Title: American flatbow with Viking art
Post by: Academonicon on September 15, 2015, 10:39:12 pm
I'm really excited about this bow!  Apart from being my second bow made from a raw osage stave, it's also my first shortbow, my first real bending-handle, and super pretty to boot!  It's a super sweet shooter, though the handle's a little broad and I needed to learn to compensate in terms of the aim.

Specs:
Osage wood "Plains Indian" style* flatbow
50" notch-to-notch
approximately 45# @ 28"
Bendy handle, built up with cork and a leather arrow-shelf, wrapped with brown leather cord
Urnes (late Viking era) wolf designs painted with black gouache, coated with one layer of Rustoleum crystal clear enamel over the designs, and two coats of Min-wax tung oil

*The term "Plains Indian style" has come to indicate bows that look like this one, though I imagine that there's a much greater variety of styles and materials than the single moniker implies.

Beautiful bend and I'd say you got all the energy from that bow. Nice work...but it looks like you cut the back ring at the nocks. As stressed as this bow is I'd be worried about that.

Sweet bend. I like the look of that tiller. She sure likes to arch doesn't she. You can still rework the a little handle if need be. If you need to stiffen it up after narrowing, glue a few thin strips on the belly side. Just make sure they're fairly thin 1/16" - 1/8" or they may pop off when it bends.

If I tried that anchor point you've got my draw would be 31" or so. I adopted the side of the nose to keep my arrows shorter. I may have to try along side of the eye like that. My long draw anchor is/was the corner of my mouth(old wheelie bow habit  :-*). I tend to sight down the arrow now a days.

Pat: I hadn't thought about that, but it makes sense.  I actually left the tips a little deeper so that they'd stay stiff, so hopefully the violated back ring won't be an issue.

You don't need a bow if you can shoot arrows from your eyes!  ;D

Very nice, I like it a lot!  8)
