Well fellas I haven't posted a bow in quite a while. In fact I was a little reluctant to post this one as well because it is my trade bow for the 2015 bow trade. But this bow is the absolute best bow I've built to date. Here's the story.
This particular piece of Osage is from the very first Osage I ever cut for staves. Last year I attempted to mentor a young man I worked with. He came to my house and picked out this stave. I helped him down to the point of about 30in of a ring being chased. We sealed the back and stood it in the corner for his next session. Several months went by and almost every weekend I offered him to come over and work on his stave. He always said oh yeah I'll come by for a while. He never did, finally one day at work he told me that he just decided to buy a FG bow and that if I wanted to use his stave to go ahead. I said, well let me know if you change your mind.
When I got my victims name for the bow trade I started looking at staves to build a deflex/reflex bow. I kept looking at this stave with a partially chased ring. So I called my buddy and he said to go ahead he wasn't going to build one. So I picked it up and chased the next ring down myself. This thing is as clean of a stave I ever worked. But it grew a little wonky. I decided that a full bend and a good heat treat on my new caul would be what it got. So after floor tiller I spent a week every night after work with a heat gun and some Osage. After the second session I noticed some prop twist. So the third night I took out as much as I could. The fourth night was string alignment, it was pretty straight forward, a little kick to one side and it was good. The fifth night was a long one. I done a full heat treat of the stave and clamped it in my caul over night. When I got up Saturday morning I took the clamps off. The stave did not spring back at all. I now had a beautiful deflex/reflex bow stave. Then came tillering, I had a new tillering design put together and this was the first one I tillered on it. The mid limbs wanted to fight me a bit but they finally came around. I was out to about 55 at 23 when mojam came around. I thought, I will finish it up there. We'll that didn't happen. But I did get some professional eyes on it and I was humbled by their encouragement and comments. The tip overlays was put on this week, dvshunter used my bow in an overly demonstration. He glued on the top overlay and partially shaped it. I finished it and glued up the bottom one. I did get it to 55 at 26 and put a few arrows through it. Upon the first release, I knew I had something special. After mojam, Onebowwonder asked me to come over to his house and work on some bows for a day. I managed to get it to its final draw specs. Ok now it's time to shoot. It had so much power in the limbs I couldn't string it by hand. I had to use a stringer. I shot the first arrow at full draw and I was so giddy I almost couldn't shoot the second. Anyway we shot a bunch of arrows and took lots of pictures. The rest is in the stats.
Unbacked Osage self bow
Deflex/reflex design
64 ntn 55lbs at 28in
1/1/2 wide to mid limb then a slow taper to 3/8in tips.
Tips are, top white striped ebony, black ebony, a dark red colored wood, white stripe, black ebony. The bottom is the same without the top white stripe ebony on top.
The back is dyed with oxblood leather dye diluted with denatured alcohol and a little mineral spirits.
The leather wrap is buck skin dyed with oxblood dye. With silk thread holding a wind indicator feather mad of a very small primary turkey feather, a small tail feather cut down and a little buck tail all types up in my fly vise.
The Indian symbols are a lightening bolt for speed, a deer track for plentiful game and a thunderbird track for bright prospects. I hope you enjoy this half as much as I did. And I hope my victim makes meat with this one this fall. This bow was also #30 for me. Patrick

I hope you all enjoyed the progress photos. My guy should receive fury tomorrow. I will miss this on dearly. Thanks for looking, Patrick
-
Wowzers that is a sweet bow. Your guy is gonna be drooling.
-
Trust me, it shoots as good as it looks. I am so envious of ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? right now, its not even funny!
-
Extremely nice!
-
Dang, that is one sweet bow and ridiculously fast.
Grady
-
Well done pat. That one is definitely your best bow to date. I like everything but the top tip. It looks like it was glued on wrong
-
I loved shooting this bow. My piddly little 25 - 26 inch draw didn't quite get all this bow has to offer, but trust me, it was plenty!!! The arrows I shot through it weren't exactly the right spine for the bow, but they grouped up nicely each time none-the-less.
Shoots fast - barely any motion in the handle on release - and since Patrick added those string silencers, it's deadly quite.
It's also kinda pretty... X@)IjS}]{/> is a lucky duck!

Very very nice job - love it :)
-
Thanks everyone so much! I wouldn't be were I am today if it wasn't for PA! I've learned so much from all of you! So I guess this bow is a tribute to all of my PA family.
Dave, thank you! I wouldn't know about the heat top tips. I think some bearded fella at mojam glued it on.
Onebow, jo5h, sleek, Knoll, dvshunter, and johnW. I'm glad I got a chance to share it with you guy's! Patrick
-
Where did u get a deer horn?!? >:D
Looks sweet man. Can't wait till it shows up
-
looks great, love that handle.
-
That looked like a tough piece of wood to tame, Patrick, and you really tamed it. Good job on a pretty bow.

Perhaps the same place you got your bow? ;)
-
Wow, that's some nice work Patrick! Love the curves and finish work and that's some jaw dropping speed. You gotta find another stave like that and make one for yourself, now.
The picture of the arrow in flight is beyond cool, too.
-

Thanks mullet! This is one of those lighter color yellow Osage staves. They always seems to bend well as are a little easier on you with hand tools. The lighter stuff is now my favorite. But this one just wanted to corporate and seamed to like being a bow. Patrick

One day while driving down the road a big buck flagged me down and asked if I would cut off his antlers. He said that he didn't need them any more and I could us them to make arrow shelves. As long as it was only on Osage! >:D Patrick
-
sweet looking bow and very quick rated 1 IPS slower than my first compound @ 60# boy that has been a few moons ago. :o Hands down my favorite bow desighn and I like it tip to tip.
-
I just realized I have a 10 yr old Osage stave that has a handle just like that. Now I have a good idea how to mess it up ;)
-
Patrick, i dont mine sayin thats one of the finest bows i've seen in good while. Congrats on some well paid hard work. If you havent shipped yet you can go ahead and address that to me in michigan.😉
-
Looks grand, and those curves are sweet.
-
super nice bow, Boy love the last 3 pix the one at brace super cool. Chuck
-
Well done on that bow and excellent performance
-
Thank you all so much for your time and kind words! It means a lot to me! Patrick
-
Nice job on taming that stave!
-
My computer is acting funny and I had to keep coming back to this post a few times over the last few hours to get all the pictures to show. Now that I'm able to see them all I gotta say that is one nice bow Patrick.
Tricky looking stave with those limbs coming out of the handle at different angles. You turned out a killer bow from that piece of osage and the arrow speed is amazing to boot. Nice!
-
Very beautiful bow.
-
WOW! Very nice.
Congrats to you and the person you made for.

Thanks Greg for taking the time to keep going back and looking at my post. It was a bit of a trick to tiller until I took a rag and draped it over the handle section. Then all I could see was the limbs. The hardest part was trying to make the bottom limb the "bottom" limb. With the shape of the handle, there was only one way to position the limbs.
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it! Patrick
-
So, whens it get to my house Pat?
-
Great job on that bow!
-
You sure did a good job finishing that one up Patrick. Something to be proud of.

Thanks John, and thanks for your advice at mojam as well! I'm very proud of this one.
Thanks Clint!
Patrick
-
Super, super craftsmanship, Pat. Performance speaks for itself. Glad I had opp to shoot it. Looking forward to your next project.
-
Thanks Mike! That means a lot buddy! Patrick
-
Great work. Those chrono numbers are pretty sweet. Looked like a tricky stave.
-
Thanks Matt! Patrick
-
That's a beauty in all aspects, very nice work. :)
Pappy
-
Nice work on that one Patrick
-
I like the back story, and well told. :)
That was one heck of a stave, but you certainly did it justice.
Beautiful bow, and fast (couldn't you get that last 1 fps ? >:D )
A great tale of perseverance with a happy ending....
The guy who walked away and bought an FG bow was a fool... but I guess not everyone gets bitten by the bug.
Del
-
Awesome bow Patrick, that one really turned out nice. Cool R/D caul as well, I like how it is adjustable.
-
Great bow, well done, super fast........................and a beauty!
Slightly deflexed, long recurves, this design rules!
Michael
-
Wow she is a beuty . Hope that one shows up at my place. Nice work
-
Thanks a bunch fellas!
Del, I wanted another chance at the chronograph right as soon as I strung it up. But I don't like to shoot my bows that way. I bet with a little practice with the release and it will break the 200 mark. I guess I could have used a kids arrow! >:D
Thanks Falcon, I had that caul at mojam!
Hawk, it's the first of its design for me.
Bob, the way this bow trade is going, heck it may even get shipped back to me. Patrick
-
Beautiful bow!!
-
Great job! That was a tough stave, too!
-
Thanks fellas!
By the way the new owner should have "The Fury" on his door step! Patrick

That bow is a screamer!! Why don't you flight shoot it just for the heck of it with a 500 grain or close arrow.
-
great bow with top speed
I have built some with this design, I like the side profile unbraced - like an eagle in the sky ...
Top notch all around, Patrick

Well, he was only a slight slip of the finger tips from flight shooting it in my yard the other day whilst we were taking pictures of it. ...but as I live in town, I expect one or another of my neighbors might have objected to the landing spot such and effort might have acquired! Hopefully the new owner has a proper locale for doing a bit of flight shooting with it, ...'cause I bet it'd do a dandy job of it!

Yeah Eric, if I remember right, we discussed the people on the interstate may disapprove of an arrow landing in their cars. Patrick

Really impressed with the performance on that bow, how much of the original profile did it maintain before and after tillering?

I just got home from work . And had the fury waiting on me. Took me a while to get the bow unpacked it was like breaking into fort knox. But I got more gold out of the pvc tube than fort knox has . Wow what a work of art patrick. This bow is drop dead gorgeous. I am beside myself receiving this bow.
Well I guess I don't need to post any pictures patrick already took care of that. I can't thank you enough patrick. WOW is this bow stunning. I love the story that goes with the bow also. The rest of you can stop looking on your porch for this bow. I won the lottery today. Thanks again patrick. You really out did yourself wit this jewel.

Thanks for the super kind words Bob! I really don't know what to say. This is the first bow I ever shipped anyone. Sorry about all the packing I didn't want ANYTHING to happen to that bow!
I have to say this. I knew all the while I was making this bow that I had something special. And when I flung the first arrow I was sure I had made something amazingly special! I didn't want to boast but I was dying to do so. When I finally completed the finish work I took a little time to reflect. "I just made this" I told myself. I still can't believe it! I didn't want to send it out but I made a promise. I was going to make the best possible bow to the best of my ability and send it to Bob. That's what I did. I'm glad you like it bud. And I hope it puts meat on your table for you and your family! Patrick
-
And you did just that Patrick. It is the nicest bow and fastest bow I have ever had the pleasure to shoot. This baby will be seeing some no alot of the ohio woods this year and years to come.
Patrick put his all into this bow and man let me tell you it shows . I know it will make me strive all the harder on my bows from now on.

Thank you...
Patrick

Bob was so excited he sent me a text this AM... I know he's in love with this bow, no doubt...Congrats Bob and nice work Patrick, really nice... 8)

Yep, as early as MoJam it was obvious you and other experienced bowyers knew you had sumpin special. The great result was due to bit of luck in picking that particular chunk of wood, but is mostly due to your dedication & skill in bringing the hunk of wood to life. So go ahead & boast all ya want! ;)
-
Take it easy on the B.S.... I mean boasting. Last time you did that I clocked your B.S. at 199 fps....

Thanks a bunch Mike! It makes me feel good knowing that other, more experienced Bowyer's was admiring my work. Like I said before, I'm humbled by the response I have received about "The Fury" Patrick

Mine is faster nana nana boo-boo!

Only because I take time to actually breath!

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

Thanks arrowind! Patrick
-
Lovely curves has your Fury! Congratulations, a really nice bow (and performs incredibly).
-
Thanks man! Patrick

That's amazing. I have been wondering what kind of a radius you use to get that amount of recurve on the tips. It looks spot on.
-
That stave had a fine bow hiding in it and you sure found it. That is a sweet bend. Even from the pics you can tell that those limbs aren't over strained at all. I bet that bow stands the test of time. Great work.
-
Went over to bobs last night, and got to check this one out in person.
First lemme say great job patrick...its a fine bow. I think its safe to say its your best one yet. Its always fun watching someone come on here a complete noob, and watch there bowyering progress into what you made for Bob. Keep up the good work Patrick. :)
-
Yeah.... I agree, but Chris, the important question is, did you shoot it?

Well then id be lying >:D  but that doesnt mean i didnt think it shot good..it shot great. Just not the most amazing one ive ever shot ;) mind you ive shot a lot of bows made by lots of others, and my own. ;) heck..im not even sure i can tell you the most amazing one ive ever shot ???
-
Thanks a bunch fellas! So far this bow is the one I'm most proud of.
Chris thanks for your reply on here. I would really value your honest review of "The Fury".
I know Bob loves it and that's what my goal was. To make a bow that another bowyer would like and shoot. Patrick
-
My first reply says it all in all honesty patrick...my replies to sleek are in jest  selfbows dont get much better buddy ;)
Only thing different i found was its more than the weight ya stated is all...but that aint no thing, and has nothing to do with the fact its a nice bow...we scaled it at about 63...after pulling it back and shooting it i told bob its def over 60 for sure so we went and scaled it. 199 is still really good for a 63 pound bow with a 470 grain arrow buddy. As long as a bow pulls smooth to anchor, doesnt rattle the last of me teefers out, shoots hard and the arrow flies straight for a good bit before dropping im not too concerned with the whole fps, performance,n speed stuff. And this one ya made met all my cirteria with flying colors, and wood shoot it a bunch if it was mine. Which is saying something, cus im picky about what i shoot. And since im being honest the dyed color on the back didnt float my boat much...but that dont mean @$!#. Im a function first dude. And not everybody likes the same ice cream..im a vanilla guy ;)

Thanks you very much for your review. I didn't know I was that far off of the weight. I was thinking about that, I made the "toasted" early wood look on the belly with a torch. I done this after shooting it in and sanding. Then I put the finish on. I never put it back on the scale to check the weight. "toasting" the belly side might have re heat treated it. Not too sure. I have checked my scale several times to make sure it was on but I only had a 5lb weight to use. I will try to find something to weigh that's heavier. If the scale is off I will throw it away and get a new one.
About the dye job, that's the first time I ever tried anything like that and it came out ok from what I was thinking. But hey not everyone likes vanilla I cream as much as I do! Thanks again Chris, and I strive to be a better bowyer with every build. Patrick
-
Well let me tell you patrick I lIke the dye job myself. Heck patrick there is nothing I don't like about the bow. You out did yourself and to think it's going to get better with every bow you build. In my mind I am thinking how are you going to top the fury but I am sure your minds already thinking about the next build.
And it's a tad stiff but hey its a hunting bow. If the deer are standing just tight I may be able to fill all my tags with one shot from the fury. Thanks again patrick.
-
Thank you Bob! You are very welcome! I'm really glad you like it so much! It means a lot to me that you feel that way also! I hope the deer line up perfect for you. I would love to see some pictures of you and Fury with some fresh meat for the freezer! Patrick
Edit
By the way Vanilla ice cream is truly my favorite!

I know this is a really old post but I would like to bring it back to life.
Not for more "pats on the back" but to show the newer bunch of bowers what can be done. This was, to date, the most unruly stave I have ever worked.
This shows that even the wildest piece of wood can be made indo a bow.
I was told once by a wise man here on PA, "nobody told you that you couldn't and look what you did!" RIP Jawg...
Patrick
-
Yep remember that one, beautiful job and glad to see ya back !!! amazing what a guy can do with a nasty piece of wood if he will give it a try and lots of patience and TLC.
Pappy

Good to see you again on PA, Patrick. Thanks for bringing this build back so folks can see how an iffy stave can become a beautiful, well tillered bow. Hopefully this will give folks the courage to try a difficult stave they have been putting off. This post reminds me how great PA was back in 2015(Photobucket for gosh sake), how everyone was willing to share their knowledge and their experiences to help others become successful wood bow builders.
-
Thanks guys, you are right, definitely the good ol day of PA.
I've been lurking in the background for a while and decided that with all of the knowledge I have gained over the years, and with some age, that this new generation of bowyers could use some inspiration.
I know that if it wasn't for PA and bowyers like you guys and several others I wouldn't be the bowyer I am today. And maybe even the person I am.
I'm glad to be back and looking forward to seeing all of the newbies!

This bow is very nice indeed. well done. This was before my time on here on pa. glad you reposted this one. love the profile of this bow too. Ive got a stave that has a similar style waiting for it. this gives me some ideas and hope for it. thanks again.

Great to see you here Patrick.

Good to see you to BJ! I'm hoping to stay around for a while!
I know what you mean about the staves, I have worked a bunch of them like that one. But not quite as crooked! This is the reason my signature says what it says!

9 years later.....Damn man, when you said wait, you really meant to wait! I think the carrier pigeon got lost. Or did you send it via swallow? Must have been a European swallow. It would never make it. An African swallow maybe, but not a European swallow.
So, whens it get to my house Pat?
Just keep waiting my friend! >:D
You sure did a good job finishing that one up Patrick. Something to be proud of.
Thanks John, and thanks for your advice at mojam as well! I'm very proud of this one.
Thanks Clint!

I believe it was Hummingbird carrier service bud!
I think your nomadic type movement caused it to be delivered to the wrong address! 😂 😂 😂
