Title: POWDER HORNS
Post by: mullet on February 11, 2016, 08:40:34 pm
I know a few on here play the Rendevous, and just like black powder. Pappy asked on his site for some Horn examples and I thought I'd post some of mine. I'd love to see some of everybody else's.

Thanks Eddie, very nice stuff, don't think mine will turn out like that but it did give me some ideas. Is the smaller powder horn what would be for pistol powder, the measuring thing is what I was really wondering about, :-\ it seems in the movies they just take the end off and pour it in ?? Do they all have a way to measure the amount of powder you take out ? What did you seal the inside of the rum keg with ? I think you told me but I have slept since then and forgot.  ;) :)  Sorry Lots of question , that's what you get when you try and make something you know nothing about. ???

Nice collection Eddie ! I'm going to do a small flat Horn for My next project. Bob

Post by: mullet on February 12, 2016, 07:17:17 am
Pappy, the smaller horns are priming horns for my flintlocks. The only horn with the pre-measured spout is the black one with the long brass nipple. All the others are pull the plug and pour. The French style with my name is plugged with a violin string tuner. The rum keg is sealed inside with Bee's wax. You can use small deer horn hollowed out or even small pieces of river cane for powder measures.

Bob, I'd like to try and make a Flat horn myself and an Elk horn also. I just saw a real nice one in this month's Muzzleloader Magazine.

Biff Moore gave me all his BP stuff, guns, possible bags and horns, molds, powder and two large tackle boxes full of every kind of M/L accessories when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Here are the horns and some of the bags, I have two more out in the shop.

I've got a Buffalo horn I'm going to try and flatten when I get a chance. Here's my shot bag I made. This was supposedly a very old bag when I bought it. I had to replace the leather. It was worn paper thin.

Wow, I had forgotten about that tulip spout horn, Eddie.  And now the reveal:  I screwed up a critical measurement and the brass tulip was my "fix".

Second reveal: It looks better this way than it would have the way I had planned.

Just a cautionary tale:  A powderhorn is a grenade.

I was at a shooting event and 5 minutes after this feller had taken his last shot, 50 yards from the shooting range, his powderhorn exploded, sending shrapnel going everywhere.  Somewhere a small spark had landed somewhere on his german silver mechanical measuring spout on the tip of his horn.  Somewhere in the join was a hair thin gap that over the years had likely collected fine dust from the black powder, making like a fuse.

In camp that night, we all gathered around to try to pick apart what had happened.  Eventually, it turned to stories of powderhorns people had seen blow up.  The one story that we heard from multiple sources and happening in one place after another.....well, that was the tale of the person leaving the plug hanging from a thong, leaving the horn open to a flame source.  Everyone in camp cut the cord that night.  With no cord, the plug remains in your hand or in your mouth and an impediment you cannot ignore.  It just seems to make folks return the plug to where it belongs.

Sorry for the fuzzy pictures- I have made several horns but this is the one I have used for many years. The rifle is a Mark Silver Rifle in 58 cal. I built from a Chambers kit. The woven hemp bag is for holding round balls. The finger is made from deer antler and holds my priming powder. I shoot 2F powder and grind it to a powder and use it for priming. I have used the wooden plug to crush and grind the 2F powder while in the pan. Super fast ignition. No need to buy a priming powder. The light colored ash handle pipehawk was forged by a friend is a very close reproduction of Squire Boones in the Indiana Museum. The other is a store bought repro with a hickory handle. The knife is also forged by a friend and has elk antler handles from a rack I found in Colorado. The bag is a brain tan deer I tanned and is bear oil rubbed. Love my gear and making what I use.

A lot of Primitive ranges will not let you have a horn on the firing line. They had a good article in the Muzzleloader magazine about horns and cans exploding at shooting tables.

If you like the yellow colors in the horns, I believe it was Ritz dyes that can be used to soak or boil white horns to stain them. I wonder what colors an osage coloring would make a white horn???

Anyone tried the osage stain??

Neat thread. You guys do some awesome work. I've made two powder horns, one of cow and one buffalo. Mine pale in comparison to the ones you guys have done. This is one of my shooting bags, but the powder horn is just a commercially made one. The bag is patterned after a Cheyenne one in the NMNH collections. CC

Here are my horns. The 3 lower horns are ones that I have made myself. Not works of art but they do the job. I haven't tried my hand at scrimshaw so I haven't tackled that part although I admire that skill and it surely adds a lot to them. Maybe someday. The buffalo horn on the right was made for me several years ago by a man from Kingsville Texas and the horn on the left I picked it up at rendzvous.
