the front. I'll wait until after the Classic. I want to see how the tongue weight works out when its fully loaded.
-
Looking mighty fine Clint, thats a great place in front to store camp items. Easy to get in easy to get out and keeps the camper cleaned up
-
Another project goes in the "completed" column. Congrats, Clint!

Not even close Knoll. I still have some small stuff to finish up before I head to Pappy Land. When I get back I will start on the interior.

That dude sure looks good! Glad it pulls good for ya. I'm just a tad concerned as to how much of the weight is forward of the axles.
Patrick

Yeah. Do you have a guess as to tongue weight? Maybe you could clean up the wheels a bit :-[ :-[ I'm an old hot rodder, if the wheels look good the vehicle looks good. Nothing else matters.
-
Just tell them the extra space is for hauling home your harvest it would look good with a moose or bear strapped on the front porch !
-
Patrick, the tongue weight isn't that bad. It didn't squat my truck down. I'm actually worried about it not having enough weight up fronts once I get it loaded down in the storage compartment. I'll check it after I get it all packed up. I can always move some stuff around to even it up if I need to. I've made a couple of trips to the Classic with my truck bed so loaded down the bumpers were bottomed out on the axles. That was a stressful trip.

Will shag carpet be in place by Marshall?
-
I've had another good day of work on the camper. I vacuumed all the sawdust out, put up a bow hanger, touched up a couple spots of caulking, sprayed a second coat of sealer on it, made a step for the bed platform, did some work on the windows, lightened up my osage step, and put some temporary luan boards along the sides of the bed platform to keep the air mattress from getting splinters. I've only got a couple more things left on my to-do list. I want to put luan boards down in the storage area. I need to stop and buy 2 sheets to finish that job up. I bought some heavy canvas material to cover the bed platform. I'm going to wait to put that down until I'm ready to pack up for the trip to the Classic.
The step and the temporary side boards

The bow rack. I'll reuse this after I finish the inside up.

No but the laminate flooring should be.

Looks great Clint. Looking forward to seeing it at Marshall.
-
Great looking camper. Look for a large plastic storage box for the tongue. I have found a couple of them at yard sales for $5.00 each. It would look good and be good storage for ,"what ever", chain saw, tool bow, small grill etc.
-
That dude sure looks good!
I found some tire cleaner in the garage and sprayed the tires with it. The old rims match the rest of the camper.
-
Thanks Jeb. I'm not sure if a plastic toolbox would match the rest of the camper. I'll come up with something to put there.
Thanks PNewton. I'm looking forward to not having to set up and take down my tent this year.
-
You know, thinking about it, was that trailer made for a fiberglass boat? If so the tubing will be plenty heavy enough for what ever. The axles are farther back to account for the weight of the fuel and larger outboard motor.
IIf it doesn't squat your truck much then you may have to add something to the tung to help ballance out the load so you don't put too much stress on the rear axel of the trailer.
Load it with the tung jack lowered to keep the trailer level. Check the tires as you load so that they are squatting fairly evenly. If you can pick up the tung without much effort then it's back heavy. You should be able to pick up the tung but it should be fairly heavy. If it is the load should be balanced enough to have even strain on both axles.
II worked in the manufacturing of the boats and the trailers for a few years. If I remember right that was an 18 foot boat trailer.

The old rims match the rest of the camper.

I went and got the temporary license plate for it today. I hope the real plate shows up before I have to leave.
-
An old license plate would look right at home on it.
-
Just tell them the extra space is for hauling home your harvest it would look good with a moose or bear strapped on the front porch !
Now there's an idea, if you need more weight on the front Clint how about an actual porch? Even if just for show, bolt a rocking chair on it etc, lol.
-
I was thinking more like a grill and a stave press. I was gonna mention the wheels, but I figured you were maintaining the rustic look. You've accomplished quite a bit in a short time on this unit. Josh
-
Thanks Josh. I've had the though to make a work bench on the front with a small vise. It's on my to-do list with a question mark. I kind of want to see how the tongue weight works out before I add anything to it.

Visually I bet it would look cool with an old stil up front, but that might send the wrong message the the local authorities, lol.

Juxtaposition of spinners and barn siding would be perfect.

I'm not sure if hubcaps of any kind would fit on those rims. Baby moons for sure won't, they normally clip onto the lumps and bumps of the center. The white spoke wheels are flat.

I finished up the last of the items on my to-do list. I put a layer of luan down in the storage area. I wanted to keep road moisture out and cover up the openings between the deck boards so the mosquitoes don't sneak in at night.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160416_175651_zpst8pkdfkg.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160416_175651_zpst8pkdfkg.jpg.html)
I really liked the looks of the old rusty hasp on the entry door but that was the only thing holding it shut. I was afraid it might break while on the road. It was pretty thin. I had a sturdier hasp but it wasn't rusty. I soaked it in vinegar to remove the zinc coating. It's already starting to rust.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160416_210445.png_zpsncgaufvt.jpeg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160416_210445.png_zpsncgaufvt.jpeg.html)
I built a platform on the tongue to use as a work bench or whatever. I didn't want to drill into the frame so I used some all thread to make U bolts and put some tubing over them to keep from eating into the paint. When I get a welder I would like to weld some angle onto the frame and redo the bench with an angled cut on the ends instead of being stepped like it is now. I bolted a small vise onto a board that I can clamp to the bench. I'll be able to do some bow work back at camp now if I want to.

I took this old lantern that Jeb gave me and converted it over to a battery powered LED flicker bulb. When I get set up at camp I'll put a hanger for it on the side of the camper.

My Dad gave me this old rope bottom chair to use with the camper. It matches the look I'm going for. The only thing I have left to do is put the license plates and a small chainsaw sign on the camper if they get delivered before I leave.

Heck of a project. Nice! Thanks for taking us on the ride ... so to speak.
See ya soon.

Thats cool as heck buddy! And yea, thanks for taking us along the ride with you!

I wish I could be at the Classic to see this 5 star, redneck camper. You should take a couple/three chicken down with you. They wouldn't have to come home; they could be dinner. :)
Once while kayaking, I met a 4 or 5 good ol boys/ rednecks camping. They h ad 3 0r 4 chickens in a pen next to their arm surplus tent. One of my paddling friends said to them, "Ok, I've gotta ask, what's up with the chickens."
Redneck boy replies, "Well, we just had a couple coolers and we needed them for beer. So, we brought the chickens for supper."
-
Thanks Knoll and Patrick.
Dave, with my history with chickens at bow shoots I don't think I'll be bringing any live ones (http://rabbittalk.com/images/smilies/chicken-87.gif)
I finished up a few more small details. I still need to make some quick curtains for it. I delegated that job to my Mom.
I cut the work bench ends off at an angle to match the frame.

I put down the duck canvas on the bed platform. When I finish the interior I'll glue it down nice and smooth.

I made a carpenter bee trap out of the barn siding scraps.

Have you thought about using the rubber like material they use for putting in tile on the floor of showers, or the stuff they use for flat roofs?
Hedgeapple, he could build a chicken coop, on the front, instead of a tool box. ;) That would give it a redneck upper class look! OOOOhhh, :o you could call the camper ....... oooohh ...... are you ready ......"The chiken hock! You know like the chicken hawk in the WB cartoons, The little guy who grabs Fog Horn Leg Horn, by the neck, and says "Are yas gonna come along peacefully, or am I gonna have to muss ya up a bit?!" You could paint a drum stick under the name! Drum stick, hock.......like ham hock, only chiken hock.... Chiken, is a red neck Chicken, looks the same, tastes the same ,but it isn't spelled with a " z ".
ah,it was just an idea....... sigh...... but in my minds eye, it looked perfect...... ::) ::) :P Comming along right nice! Thanks for sharing, keep us updated with lots of pictures.
Wayne
P.S. do you think you could talk your Wife into posing with a bonnet on her head, and a corn cob pipe in her, mouth, and holding a big wooden spoon, in one hand and a dutch oven, or big frying pan in her other hand, standing by the door? Yeah, I didn't think so either, but it was a thought ;)
-
lol
-
Put a rockin' chair on that porch and call er good. :)
-
No chicken coop for me. I'm not sure what I'll do with the front yet. I'll see how much use the bench gets this week. I got a reproduction sign to hang on the outside. I also put up some curtains but forgot to get a picture. I'll try to take one tomorrow before I leave.

Thats cool Clint!
Patrick
-
Can't wait to see it in person, see ya Wednesday good lord willing!
-
I pulled it to the classic today and everything went good. I had the storage area packed full. It was quite a load.
-
Good to hear there was no drama on the way to TN. See ya in couple days.
-
Glad to hear you made it down safely Clint. Can't wait to check it out in person in a few days.
-
Today should have tested the water tightness !!!!!
-
It's been through several downpours with no leaks while I've been here. I'm very happy with how well its functioned as a camper this week. I have plenty of room in it.
-
Sweet!

I'm finally getting caught up on some recent bow projects and I'm able to get back to work on the RRII. The maiden journey to the Classic was a great success. After living in it for a week I figured out some changes that needed to be fixed. The first thing was the bed platform was to high. I wanted to make sure I had plenty of storage room in the back. After hauling a full load I had some excess room. I dropped the bed 7 5/8". That brings it down to a normal bed height and makes the inside look bigger.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160516_144402_zpsjlvgcnbu.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160516_144402_zpsjlvgcnbu.jpg.html)
I started insulating it. I was planning on going with the foam board insulation but decided to go with the foil covered bubble wrap instead. The R value was higher with the foil plus its easier to install. I'm putting a single layer on the walls and a double layer on the ceiling. The R value should be pretty high with the double layer. I could tell a big difference in the heat coming off the ceiling once I got it done today. My next day off I'm going to remove the shelves and finish the insulation. I got about 75% done today. I want to get the floor down to. That's all I'll have time to do before Marshall.
I also had some curtains made for it. I used old arrows as curtain rods.

Looking forward to seeing your remade at Marshall!

Here's hoping for a safe trip to and from Marshall for the Redneck Ramada II , and everyone else that will be traveling there.

Much appreciated BJ .....Clint and I will be rolling into Marshall early Wednesday PM....will be good to meet ya.

-
Clint ... temps look like ya may need bit of ventilation in there!
-
Thanks guys.
Knoll, I get good ventilation through the two windows. At 2 am when I crawl into the camper it's cooled off. The insulation should help keep the daytime heat down.
I finished installing the insulation today. I had some left over so I added a 3rd layer to almost all of the ceiling. When I was done with that I started on the flooring. That went pretty quick. It makes it look a lot better inside.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160519_192007_zps0xysau9r.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160519_192007_zps0xysau9r.jpg.html)
New floor mat installed

I put the temporary shelves back up. I need to come up with an idea for a permanent setup.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160519_204147_zpsp7v4z3yk.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160519_204147_zpsp7v4z3yk.jpg.html)
I got a memory foam mattress for it. No more noisy and uncomfortable air mattress. The box said it might take 48 hours to fully expand. The mattress is a little larger than the bed platform. I'll wedge it in there once it takes shape.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160519_195723_zpsmogbabnd.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160519_195723_zpsmogbabnd.jpg.html)

Looking more like the Shangri-la than a redneck remade!
Patrick
-
Do ya need the stepstool to get into the bed? 8)
-
Not since I lowered the bed platform Knoll. I'm keeping the step stool for around camp.
-
Yep, it's truly beginning to look classy. You wife is going to be proud to go camping in that rig!
-
Did you insulate under the bed?
Patrick
-
No. I insulated the walls in the storage area.
-
That should do the trick bud!
Patrick
-
Clint , I was going to see if you wanted to swing by here on the way up and grab this mattress but looks like you have it all taken care of.
Looks good
See ya in a few days

I installed the electric this morning. I put an outlet at normal height and one at the ceiling level controlled by a flat switch. The light I want to use will plug into the upper outlet.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160608_111839_zps4vbjer5v.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160608_111839_zps4vbjer5v.jpg.html)
I ran the wire out the bottom of the wall and put a plug on it. Now I can run an extension cord to it and have electric inside.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160608_111904_zpsmhd3udzo.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160608_111904_zpsmhd3udzo.jpg.html)
-
Here's a little Tip; Cut the plug end off of an old extension cord and plug it in to the outlet while you are towing it. It will keep the mud and sand out.
-
Looks good Clint, I'm glad I got to see it in person. It sure is a cool little camper!
Patrick
-
I'd highly recommend also wiring up a few 12 volt lights and wiring, then mount a battery box on the tongue. You will use 12 volt more than 120, by far.

Thats a good idea Pearl!

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut here and there Patrick!

...and a solar battery maintainer will keep the battery charged up with light use.

I already planned on doing that Mullet. Thanks for the tip though.

I don't think I'll need 12 volts for anything. I've spent almost 2 weeks in the camper without electric and did just fine. The only reason I'll use any electric will be for lights and a phone charger. I might put a small space heater in there for cooler weather. Plus with that long tongue I'm trying to keep the weight down in front. Adding a battery or two won't help that out any.
-
Awww, there ya go. next thing will be a microwave and then a TV. Then a flush toilet. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
You are knocking all the rough edges off of that bad boy. I bet it is going to be a lot more comfortable for you at next year's Classic. I like the Ramada II.
-
Our Teardrop is all 12 volt. Battery box on the tongue, wired to the trailer lites so they charge while driving and a small solar panel when we are unhooked. I have a converter in the back for phone chargers and computer and pump on the mattress.
-
I'll see how it goes with the regular wiring. I can add 12 volt later if I see that I need it.
I got started on the ceiling. The curves on this thing give it some character but it sure would have been easier to build if it was square. Trying to get that front piece in place and screwed down by myself was very aggravating. I only got up two pieces before it started to get dark. I'm planning on finishing it up this weekend.

This has been fun read. Gonna be sad to see it completed!
-
Knoll, projects like this are never completed ;) :) You are always thinking of things that make it more comfortable and convenient . Looking good Clint. :)
Pappy
-
That inside paneling looks awesome Clint
-
Thanks. I went back and forth on several different options for the inside. I wanted to do cedar but that was to expensive and the reviews online for what I was going to buy said most of the planks were warped and couldn't be used. I looked at paneling and didn't find anything I liked. I decided to go with birch plywood until I went to a different lumber store. I found 1/4" underlayment that looked very similar to the birch plywood but was less than half the cost. I'm going to stain it after I get it all installed. I think the wood grain will show more with the stain and sealer on it.
Pappy, you are right. I doubt this will ever be 100% finished.
-
I remember the 1st time I did some remolding in my house (its an old farm house) one off my neighbors asked me when I'd be done working on my house. I said when I dig a hole and bury it.
-

Some young people just don't understand this. The work is never done, there is always something. A good reason to learn to do stuff on your own.
-
I finished the ceiling and most of one wall today. Working around all the curves, outlets, door, bed platform, and windows makes it take forever. I bet I took over 20 measurements on the last piece of siding I put up today :P

Clint, i gotta say thats prolly the coolest rig ever. Seein it first hand , its perfect. Been showin everyone i know the pics and they cant believe it. Well done.
-
Thanks. It's been a lot of fun seeing how much people like it. Just stopping for gas turns into an adventure sometimes.
I'm working on the second wall now. The heat is slowing me down.
-
Definite chick magnet right Clint, or was that just the dancing bear😃
-
Probably a little of both Bubby ;D
I have all the walls and ceiling done. All I have left to do is the front of the bed platform and the ledge at the back end of it. That should be pretty easy to do since its all flat and straight lines. I will have a lot of trim work to do on it. I'm thinking about gluing a natural fiber rope in the corner between the ceiling and walls as corner trim.

I like the rope idea. Good one!
-
Lookin' good!
-
I finished the last few pieces on the bed platform. It's all done and ready for stain. I'm doing that tomorrow morning. I had an idea on what to do on the blank wall on the outside of the camper. I want to make a slightly oversized osage bow that looks like its at full draw towards the sky with an arrow nocked.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160612_193654_zpsfmez8vge.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160612_193654_zpsfmez8vge.jpg.html)
-
I started to stain it this morning. I got 2 panels in before I decided it was to dark. I spent all morning replacing them. I've worked for 4 hours and I'm finally at the point where I stopped at last night :P
-
Been there buddy!
Patrick
-
. . . I'm finally at the point where I stopped at last night :P
;D
-
I've retraced my steps more than once. But if you add all the time up over your life it probably doesn't amount to much. ;) ;)
-
I got some lighter stain and finally got it all done. I feel like I had a Mr. Miyagi paint the fence workout. I was closing up the camper for the night and realized I forgot to stain the door. I had to get a flashlight to finish that up. The walls don't really match the floor but I'm not to worried about it. Once I get the trim done and everything moved back in I don't think it will look to bad. I used the stain/polyurethane combo and there isn't to many options of that available. I couldn't find a shade that looked good with the floor.
-
Today I worked on the trim work. I used some leftover barn siding scraps. I trimmed around the windows and door.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160614_171149_zpsoup1hh9t.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160614_171149_zpsoup1hh9t.jpg.html)
I also ran a strip of barn siding around the floor. It doesn't look like I got much done but I worked on it all day. It felt like I was in slow motion today. I couldn't clear the cobwebs out of my head it seemed like. I made a list of stuff to finish the trim work. I'll get some supplies and finish up the ceiling and around the bed platform on Thursday.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160614_171251_zpssgmjpezb.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160614_171251_zpssgmjpezb.jpg.html)

I like the contrast between the wall and floor. The barn siding breaks it up nicely!

Elm Hall is within a day or two of my anniversary every year. That might be pushing the limits with the wifey.
I leave for mojam this year the day after our anniversary. So that means I'm packing up on my anniversary and the wife is probably going to help me. :o
Patrick
-
Good luck with that Patrick.
I did some more trim work today around the bed platform. I still need to tack down the canvas material and figure out if I'm cutting the mattress down to fit. I was hoping to finish all the trim today but I ended up helping my dad with his project. I have 2 more boards to put on the ceiling and then put the rope along the corners.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160616_202025_zpsqayl0vhm.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160616_202025_zpsqayl0vhm.jpg.html)
I also rebuilt the shelves in the front. I'm not 100% happy with them but I guess they will work.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160616_202056_zpswpwv06xm.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160616_202056_zpswpwv06xm.jpg.html)
I didn't like how the plastic outlet covers looked so I replaced them with wooden covers that I stained. This is one of the wall panels that I had to replace. I had to piece it together because I was out of full sheets. I wasn't very happy with that but I didn't want to drive an hour to home depot for one board.

Nice!
-
Thanks guys.
I put another heavy coat of water sealer on the front and back of the camper today. I'll have to get another gallon to finish the back side. I was going to put up the light but decided to test it out first. It wasn't as bright as I wanted. For what I paid for that LED tape light it should have been brighter. I'm going to return it and get something else.
I folded the edges and tacked down the canvas on the bed platform.

Mullet, you missed a chance at seeing it at the Classic. You better not miss next year.
Danzn Bar, Anytime you want to use it just let me know.

We have some very severe storms heading our way tonight. The weather guy says its the worst storms we've had since 2012. It figures I get the camper just about done and a storm will blow it away. I parked the truck right next to it to try and block some of the wind. The house and garage should help also. I hope its still there in the morning.
This afternoon I dulled some trade points and hafted them on my curtain rods. I got them hung back up.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160622_202912_zpsf6awurfb.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160622_202912_zpsf6awurfb.jpg.html)
I got a sheet set for the bed. The curtains don't match. I have a couple extra pillow cases. I might have my mom sew them into new curtains.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160622_203225_zpsyjpmqkwx.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160622_203225_zpsyjpmqkwx.jpg.html)
I exchanged the light for a brighter one. It's still low profile so it won't take up much headroom. The cord doesn't look good going across the ceiling. I didn't want a hard wired light. If it goes out I want to be able to unplug it and swap it out with a new one without removing ceiling and wall panels. I moved the light all around the camper and that is where I got the most even lighting. I'll just have to get used to the cord being there. I still need to mount the battery puck light on the ceiling over the bed for when I don't have electric hookup.

I hung the bow rack up. I also put up some hooks to hang towels on and some screw eyes on the front of the bed platform. When the storage area is full I put my cooler, toolbox, etc. up against the bed platform and strap them down. It keeps the weight more over the axles and off the tongue.

If the RRII makes it through tonight it will make it through anything.

Ya need to seriously consider sumpin a bit more flowery.

I woke up at 1:30 am and realized my roof overlaps are facing the wrong direction for the oncoming wind. I could just see the roof panels peeling back like a sardine can. I tried to tell myself it would be OK but I couldn't go back to sleep. So I grabbed a flashlight and headed outside. I used some ratchet straps and a tow strap to hold it down. That's about all I can do to prepare it for the wind. I hope it holds. Now its 2:00 am and I'm wide awake >:(

Hope all went well last night, storms missed us, update please when you get time. :)
Pappy
-
The storms haven't hit yet pappy. Should be here real soon though. I've been getting up every hour to check the radar.
-
I just looked at it also, looks like it just passed Cincy. Good luck.
Pappy
-
We just caught the edge of it Pappy. Just east of us got hit hard with 60 mph winds, 1" hail, and at least one reported tornado. I did a lot of worrying and preparation for nothing. Better safe than sorry I guess. I'm going to get some sleep now.
-
Glad it turned out good for ya, by the way camper is really shaping up nice. :)
Pappy
-
Glad to hear storm missed ya. Lost sleep is easily replaced.
-
Looks mighty fancy to me!
Glad the storms missed you
Take care of yourself
-
Good Karma, nothing to worry about with it from now on. Just carry a wheel bearing kit with you. 8)
-
That's a good idea. I don't know what size bearings to get. How would I find out?
A few people have suggested a small wood stove for it. I didn't want to do that but I did find something close. It got delivered today. It has 2 heat settings or it can just have the flames with no heat. It has a nice glow with the lights off. (http://rabbittalk.com/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif)

Pearly sent me this cool looking candle holder for my project. One of my LED candles fits in it nicely.

Happy wife happy life. Really getting the RRII looking pretty fancy. You really did a nice job on her Osage. Sure glad the storm wasn't as bad for you as predicted. I'll be staying tuned in to see what else you come up with.
-
I tried making a slideshow of all the pictures of the build with some music in the background. Just remove the space in the link.

Back many years ago, that type of candle holder was used to hang out in front of the cat houses. When it was lit they was open for business.
So Pearl, where exactly did you acquire this "candle holder"???
Patrick
-
Patrick, the candle that I'm putting in that holder can switch to a red color ;) The RRII might start paying for itself ;D
I put the finishing touches on the camper. I did some caulking, sealed the back side, and made an antler door handle and latch for the inside. I made the handle low profile so it wouldn't stick out much on the inside.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160625_190843_zpsows9ei8a.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160625_190843_zpsows9ei8a.jpg.html)
I also painted the storage area and put up some scrap wall panels on the inside walls. I wanted it to have a more finished look. I didn't like the insulation and unpainted 2x4's showing.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160626_193549_zps4hs2dng2.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160626_193549_zps4hs2dng2.jpg.html)
For the most part it's completely finished. I still want to change the front deck and make a bow and arrow to hang on the back side. I don't know when I'll get to that. I'll post an update when I get to it. Thanks for following along. Posting updates motivated me to work harder on it. And thanks to Jeb, Pearly, and PatB for donating items for it. Sorry if I forgot anybody.

Thanks for taking Us along for the "ride" Clint - it's bee a lot of FUN ! Bob
-
Great job. Thanks for taking us along.

I decided to do a few upgrades. The camper now has AC (http://rabbittalk.com/images/smilies/r_boumcy.gif) I put it under the bed platform. The camper wouldn't have looked right with a window unit hanging out the side of it. I put a small drain pan under it for the condensation. It drains out the bottom of the floor. I'll leave the back door partly open to allow the exhaust to escape. It's working great so far.

I'm also working on a slide out kitchen unit for the back. I have it framed up. Tomorrow I'll get the plywood on it and install the sink. I plan on having running water. I have a couple ideas on how to do it. I will have to remove the kitchen and AC when I am fully loaded at the Classic.

Looking good Clint!
I'm sure the wife will love it.
My wife says that I need to make her one just like it.
Patrick

You might not get her out of it Clint what's not to like about it.
Bjrogg

That's awesome! Glad she liked it.
-
Good deal Clint!
I know what you mean about having the time. You will figure it out bud.

I did a little more work on the kitchen unit. I got it skinned, stained, and painted. I used the dark stain that didn't work out for the inside of the camper. The paint is some industrial exterior epoxy that I had leftover from the original RR. I also did a test fit with the sink. I wanted to use a smaller sink but I got a deal on this one that I couldn't pass up. Now I need to make the cabinet doors and do some plumbing and trim work.

Wow, bud! Have been to some Ramada's that weren't nearly as nice as what you're creating.
-
Man, it just keeps getting better. 8)
-
The wife must have liked it better than I thought. She is planning a week long road trip for next summer already.
Is she planning on taking you :o
-
Hahaha
-
Now is the time to start manipulatin the parameters.. First off, tell her it must fall between Apr 23 - May 7. Then if she bites...
>:D >:D
-
I put a second thick coat of white paint on the top and made some cabinet doors for it today. All the hard work is done. It just needs trimmed out and the plumbing hooked up.
I'm not to crazy about how the hinges look but I'm trying to keep the budget as low as possible on this project. I didn't feel like spending a lot on special cabinet hinges.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20160808_185507_zpsrfuggmay.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20160808_185507_zpsrfuggmay.jpg.html)

Coming along nicely, Clint. Can you put the hinges to the inside? ...or just paint them.
-
Looking good Clint!
I say the hinges, need some rust on them.

The wife must have liked it better than I thought. She is planning a week long road trip for next summer already.
You could say that it needs to be the third week of July and you have to make a trip through Marshall Missouri. >:D
Her and my wife could go hit all the flea markets! Then come back to camp and enjoy some homemade apple pie! >:D
Just a small suggestion.
Patrick

The kitchen unit is finally finished and installed.

Pealy donated a portable shower bag. I hook up the tubing to one side of the faucet. I put a garden hose fitting on the other side. The water bag setup should be enough to wash your hands and clean some dishes. It holds 5 gallons of water.

Ozzy volunteered to test it out by cooking some bacon and eggs for breakfast. I wasn't able to use the water setup. The clubs water supply had a bad odor. I didn't want to ruin the shower bag.

Very cool Clint.

Great work! I have camper envy...
-
I got the chance to see this rig in person over the weekend. Pictures can't do it justice, it's a real beauty!
-
Man that camper has everything including the kitchen sink!
-
Nice job on the kitchen Clint, redneck innovation at its best buddy.
-
Thats awesome Clint! Sure is a testament of redneck ingenuity!

Another reason to look forward to TN ... the grand tour!
