Now that is cool, I have a couple I made that blow from the end, I may have to try that type, any advice on where and how to drill the hole/size and other tid bits of info that might help. :)

Thanks, I got that design from ancient bronze age metal horns, and also african horns often blow from the side. I felt that it leaves the curve of the horn more intact, I did not have to cap the tip. I just stuck a thin branch into the horn to check where the cavity ends and drilled the hole there.

I'm guessing the horn is from a long horn steer?
Cool 8)

;D Nope, it's from a highlandcattle my neighbour keeps. A cousin of he two cows in the pic, if I'm not mistaking. And they taste great, as well...
-
Nice!
Wonder if they make good hornbows..
-
I never made one, but there's most often two curves to these horns, some kind of spiralling, cows and bulls alike... ??? Exeption are the ox (most of the bull calves are gelded so they can stay with the herd), theirs are one curve. Should ask him for a pair of these.

Thanks for the info and photos. Cool looking cattle 8)
and neat horns.

What size hole ? Did you drill the small hole first ? and then bigger inlet for your mouth? I was thinking a small hole [ what size] and counter sink the larger just not all the way through for your lips. :-\ Just checking before I ruin a nice horn. :)

Pappy, that's what I did. I then enlarged the cavity of the mouthpiece until I got a sound. A coarse one. I tried to adapt my technique to get it clearer, until I saw my five year old daughter blow out a cristal clear, fat note. I then enlarged it further, now it sounds quite well, but still, the little one can do better... :P
Now it's about an inch wide and half an inch deep.

Now that is cool! I might have to make one - in all of my SPARE time of course!

Yep, I can see one in my future , I had a good friend fro FL. come up to hunt this fall and brought me a bunch of Longhorn horns they raise down there. I Was trying to figure out what to do with them before some of the guys around there find them and make tip over lays or something like that out of them, ??? they are way to cool for that. I made a couple that blow from the end in the past but the problem was getting the hole through the solid end without busting through the side because of the curve in the horn, seems this one you made would be easier to control the drill hole. ;) Thanks. I think I will start with about 5/16 hole and go from there.

Good looking Shofar there.

Awesome. And with the side blown it can double as a beer (mead) funnel when the party really gets going, lol.
