I don't know if I'm dreaming or not but my friend texted me saying he found an amazing Osage and ya I agree. It's on a hillside behind his house where it's like the last place you'd think to find osage

Sweet find, but that looks a bit like a poison ivy vine climbing that trunk - hard to see exactly - but be careful what you hug!

Good reason right there to not be a tree hugger.

Well dang I didn't think of that. Won't be the fist time I got poison ivy from a vine on a tree.

That's a good looking tree.  Judging by the bark I'd bet it has good rings inside.  Post some pictures after you get it cut and split.

I don't know Clint....if it is in the woods it might have some tight rings due the tree canopy........either way it could make some great bows...

Couldn't get it down today because I only have my bow saw and this sucker won't come down. I'm afraid it's gonna spit as it falls. The rings are perfect though I got a glimpse of them.

Be careful.....cutting trees in the woods can be dangerous,  they can hang up in the canopy tops and be tough to get on the ground.

Very nice looking tree,I would notch it good on the fall side ,that should help it from splitting  up the middle when you drop it. Of course it needs to be split anyway. ;) :)

Little bit showing up on my arm. I plan on finishing cutting the tree today after my soccer game. Hopefully that thing will come down.

Cut a kerf or a wedge out on the side you want it to fall towards. Then make your felling cut opposite of that just below your kerf. It will fall perfectly and not split. Watch out and stand to the side, trees can kick backwards when the come down and really knock the ever loving schit out of you. You can die or worse.

I got a decent wedge cut but it's hard to cut it with a bow saw that doesn't cut straight. I'm gonna find out tonight if I can get it down.

Yeah, getting a tree that size down with a bow saw is hard work! I remember two years ago I was trying to cut a 12in diameter elm and my little 12 year old self found it near impossible to get down! I eventually rocked and pushed the thing to the point where I could finally fell it but man it was hard work. After that I threw my hands in the air and swore id only make sapling bows from Then on ;)

I know everything about it is perfect. Just a lucky find there's not any other Osage nearby except down in a creek and a couple in the side of the road.

That's a very nice tree.  Make sure to seal the ends.  If you could find someone with a chainsaw that would make it a lot easier for you.  When I have trees hang up like that I carefully cut the bottom section to stave length and let the rest fall down some more.

I have a chainsaw but it's my dad's and I've never really used it before.

%95 percent of all my bows come from tress less than 5 inches in diameter and for those I use a Corona Razortooth Saw, the thing eats through wood faster than any bow saw and is small enough to fit in your pocket. I highly recommend it for any tree up too about 5 inches in diameter. So if your into sapling bows it makes the cutting job so much easier.

If you did get poison ivy, I have found something that works great for me... orders of magnitude better than just calamine lotion.  Try Tecnu Extreme... I find it usually on the same shelf as the pink calamine stuff at the drug store, or even sometimes in the pharmacy section of a grocery store.  I scrub the area as soon as I feel a hint of itchy, and it has worked wonders for me.  Of course the best is to learn to recognize the leaves/vines and stay away...

Nice find on the tree, and good luck on turning it into some bows!

That makes it sound like you are taking wood from land you don't have permission to cut on.

Tell me it isn't so.........

Well..... lets just say... I have done some midnight pruning also. But for the record,  always best to ask. Especially if its sn entire tree lol!  Dont get in the habit of doing that, not saying you did, just... be careful.

I don't know who's land it is there's nobody near by so I can't really ask anybody. There is a road at the bottom of the hill that people walk on though.

Beautiful tree good for you. Always get permission on private property.  I'd never, ever cross someone's posters and go on their private land and take a tree as I'm sure you'd never do either, but if a tree like that was in an area like a RR Right of way (far enough from tracks anyway) within high water mark of navigabe river, on edge of old strip mine land etc land that you'd never be able to ask anyone well that's different in my eyes. I'm sure this situation your in is similar.  Be careful. Nice tree!

+1 what Pat said.  You can find out tax information online most of the time, almost all counties in the US use an online GIS system these days.  I use them all the time - just go to Google and search for <your county and state> GIS online.  Then you can use the system to find out who owns the property and give them a call.

Being an honest guy, I always get permission to cut. Quite often the lands owner is overjoyed that you would ask permission rather than steal the wood he will give you permission to cut on other property. I have never been turned down when I asked to cut osage, I always show the land owner a bow I made and have distributed more then one "thank-you" bows for for wood.

What Eric said to the t.  A judge might have you flipping burgers or what ever for a long time to pay replacement cost for a osage tree. Not worth it.  Best of luck to you young man. There are some old people on here that have been down such roads.   :-[ Arvin

I messaged him this info as well. Most all of the deeds in Utah are online now. They have an interactive map, click on the parcel on the map, and it gives you the owners address. Sometimes it takes some more digging to find a number, but chances are someone you know, knows the owner.

My friend hunts up in the woods where this  tree is. Actually he was setting up a blind when he saw it so I guess he has some kind of permission to be on the land.

In my book if it's a place where you can hunt then you can cut a tree or two as long as it's not some tree with serious commercial value.

My thoughts exactly Eric.....Integrity will get you there.

I have to disagree B&A ....I have property and let people hunt and if they cut one of my trees without permission I would have an issue......All you have to do is ask.....

Ryan C ...IMHO I think you should ask.....the Mo-Jo would defiantly be better.........I would have a hard time making a bow out of that stave if you gave it to me... :(

Trees are expensive, Look to see what the cost of a mature tree is to buy, then ask how you would feel if someone that knew someone that had permission to hunt, cut a tree down. I would be hot, and I would seek to make an example of that type of person.
Title: Re: Best Osage I've ever seen
Post by: lebhuntfish on September 02, 2015, 12:12:45 pm
This is very true, if I have permission to hunt I even ask if I can hang a tree stand. And then ask if it's even ok to do a little pruning so I can see and shoot cleaner. I've been told no. I then explained that the pruning was so I could make a clean quick kill so the animal wouldn't suffer. I was then told to prune all I want. I can now cut Osage, hickory, elm and white oak on his property when I find it. Patrick

I have never cut a tree on anyones property but ones where I have permission to. And would never cut a tree on property I know that is owned by a person that would not want tress cut or property with posted signs. I was trying to say that if you have permission to hang stands and set up blinds and shooting lanes then a sapling or two I think will not hurt (as long as the owner isnt a bowmaker). I dont go around and whack down mature trees ever, even on property I have been given the "cut all you want" on, I feel as though a tree larger than 4-5in in diameter is too much.

Yep, just because no one is near don't mean it don't belong to someone. :) You are right Arvin, we old codgers do like to be ask. :) I try and be pretty charitably when ask, not so nice when not ask. :) Character is doing the right thing when no one can see.  ;) :) Still a very nice tree ,be careful getting in un hung, I do like Clint when that happens, I first cut a little across the top and then under cut it and let it come down, if you don't cut across the top of the log it is likely to split up it when you under cut, then repeat until I can get it where I can handle it. :)
