Title: Tiller Help / Alleviate my stress
Post by: JRMakowski on September 17, 2015, 01:20:31 pm
Well here goes, I can see right limb looks a little stiff compared to left (i think pic exaggerates it a bit) Im currently around 60 lbs at 26" on a short tillering para cord string I want to cut an arrow rest and didn't know if that weakens the top limb at all? I havent braced it yet either, So far just around 5/8" set has taken in and it pretty even on both limbs within a 16th" I also tried to make handle less of a sharp transition might need to do more. Well any advice appreciated ,  Josh

Stay away from inner thirds for now. Too much bend there compared to the rest of limb.

Good place to start, but both limbs are stiff in the middle. When you tiller a bow, get the middle of the limb bending first, then nearest the handle, and lastly at the tips. Getting a bow to bend too much near the handle too soon will lead to string follow.

The tips are coming back far enough to get it braced.
The long string will deceive you if you leave it on too long.

Like Del said, get her braced. A low brace of about 3" or 4" is all you need, plus at low brace you can see how the string tracks.

First of all ty all for the replies  :) For bracing the bow do i use my normal string i made my bow is 70.5 NTN I have a 67.5" string, But i can make a longer one if needed, Also does cutting an arrow rest weaken the tiller on top limb at all?

Well braced bow and it was a mess! :o :-\ >:(  ty for recommending this Im pretty sure if i had kept going my bow would have been junked.) I cant seen to keep the string in the grooves, I believe its because one limb was so much stiffer then the other, my bow literally had one curved limb one limb that was almost straight I came to find my tillering tree is junk I un braced it and made a makeshift tillering stick and it looked the same as the whompy brace so I scraped for few hours and got it a little closer (pic Below) I decided to glue my Bocote tips on in hopes it will help keep string on also and will continue tillering as soon as tips dry. Not looking bad, but I think it may be bending a bit too much at the fades still. I would work about 5" after the fades down to the tips if I were you, but it's hard to tell with the sideways picture.

Yeah I see it on the left limb too.

Ohhh, I didn't see it was a reflex delfex. I never know the correct way to tiller these things out...

Actually I've found following Halfeye's advice to get the tips coming around first has much improved my tillering technique...
