This is that gnarly chunk of elm I was working on, I managed to get a shooter out of it, not without a fight
but we negotiated a truce with each other. I heated and clamped this stave about 9 times. You can see the dents
that I put in the back removing twist forgot to pad the jaws of a cresent wrench I used ::). Yes the lower limb is shorter
due to where I placed the grip, but thats where it shoots the best so I wasn't gonna argue with her. I have 500 arrows thru
her and she shows no sign of failing and shoots pretty nice for a crooked, gnarly old stick. I didn't get carried away with sanding and
finishing, so she has a few battle scars, finished her off with charcoal and pig fat(lard)
She may not compare with some of the gussied up pretty ladies ya see around here but in my eyes shes a beauty, just have to look past the surface
and see what on the inside ;D
Her vital statistics:
47#@26" 57" NTN 1.5" at grip Mass is 18.25oz
Badger if ya see this please calculate the mass, I think she's bit fat :o
Still haven't decided on a name, I usually don't name a bow but this little lady deserves one. Suggestions are welcome.

I cant believe you made that ugly stave into a nice bow like that. Great job
Did that woodpecker carve it for ya? If so name it peckerwood :D :D :D :D :D :D :D.
Jesse
-
Fine lookin bow Dana.
-
Ugly :o I'm shocked you wood say that about a lady Jesse ;)
Thanks Dano, it was a fun project.
-
Dana, I love bows like that. They make great dependable shooters. As far as mass goes sometimes on a character stave I just throw the mass thing out the window. But if you were to figure it. I would figure it at 53# @ 28". For a hunting bow always good to give a couple inches safety margin on the draw, I can't tell how much the handle is actuall bending but about 12 or 13 oz is what the formula would allow. D bows are by far the lowest mass bows as well as elbs. If building a d bow by the mass formula it will almost always come out more like an elb. I have built several elm bendy handle bows in the 50# class and most of them are about 1" wide when finsihed. Still a nice bow you have there. Steve
-
Thanks steve for the input, still trying to get a handle on your mass formula, I'm using it
on all my bows now, but its going to take some experience to get a good grasp of it.
The handle is bending a fair amount but the stave has a pretty good deflex in that area so
it may appear to be bending more than it is. This is my first bendy handle bow and I like it ;D
-
nice job dana love those nocks
-
Figured you would jamie :) Inspired by the bow you sent me, which I still plan on using
come Oct 1st, hopefully I will take my firsy selfbow deer with it ;D

Pappy thanks, and their ain't much else to do but make bows when ya have 3 feet of snow on the ground >:(
-
nice bow, dana. i particularly like the nocks. how do you like elm for bow wood? i've got a stave in my basement, that's waiting to become a holmegaard. just haven't had the time (nor the guts) to tackle it.
-
Marius this was my first piece of elm I worked and its tough stuff.
I would love to try a straight one. Welcome back.
-
Dana, good looking bow from a rough-looking chunk of wood. I like the charcoal and grease finish, too. Name it "Elmo". ;D
-
Dana, looks like you nailed it, great job on that bow, makes me reconsider some of the crooked wood drying in my pile. That woodpecker is purty, my father has some really huge ones that come to his suet bag. Yesterday I had a pair of cardinals at my feeder, a beautiful contrast to the bright white snow. If they're back today I'll have to get some pics
VB
-
Thanks Steve, elmo eh hmmmmm
VB If ya don't want the crooked stuff I will take it off yer hands ;D
-
Sweet looking bow Dana. The style oh bow that you picked seems to really fit that piece of wood. I like the way you did the nocks. Keenan
-
A nice bow. Elm is good stuff ;)
-
Thanks Keenan and Andrew

Good lookin' bow Dana...they say that beauty is only skin deep, it's the soul that matters! ;D I think that bow has ample soul! ;)

Neat bow I like the jog in the limb ,Miss Winter would be a good name even the desolation of winter brings about a nd reveals a charm and beauty of its own
-

-
OK you have my curiosity aroused why Bob ?
-
Great job Dana,love the knocks.
-
Why not bob?Johnny cash had his song a Boy Named Sue, why not a Bow named Bob ;D
Hey maybe bob will weigh in onthis ;)
-
Took her out in the backyard shootin today, had to snowblow a trail but what the heck
only lost 3 arrows in the snow ;D Starting to get cabin fever bad, can only shoot about 10'

-
damn! looking good there. I see you have snow as well. I was out huntin saturday and the snow was until my hips.
-
Thanks guys.
Finnish like I said I had to snowblow 2 feet of snow to make a shooting lane :o 8)
-
Dana, you need to get rid of that snowblower and use a grain scoop ;D. Shovels snow efficiently and keeps ya in shape ;D >:D.
-
I bought my wife a snow scoop it keeps her lean and mean. The snowblower is a mans toy ::)
-
Dana,
I like that bow. It just looks like a solid hunting bow. I think you tillered it well also.
-
Thanks huntersim, I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can take her in the woods
-
I like it, Dana! Nice job! Wells
-
Dana, can ya show how you wrap that Silencer on your string Mine always end up fat on one end and skinny on the other.
I got some rabbit skin today maybe that will make a difference, Ive been using that bear skin.
-
Just open the string up and tuck one end then wrap around sting and tuck the other end in.
Ya have to go the right way or it won't stay, can't remember if ya go same direction as the
string is twisted or opposite ::) I usually do it wrong the first time, bear fur might be a bit stout
rabbit should work better
-
Very nice Dana. You've been very productive lately, puttin the rest of us to shame. :)
-
Have two more to post need to get some pictures though :)
