Title: Yew Recurve - my trade bow
Post by: wizardgoat on June 19, 2015, 04:40:24 pm
This is the bow that I made at this years Classic for the self bow challenge. Some of you might remember it held a slight reflex that I cooked in, but the bow was 66" and I was only pulling 26".
I got home, cut 6" off and steamed in the curves. I worked it back to 26" at 50#, and most the deflex returned to the stave. Still not as bad if i didn't heat treat it, I think.
I wanted to give my guy a bow that had a classic PNW vibe to it, in my eyes anyways.  I will admit its slightly over built for a design I'd usually make narrower, but I wanted the bow to last him as long as he does, and with the cold and dry winters where she's going, I figured the trade off was worth it in the long run.
Tips are bighorn sheep from Chuck, I think I have enough overlay horn to last me my lifetime haha.
Strunk style handle, with elk hide from Bryce, and a fast flight string.

I hope my guy loves her as much as I do. Its a hard one to let go, has a little more sentimental value to me than other bows, but I know my dude will treat her well. you better!!!! ;)
Cheers guys, thanks for looking- Goat

Wow, that's a stunner.
Love that fat boy grip and the flip tips.
A bit of extra width doesn't do any harm.
Top job
Del

That bow is absolutely beautiful! I really like the knocks and the grip. Of course who doesn't like  a Strunk grip. I remember you working on that one at the classic!

It sure would be awesome to add that one to my arsenal! Very nice work! Patrick

Every time I see you posting a bow wizard, I know when I click the link I'm going to see a bow with awesome curves, excellent craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. I really enjoy looking at your work. You are a huge inspiration to me in this bowyering journey. The styles you make and the profiles you use always strike a cord with me. I'd be more than thrilled to be making weapons of that quality one day. Thanks for posting.
