Title: Born Again Frist Bow (w/ pics)
Post by: ricktrojanowski on February 05, 2008, 12:26:13 am
Here are some pics. of a bow I recently "rebuilt".  It started out as a blank from Gary Davis.  It was the first bow I ever worked on about 2 years ago.  I rushed it, it was over weight, the tiller was crappy - and overall I made a lame bow out of a great blank.
So while I'm waiting for some wood to dry, I decided to rebuild it and try some things that I've never done before.  I first cut off 4" from each tip.  I then re-tillered it to 5# over target weight.  Next I recurved the tips using a heat gun and form, and added black walnut tip overlays.  I also snakeskinned the back, wrapped the handle with buckskin, and made silencers from a fisher pelt.  The bow finished at 60# at 26" and is 60" nock to nock.

Thanks to all those who post how-to's and answered all my questions.  It sure makes the learning curve easier.
Rick

Nothing lame about that bow. I'd say it had a very successful rebirth.

Sorry Knocker I didn't take any pictures before I started on it.  I thought about it, unfortunatly it was after I cut it and started re-tillering.  I forgot to mention that it is a piece of osage.

That looks SWEEEET! Actually, I've contemplated whacking off a few inches from my first bow too, but I haven't got the nerve!

It would add a few pounds of draw weight.. ;)

Damn!! Nice save! That looks really good. Nice job on the tip flips and SS backing. Hey, Oldbow, does it qualify for BOM?

Wow - Nice bow.  I like the recurves, and those tips turned out great!

Maybe I missed it, and I'm certainly too novice to tell from the pictures, what type of wood?

Thankyou for all of the compliments they mean alot coming from bowyers of your caliber.  I get inspired from looking at your work.

To Big Wapiti   the wood is osage that I dyed with a light coat of Walnut Aniline dye to dampen the yellowness and then tru oiled.

To Oldbow     I appreciate the offer of being bookmarked for BOM but since it was a blank I don't think it would be right.  Much of the work was done by Gary Davis.  I'll be starting my first bow from scratch this weekend maybey if it comes out good it could be a candidate.
