This past weekend at the Elm Hall shoot a bunch of us were allowed to cut elm on the property with the intentions of making a bow from it,and then donating it back to the club next year for there raffle table. Id like for all those participating to post there progress here(but its not obligatory). It wood be neat to see what everyones cooking, and whats becoming of everyones staves. And hopefully this will help generate interest for the raffle and club. A group of us went out to cut,and we were like a bunch of giddy school girls,or like kids in a candy store free to choose anything they want.
I found mine growing right next to a larger pine tree that caused it to grow straight up and clean clean. Paul and ryan took sections from further up from the trunk section i took. Waste not want not. I was able to split mine in half, and the bark peeled off easily. Here they are after i got home. I get two shots to get one right.

Depending on some variables i might try a his and hers combo? ???
Ok...now lets see and hear what everyone else is doing.... 8)

Those both look like fun chris. Very nice and clean. Can't wait tinsee what you come up with. :)
-
Very nice Chris, I got 1/2 of the one Matt cut,I got it roughed out last evening, it is also very clean and pretty straight with a little natural reflex. ;) This should be fun and hope it helps out the club a bit in the process. :)

bet this is gonna be lotsa fun reading!
-
Mine is just a 3" x 72" debarked pole for now, my bark was an absolute b**ch to get off. Ill leave it whole for at least a few months, then rip it in half, then rough out a half to dry for at least another few months. Not sure if I want to go for a his and her combo, or a dad and kid combo. How cool would it be to carry around a bow just like the ol' mans, only smaller.
-
Chris and Chris,
I kinda like the His and Hers idea...... :) ;)
Can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

Those are fine looking staves Chris. Yeah, looking forward to following this thread.
-
Welp...got one of mine cut out to parallel dimensions besides the handle thickness being a lil thicker...now its time to watch the grass grow and play the wait for it to dry game. ;)

We'll see bill...we'll see ;)
Thanks drewster ;)
-
Can't wait to get my stave but it needs to lose some weight no use paying to ship water
-
I got 2 out of my piece, an adult bow and a kids bow, I got them roughed in and clamped to a form to dry for a while so they don't warp. ;)
Pappy.
-
Ya Pappy , with Elm there aint no telling which way it will move as it drys
But you will soon find out
Have fun
-
I cut a few. The one that I shared with Pappy, bark peeled off like an onion. The other isn't going to come off as easy. Currently, they are leaned up in my shop. I'll get to reducing them after the GLLI shoot this weekend.
-
This is a fun idea, gonna enjoy watching this one.
-
I'm hoping to get to go to Elm Hall next year, ...but if I cannot, might there be a away to allow us to remotely purchase raffle tickets for the bows posted here for the event? ...or is it a must be present to win kinda thing? I expect the winner would have to pay for or arrange their own shipping if he/she were remote from Elm Hall.

Eric im sure we can make that work as the time gets closer to next years shoot. It wood be pretty simple for someone who wasnt going to be able to be there to have some tickets in the raffle boxes with there name on them. Just get ahold of someone thats for sure gonna be there and send them some money, and letting them know how many tickets you want, and how many tickets per item as you will be able to put in as many in a box as ya want. Maybe pearly or someone who is close to the club and for sure will be there can help ya out. Im to far away to be a reliable present person. So yeah...anyone who wont be able to make it can possibly put tickets in without being present im assuming.
I remember a couple years ago when cipriano won patb's bow at the Tennessee Classics raffle without being present...he sent money to scott. Scott and all of us were in disbelief...lol
-
Yea, the devil was in me for an instant and I thought... well never mind what I thought. I did the right thing in the end. >:D >:D :P
-
Got one adult and A youth stave out of the Elm, now it's a waiting game. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Looking good pappy... ;)
After cutting mine out it has gained over 2" of reflex from where it started, so its at 3 1/4" right now,n will prob gain a teeny bit more.
-
Nice job fellers! Pappy that stave is looking nice right out of the box. Mine is just sitting there in the dark basement on a slow dry. I'll rough out a bow in 6-8 weeks after it loses the bulk of moisture.
-
Ya Chris I probably should have waited but I use to do them this way a lot and just couldn't help myself, was in the mood so I just went for it. :) I sometimes get really busy in the spring and summer and don't want next August to slip up on me. ;) :)

I headed into the woods Saturday morning with a whole group, and ended up cutting down a pretty straight elm that yielded two sections. Paul Semp earned "front of the line" access to my beer tap by helping me hall them a 1/4 mile back to camp. I believe I got the better end of that deal, thanks Paul!!
My logs peeled like bananas and the bark came off in one peace. I plan to make a quiver that will be included with my bow for the raffle table.
Here are some pics that Pappy took of me debarking my logs, and I also took some pics of Matt, Pappy and others working on their logs.
As I make progress I'll post more pics to this thread. I will also be asking a lot of questions because this will be my first white wood bow.
-
More pics from the elm bow building.
-
This is a great thread, I'll be keeping an eye the process.
-
Laid out the rough shape on the stave peeled like an onion and cut it out. Parallel limbs all the way to the tips to start with. Then I clamped her to one of my bow blank forms and put in my hot box. I'm keeping the box lid open an inch or two so as not to cook it too quickly. Scaled down to two 100 watt bulbs instead of the usual four. I'll post a pic tonight.
-
Matt,
I'm planning to do some work on my elm stave later this week. I look forward to your pics.
Ed
-
Took the Kids bow off the drying form this passed weekend, it is looking really nice with good reflex and straight as an arrow, the larger on is doing well also but will require a little tweaking
so I put it back for another month of drying time. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Looks good Pappy.
I still have my elm split into halves and I was wondering if you think it's too late to do a quarter split, rough in and clamp to a form. Not sure it there would be an advantage at this point.

I checked on mine yesterday. Its peeled and still in the round. No checks on the ends or sides, sure feels lighter though. That's what I love about our basement. Its always 45-60% humidity, 65 degrees and dark year round. Wood dries great down there.
-
Mine is still in the round as well. Peeled the bark just after cutting it and sealed the ends with glue right away and brought it home where it has sat on the top of my stave pile since. Took a look at it today and
like Pearlies no checks anywhere. Not sure when I'll start on it, may be awhile.
-

A packed shed in Chicago mid winter? ;D
-
Ha I'd love for that to happen again
-
Send me a hand written special invite with colorful balloons on it and I'll be there, along with dragster Drew.
-
Man fellas those sure are looking nice! I've got 2 elm saplings to cut down in dad's fence row. I'll be watching this for sure. I would like to save the bark for handle wraps. I think it would be awesome to put its own bark on the handle that was made from the sapling. Patrick
-
Patrick that inner bark made some pretty tough cordage, and it was very green. Even after a day of drying the tubes (quivers) of bark Ed peeled off turned quite hard and rigid. Pretty useful tree.
-

I thought the red carpet last year was sufficient your highness
-
It was okay. But I want more this time.
-

Whatcha need 2 for? Tell ya what ... you cut 'em, peel 'em, and dry 'em nice & straight. Then I'll do ya a big favor and take one off your hands! >:D

Cool, I'll definitely try that when I cut my saplings! Patrick

So, fellas, anything to write about?
-
Haven't got my stave yet

Got both of mine floor tillered and ready to tiller, just letting them dry and cure a bit. :)

Mines still a roughed out blank in hibernation going thru a "cold phase" ;)
-
Just grabbed my stave this weekend, actually. Its getting pretty light. Time to cut it in half and let it sit for another few months.
-

I'm with you buddy, the "cold phase" part that is.
Patrick
-
Haven't touched mine yet. Currently working on a osage bow for a Heart Association raffle this Feb. I may split out a stave from the elm 1/2 log tonight.
-
Got started on the first of hopefully two bows to come out of the elm tree I cut for the raffle bow build. Started with the half with natural deflex built in. Had the approx. 4" dia. log still in the round until this past weekend and Pearly kindly sawed it in half for me on his band saw while I was at his place. I managed to rough one half out with the hatchet and bend it on the caul this week and heres where it sits now. Still a ways to go but its underway and once a bow gets started there is no stopping. :)
-
Good to see where you're at Greg!
Couple days ago I was thinking to myself, "What's goin' on with those Elm Hall elm poles?"
-
Is that a stiff handled bow Greg?
-
I forgot to remove the wood at the handle Paul. It may end up bendy, not sure just yet. I deviated from my original plan completely when I took a good look at the stave. I may even make this a ladies or youth weight bow and use the other reflexed stave for a mans weight bow. Either way they will be two different styles and not the matching his and hers set like I first had in mind.
-
Im diggin that profile Greg ;)
-
Looking Good Greg!
I like how you are using spacers on your cull to build in reflex into this bow, I assume that's what you're doing. I'm sure it will be a nice bow what ever weight you end up at.
Guess I should start my elm hall bow soon. I'm just finishing up my "heart ball" auction bow this weekend. I'll start a thread so you guys can have a look.
Ed
-
Greg....a stiff handle bow? First Pauly seen the light, and then there was one :)
-
Looking like its a good profile Greg. I haven't seen a bow like that from you sense that white oak one I think
-
Finally got after my piece of Elm tonight. After I cut it back in August I took all the bark off let it sit in the whole log for a month or so and split it in half. It was about a 4-inch log. Been sitting ever since and as I started to work on it I realized there are some splits that went off center. Must have happened when I split it. So realizing I almost don't have enough wood to make an adult size Bow figured might as well build a little kid one. This one is 49 tip to tip with a little pistol grip and cut in shelf. I'm shooting for 15 pounds at 18 inches. Should be about perfect for a 5 to 7 year old kid. Hopefully the other piece can get maybe a mid weight bow out of for a lady or a teenager. Even if I end up only getting a couple of kid bows to donate I'd much rather make a couple of kids day then one grown man. Here the first one is after heat treating
-
Ohhhh I'm likeing that handle some lucky kid will shoot the snot out of that Pauly
-
Shaping up nicely there Paul, having some kids bows on the raffle table will be great.
-
Might have to send some $$ up there to bid on that un.
-
Looking good so far Pauly. Mine is still in the round. I need to get it cut in half soon.
-
Got it to full brace and drawing to 18", as it sits right now it is at 40# at 18". Put it back in the hotbox for the night, should be able to tiller out to full draw in fairly short order at my next opportunity to work on it. I'm pleased with how it's coming along so
far.
-
Real nice buddy
-
That looks sweet Greg.
-
So far so good, Greg.
-
I'm liking that Greg, so are you going to go all in on ridgid handles now😃
-
Naw bub it's just a temporary detour. ;D
-
Got my young kids donation bow braced. Still needs some tweaking before I start pulling. Added some horn tip overlays. Decided I'm going to make at least one complete set up for a little kid. Gonna include a half a dozen arrows and a quiver of some sort. I'd like whichever kid wins it they have everything they need to go fling some arrows
-

Yes! That's wayyy kewl!!
-
The whole enchilada for some lucky youngster, thats the spirit. Can't wait to see the face of the kid who gets that set, very thoughtful of you Paul.
-
That's awesome Paul, really awesome
-
Finished with this one and heres a few pictures. The pictures aren't the best, camera won't function outside in natural light so had to snap 'em indoors again. I'm pleased with how it turned out, shoots real smooth and nice.

That is one nice looking bow Greg, somebody will be lucky to win that
-
Good lookin' bow, Greg. And am intrigued by the paintings on the wall too!
-
Nice looking bow Greg.
-
Jesus, Greg....
You take a piece of otherwise pretty boring Elm and make a piece of art out of it. My hat off to you, friend.
-
No kidding, Matt. I quit.
-
Just another gorgeous badly bent bow. Awesome job Greg, you have great style
-
Great looking bow Greg.
-
Thanks guys but I'm sure by the time everyone has their bows made and on the raffle table this one of mine won't look all that special. There will be some pretty fine looking bows to bid on and I'm looking forward to seeing them all and picking out one to try and win myself. From the number of participants involved there should be quite a variety to choose from. Its really fun to be a part of this with so many others, cutting a tree at the event one year and returning the next with a bow made from that tree. Cool idea and I think its Pearly that gets the credit for dreaming up the concept and getting a bunch of us onboard. :)
-
finished up my Elm Hall donation bow. The piece of wood I got last year had some funny stuff going on and all I was able to manage to get was staves for kids. So I decided to go with it and figure make up a half a dozen arrows and a quiver to go with it. My goal is a setup for a kid between maybe four and eight. I'll get my kid to give me a full draw
45 ntn/ 10@18.

Couple more

Wow that sure is pretty Paul
-
Braced profile looks great, Paul. Kid is gonna appreciate that arrow rest and locator grip!

That's a sweety, Pauly. Stain always looks good on hickory and elm. The waves in the grain turn into instant camo. Great braced shape to.
-
That one should get the attention of a lot of kids at the raffle, sweet looking bow Paul.
-
Wicked work guys! 8)!to bad I live so far from the event,it would be uber cool to be envolved in something like this!
-
Wanted to add full draw 8)
-
Mini Katniss! Perfect.
-
That's an adorable full draw
-
Atta girl Nina. I like the bow and your fancy boots. :)
-
Well I finished up my other trade bow and decided to get on the Elm Hall bow, I have had it roughed out since last August so I got it floor tillered and ready for some form work. Hope to have it shooting by the Classic, we will see. ;) :)
Pappy
-
think I'll be working on mine at The Classic. I had mine to the "bow blank" stage since November.
-
I'd like to somewhat cover all the bases guys. I would like to have enough variety to cover ages 8-80. Just so you know what my plans are so we can keep a rough idea, Drew and I are splitting my elm pole and making youth/ladies bows.
-
Damn Greg, very nice! Are you going to bring it to the Classic?

Remember reading that "Pearl" of a post and thinking he was gonna make one for my age group. You know ..... the senior senior group!
