Title: my youngest daughter's making her first bow
Post by: Josh B on January 28, 2016, 12:12:11 am
I was in the shop this afternoon futzing around with this and that and my youngest daughter Moyra came out to see what I was up to.  She watched me for a bit and then asked if she can make a bow.  I've been hoping for that request from one of my kids for a very long time so I said sure!  I asked what kinda bow she'd like to make and she said "a Rich Bow".  Ok says I, now lets pick out the wood.  She picked out a 50" tree of heaven stave.  I bandsawed the front profile and rough thickness taper and showed her how to use the draw knife to remove the bark.  She did a good job on that so I showed her how to clean off the remaining cambium with the scraper.  She cleaned it right up. Next I showed her how to clean up the edges with the surform and round off the edges with a fine cut rasp.  Took her a bit, but she got it lookin pretty good.  That was as far as we got before Momma rang the supper bell.  Hopefully she'll stay interested long enough to finish it.  Here she is working on the cambium.  Josh

That is too cool Josh. Can't wait for my little man Henry to ask that question.  He helped me on his bow in the fall.  That was pretty special. Can't imagine what it's like. Keep us posted

This is the good stuff Brother!  Bottle that up and keep it in your mind and heart forever.  One day, likely when she's doing the teenage terribleness, you'll need to pull these memories out and savor them a bit.

My daughter was just a bit older than yours when she took the notion to build a bow with me.  It's still incomplete, and honestly it's pretty poorly made and has only ever shot a couple dozen arrows.  But I wouldn't trade that chunk of wood or the time I spent with her building it for all of the best bows ever posted on this site.  She turns 25 in a couple days...

The fact that she asked is the best part.  Look forward to watching her progress.

That's awesome Josh... My youngest said she would like to build a bow sometime but always busy she turns 21 in May.. I think you meet her at the classic the year Turtle made you a bow in the bow trade.

That's awesome!  It's good to hear she showed the interest.

My oldest niece has taken interest in archery... Maybe I can convince my sister to let us build a bow together (even if it's an oak board... it would still be more fun than just buying one).

Thanks for all the nice comments fellas!  Any time with my kids is special, but time in the shop with one of em that's eager to learn...well that's icing on the cake!  Hopefully we'll get a little more time in the shop this weekend.
Pappy-compared to my shop your shop is absolutely pristine!
Otter- its hard to imagine your daughter turning 21!  Time sure flies.
Thanks again fellas.  I'll keep y'all posted on the progress.  Josh

We got a little more time this evening to piddle around in the shop.  Moyra worked on getting to floor tiller and struggles with the farrier rasp, but she's getting more familiar with it as she works.  The rasp just requires a little more muscle than the average 10 yr old girl has to use.  She took right to the scraper though.  She's got it close to floor tiller and even managed to keep the side to side thickness pretty even.  I helped point out where she needed to remove wood of course, but she has been applying the elbow grease and asking good questions.  When we called it quits in the shop tonight, she was pretty much to the point where we need to cut string nocks.  Not to shabby for her first build so far.  Josh

In order to be ready for the next time I get home, we decided to have her string made and ready to go.  Now Moyra is quite accomplished at making cordage, but this is her first actual bowstring.  We used fast flight and made a single loop Flemish string.  Again, I provided instructions, she provided all the labor.  I snapped a few of her as she worked.  Josh

Her hands move so quick that it's hard to get a clear pic.  Here she is pulling out a few strands at a time to make a nice tapered bundle on her string.  And here is the end result...a perfect tapered bundle single loop Flemish twist string.  All that is needed to finish this string is serving.  Thanks for following along so far.  We'll get back on it as soon as I get back home again.  Josh
