Title: Good looking basswood
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on August 05, 2015, 09:46:34 am
I cut this tree down 6-7 years ago, it was huge. The stump has been a plant stand since. I sliced a chunk off the side to make a hearth and drill the other day. Bet the pen and carving guys would like this stuff. It doesn't feel punky or soft to me.

Beautiful wood Chris,
I'd be careful what you make out of it, the spalting is caused by a fungus, I do not know a lot about it but I have used it in the turkey calls I make and have been warned by others that the fungus and the dust from sanding it can be toxic. I have never gotten sick from it but I'm careful not to inhale the dust.

Thanks for the info Kevin. Im hoping the dust is flammable and not toxic :)

Trust me on the wood dust thing. It will knock you square on your keister. Im on day three of recovery and missed two days of work. My head wants to explode, stuffy nose, runny nose, sore throat, cough, sneeze, headache, no energy, no fever but feel hot inside and restless sleep. Only alcohol seems to help and in large quantities. Get a dust mask.

The same alcohol that made you stand there and fill your sinuses with it? :)

I have used a dust mask for years.

No, I dont drink and touch tools at all. But admittedly it was dumb. I have never had a problem with many types of wood before. Then I sanded some wood thats either sapele or mahogany and I just hit the floor.

Some of the foreign woods become micro light dust more than heavy dust that settles, I think that might start the ball rolling.

In case anybody was wondering, the set made five smoking hot, giant embers right in a row. Then I drilled through my hearth and stopped for the night. Im tickled it worked so easily...........this time. It is softer and wears quicker than Tony's healthy basswood drill and hearth did.

I wasted all but one Scott. I was amazed at how quickly it made embers. Less than 20 seconds Id guess, I just couldn't stop making em'!

Is that an ERC kit you used? Nice work cave man!
