Title: Knife handles
Post by: DC on October 28, 2015, 01:13:10 pm
Why don't I ever see leather handles on here? When I was a young buck that's about all you could buy. I made a half dozen knives and put leather handles on all of them, seemed to work well.

Do you mean the leather rings?
Do you have photos?
Can you tell us how you made them.
I remember the rings when I was a teen.

No photos, way to long ago. You made a whole bunch of leather washers. The knife had a round handle portion that was threaded on the end. You slid a piece of brass on and then followed it with a leather washer, then glue, another washer, you see where I'm going.  Then you put an aluminum block on and a countersunk nut. Tighten it up and let the glue dry. Grind it to shape and buff it up. I'll see if I can find a picture on the net.

I've made a couple like that. Brother Dan and Otis have them. All I did was cut pieces of leather and pressed them on the handle and soaked them in Super Glue. Then sanded and shaped them with a belt sander.

How do they handle the elements? I know Estwing still offers tools with them.

I never had any problem. I Varathaned them. I think they would be bulletproof soaked in CA.
