Title: That wood we love!
Post by: Stringman on January 30, 2016, 11:08:25 pm
Osage orange Birdseye burl. I have no idea how common this is, but it's the first time I've ever seen it. Can't wait to start making with this stuff.

Photobucket has been funky lately, but I'll try to get some more pics when it stops acting up.

A friend found an area where a lot of the osage trees had wart like burls all over the trunks, not just one or two burls but dozens on each trunk, these trees were really diseased.

He was turning bowls at the time and cut a bunch  of burls for wood turning, mostly off one dead tree that almost solid burls.

He gave me his trimmings which I used for handle and nock overlays on my bows. Unfortunately, osage being osage, when the wood darkened the grain of the burl wood became much less spectacular.

Oh man thats nice! If you end up with some 3/4" x 2 or 3" pieces left over, I could turn it into a pen or something for you. I'd love to try turning that stuff!
