Title: Glass Buttes, Oregon
Post by: Tracker0721 on May 20, 2015, 03:09:04 pm
So I'm road tripping from Central TX to Eastern WA and when I drive through I plan to load up some obsidian. Anyone know how to go about this? I'll be passing through in the first part of June. Heard rumor that the limit is like 250#s a year but that's it for rules that I've heard of. I'm sure there's gotta be more. Any help is appreciated!

I'm pretty sure your not allowed shovels. Hands only

no, wizard is wrong. shovels and hand tools OK. No power tools.
you'll want a shovel, pry bars of all sizes,. a nice long six foot "breaker bar" helps.
I have never seen anyone out there checking or weighing loads- I'd just go for as much as you want up to 250 lbs.
If you can, go out to the Riley Dacite pits- easy digging and big pieces.
do some google searches - there's a couple maps online.
old pits are being exhausted and new pits discovered all the time.
on google earth, search for musser resovoir.

Some where from the old days I have a map of where all the different rocks could be found.  I always liked the midnight lace and the electric blue.  Pry bars and shovels if you want to get anything of size!  Joe

Oh, and I forgot most of the time we used to make preforms right there so not to carry so much waste home.  Also always donated a little blood to appease the hills!  Joe

So I had to fly back to texas and the movers are ridiculous so I'm getting a uhaul and driving again. Would a Uhaul make it to a good spot ya think? Hahaha

UM,... if you are lucky, yhe uhaul would get to musser resovoir, but to go beyond that would be near impossible. I wouldn't recommend the Riley Dacite pits in a uhaul. you could drive to musser res and go by bicycle from there. Be very careful- glass buttes is an unforgiving landscape with no water, bad roads, snakes, ticks, rednecks, and worse. If you do happen to get stuck out there please contact me- I know people in the local area. I will PM you my contact info.

Maybe I'll just come back later when I have my truck haha. Don't really wanna get a Uhaul in there or try too. Is there any knap-ins or anything that happen there?
