Title: Rabbit on the roof :o question for raptor guys
Post by: Ed Brooks on August 10, 2015, 11:23:20 am
This weekend I got my son up for a black powder shoot. It was about 8am when woke him up. it is getting day light about 6ish here. After getting up and coming out of his cave. he says to me there is a headless rabbit on the roof. After a second of letting that sink in. I told him one of our cats probably killed it, then we though maybe an eagle or other bird may have dropped it. However when he went out to get it, he found an ear bit off and a small piece of the skull. More like it was eating it up there. This part of my house is a small over hanging roof that has a full size knight light 8 feet above it. So this if full light 24-7. I guess my question is what do you think may be the late nite early morning visitor may be. and sorry no pictures but the head was gone chewed off. I think it had talon marks on the sides but i didn't get to see it until after my lab had grabbed it. Dropped by an eagle or a dinner plate for an owl? Ed

I'm thinking maybe a Barred Owl. They like bunnies.

Zuma: owl is one we was thinking also. not sure what kind tho.
Outlaw: never thought about the Cupacabra, had thought maybe bigfoot. LOL
I once found a 22 slug on my roof when I lived two doors down, but a bunny blows my mind. Maybe the 22 slug was from a earlier bunny hunt. IDK. Have a good one. Ed.

Reminds me of working on some slum lord
houses in Richmond VA.
There were always a few .25 .38 and some
.357 bullets up there that just landed on the roofs.
I think mostly from misses while target shooting at
the street lights. (Maybe owls) lol/

Any of the bigger owls, depending on where you live.  Thinking particularly of the great horned owls.  They seem to do well around human habitation and are known to favor rabbit, well...at least when skunk isn't available!  Barred and great grey owl would be the other two big enough and strong enough to lift a rabbit.

It was a Northwestern Yeti, they are very elusive and nocturnal but their typical feeding habits is to take their prey up on peoples roofs so they can see what may be approaching in case they have to make their escape before being seen.  It looks like someone spooked him while he was eating and he had to leave his prey behind and focus on getting away unseen.
