Title: 2015 Western WA, little Muzzy bull.
Post by: Ed Brooks on October 16, 2015, 12:53:31 pm
Not a big bull but he did fit nicely in my freezer ;D. My son(son's 3rd yr elk hunting) and I got to do the shooting on this bull, he was with a spike we was in a 3pt min area or would have tagged out. after the shooting the spike ended up walking back out of the timber in front of my son at about 10 feet and with head turned he never knew my son was there( son was flat footed in the open). Made my day to see the smile on his face after getting to get so close to one of them big critters. Ed

I have heard some folks with a pile of elk experience tell me that once you are close to a bull, there comes a point that they almost are stupid about ignoring something out of the ordinary.  At 50 yds, they'd panic at the sight of someone standing in the open, but at 15 yds you are just part of the living room furniture!

One old timer explained it to me this way: Elk have a comfort zone and it is generally established by the cows of the herd.  Anything outside of that boundary is considered a danger, but once it is inside the boundary it will be ignored because to get into the herd you must obviously be one of the herd.

I still think if I had been your son even with just a lowly spike bull at 10 yds, I would still have badly offended that bull's sense of smell.

Very COOL Ed!
That gun looks familiar to me too, I've owned a TC Hawken for quite a few years, love that gun.Never shot an elk with it though.

Thank you guys for looking and all the kind word. this bull still had fat on his back, (not the norm for elk here) really good eating bull. The old Hawken has been a very good rifle for me, it has put a lot of meat in the pot.
We'll be after them again for Turkey Day. Archery Deer starts the same time so I'll be doing a little of both next month with my son. JW, I have seen elk do strange things. From busting at 50 yrds from a snapped twig or lay in their bed and let ya walk into their bedroom and catch the herd bedded at 10yrds. all because the calves were up playing making noise. The time you think you can guess what they will do they do the opposite, I guess thats part of the call for me any way, to hunt them.  Ed
