Title: Twins, Osage and Yew flatbows both 68” and 57# @ 30”
Post by: Carson (CMB) on December 05, 2015, 02:26:26 am
Twins, Osage and Yew flatbows both 68” and 57# @ 30”
I had a request to make two bows, one yew and one of osage, both in a similar longbow design. The goal was to get them both in the 55-60# range @ 30” in a 68” package.  The nature of this task challenged me as a bowyer, but I feel like I hit the mark. Both are in a pyramid limb flatbow design with a little overall reflex and flip of the tips. Of course, the osage held all of the flip, while the yew pulled out a little. This is a design that I really like for a hunting bow.
Both shoot very nicely. I have a hard time drawing to a full thirty inches, I am almost to 29” on the full draw pics. I also made up 2 dozen douglas-fir arrows to go with the bows (65-70# spine, 31” BOP), which fly very cleanly out of both bows.
The pin nocks are tiny. The handle is rawhide lace, bordered by a silk thread wrap. Finished with my own version of a French polish.

Osage

Those turned out sweet! That is a cool and challenging project to make sister bows like that from different species. Looks like you nailed it.

I really like that grain coming out of the yew bow's handle.

Very nice set of bows Carson, the full draw profiles are matched so well that I can't distinguish one from the other. Way to deliver the goods man.  :)

Here are the only pictures I got of them side by side. A shame really, considering all of the work to make them matched.

Beautiful.  Ideal in every way.   I agree about the overlays.  That project would have taken me 6 months.

It took me 14 months :)... about 10 of those were mental preparation months.

More and more, I like a good self nock.

I have to give credit to Aaron H (Falcon) for the inspiration on the pin nocks. I had simple little pin nocks and couldnt see a way to make them look a little fancier while keeping them simple and functional. Then I saw his osage pin nocks in PA magazine on his July self Bow of the Month. Thanks Aaron.  :)

Thanks for all of the very nice comments gentlemen. It really is a great feeling to get the nod of approval from bowyers I have long admired.
