Is Red Oak a good candidate for belly tempering ?

How about Vine Maple ?

Thanks

It's not a good candidate but I seem to remember you doing it successfully anyway.

Vine maple is a great candidate for belly tempering. It is so strong in tension, it cant hurt to beef up the compression.

I don't have any experience with red oak.

I don't remember making a tempered red oak,I know I made a bamboo backed red oak,...but who knows  ;D ;D ;D

Ok than, I'll temper the Vine maple as I try to deflex the limbs and leave the Red Oak alone  ;D

Vine maple is a good candidate for belly tempering unless it already has a lot of reflex - then I do not recommend it.

Gordon, I need to deflex that Vine Maple significantly before I even attempt tillering  ;) ;) ;)

That's it. I remember it having a fancy fabric backing.

Manny, check out my vine maple build-a-long. I show some techniques for dealing with highly reflexed vine maple.

 ;D ;D ;D Yeah Gordon, I checked that Thread, several times  ;D ;D

I'm afraid tho that my Bowyering skills aren't anywhere near as sharp as Yours,
and I need all the help I can get,
If I cannot deflex the stave with heat than I'll have to do the crazy tillering  ;D

I used to intentionally reflex wood with dry heat by as much as 10" and more.  Tillering was interesting but far from impossible
