It's been so long since I have finished/posted a bow that I thought I'd get this one up on the forum despite the artwork making it questionably primitive. Due to work I just haven't had the time to do much bowyering and I have been disappointed with the couple I have tried. This bow took over four months to complete; half an hour here, half an hour there and now it's finally done.
66" T2T
Rawhide backed maple with purple heart belly and bocote accent woods.

More pics, art closeup

I like the bold "no holding back design" very well done, B
-
The "Belly" of the bow is nice.
-
Very cool, I really like that tiller shape.
-
That's awesome! The tiller is great and I like the artwork. You're certainly not going to bump into someone at the range with the same bow as you. 8)
-
Not sure which side is the prettiest. Would love to see it up close!
-
Very nice APH, I'd call that museum camo.
-
Nice aph, art work has a oriental feel to it i like it
-
Sweet bend and mighty funky.

Wow that breaks the mould!, a nice bow and personally speaking I like the artwork , very nicely done 8) good fun, :)
(It would make getting shot by it almost a happy experience :D)

Tiller is good, and you have chosen a really good design for a hefty draw purpleheart.
I really like what you have done with the purpleheart/bocote combo. It suits the design and really lets the wood show it's natural beauty. Not sure about the artwork though. I can appreciate the time and effort you put into it, and I'm sure that wide expanse of rawhide was just begging to have something painted on it.
I find it interesting as graphic design in a print or hanging on a wall, but a bit too busy and colourful for my personal taste on a bow. I'm sure many others will disagree and that is fine. I certainly commend you for doing something different to what everyone else is doing. Looking forward to see what you do with the next one.

Very nice hefty bow.Seems like finish work is something some people enjoy more than others.Unique.Like your choices of wood and your tiller looks spot on.
-
Great looking bow, different but still very nice. :)

So, I like the art, but the tiller is what I think is the prettiest!
-
Thanks all!!! I figured the art would be outside the realm of what we do on this forum but I am very grateful from those who, even though the art may not be what they would want on a bow, were still able to find such supportive and positive things to say. This forum is the best!
The whole art thing started as my wanting to tattoo or "sleeve" the rawhide on one of my bows. I am going to be playing with this idea for a while so I hope you guys will endure some more... if I can scrape up the time to get them done :).

Hey Mike, go tribal tat on the next one
-
Keep 're coming!
-
Wow lots of work in that one! the tiller looks great, nice work
-
Very well made!
-
Well That's a real sweetheart of a bow. Love everything about it. Very nice!
-
The art/finish work is exceptional. The tiller looks a bit off on the lower limb though. Maybe it's just me since no one else seemed to notice. She's a beauty nonetheless! Josh
-
If Jimmy Hendrix shot bows, I think this one would be right up his alley. Seems psychedelic to me. Very cool and unique for sure.

To my eyes, the lower limb in the middle third it appears ever so slightly stiffer. I think the paint on the back was just a bit thicker there... :)
Pretty bow sir. I wish I had such talent. The kewl thing is that the wood working craftsmanship on the belly is not out paced by the over the top artwork on the back.
By looking at the back, I'm assuming this bow is intended for the range and not the woods, ...but who uses a 72 pound draw weight for target shooting??? :o :o :o

Lol! I hear ya Eric. It is slight, but what I'm seeing is the inner 8 inches or so of the bottom limb looks just a bit stiff. Like I said it could just be that my tiller eye is out of calibration. The paint scheme looks like my favorite Hawaiian shirt from high school. Beautifully done. Josh

Cool...just cool!

@Onebowonder: I tend to hunt in areas where there are many, many wildflowers that bloom in only bright, and often neon colors, so the bow should blend right in. It is my favorite place to hunt as many things can be enjoyed by just watching nature in this area. There has been the occasional pixie sighting at the base of the big rock candy mountain, which is the largest geographical landmark used as a locating point on my GPS, and there is currently no bag limit on the saber-toothed jakalopes this year. Definitely a target rich environment for the bowhunter who can properly conceal himself. Oh! By the way, the camouflage of choice is tie-dye if you'd like to join me in the future. :)
-
Mike I was in Vegas a couple months ago. By your description, I think that I might of wandered through your hunting area. I didn't realize that you could hunt in the casino lobby. :o >:D Josh

Just try not to get all whacked out and light it on fire.
I think that's awesome. Wish I had a drop of your artistic talent. Very cool, and as everyone has said, great tiller.
Purple Heart huh? Looks like a bow wood to me.
-
I love it! And if you want to blend in with a bunch of drunken teenagers, there's nothing better!
-
Once again, beautiful bow.
Just out of curiosity, I'm in the process of trying to validate some bow mathematics, and my math shows that for a 66" tip to tip purpleheart bow, (64" ntn) it should have ended up in the ballpark of 0.44" thick and 2.55" wide. Did your bow end up anywhere near those numbers?
-
You need to intergreate a como pattern in you painting.
Nice bow, looks good. I would'nt pay it no mine to what people think primitive is..
It is what it is.
-
@Wooden Spring:The 2.55" wide measurement is practically "spot on" as the bow is 2.5" at the base of the pyramid. I'm not sure of the thickness at the moment but, given how close the other measurement came in, I would guess that t is probably pretty darn close. I'll check after work and message you tonight/tomorrow.

Awesome! Thanks for the response. I'm trying to vet the formulas given in the book "Archery: The Technical Side," and it's cool to see that they actually do work!

im a little older, i like it its " far out" and "groovy" :)
-
Great job! looks pretty darn original, I dig the modern art job
-
I have to admit the pattern is starting to grow on me.
-
That is totally wild man! And a fantastically well crafted bow to boot! :-)
-
The first thing I thought of was you musta been trippin on A. I love the pyramid look and the artwork is exceptional. I really admire guys that can do that kind of stuff. Im only good with stick figures, lol. The belly is beautiful in a very simple way. Danny

Thank you again to everyone for the great comments!!!
Ok, my new goal in life is to get Tommy Chong to pose for a picture with the bow. Anyone able to hook me up?
-
Hey Mike, I just saw you shoot this one on you tube. I must say I have become a massive fan of your bows and your vid's. Highly entertaining and informative. You have been making some really nice shooters. A very positive, no holds barred depiction of bowmaking. You are a credit to the bowyer community.
Really like how you put your own stamp of individuality on what you create. I'm happy to admit my initial read of the artwork was wrong.
Hamish.

I to really enjoy your YouTube channel!
This particular bow is beautiful! Your craftsmanship and personal touch really shines. I have to say that the artwork is a little more modern than we normally see here on pa. But the execution of the design is stunning! The artwork is not something I would do or even attempt. But if I seen you with this bow at the range I would be dying to shoot it and ooo and awh over your talent. Thanks for sharing can't wait to see the next one!
