In my experience any fruit tree makes a good bow. I have seen palm bows. Also any nut procuding tree.  There is wood down there. Just gadda figure out how to use it.

Carrot wood, down here in Southwest Florida (Fort Myers) is a common invasive exotic species that makes good tension/backing wood anyway.  Not so hot in compression though.  Lots of other exotics here to play with.

The palms we have in Florida are not gonna make a bow. I believe the only palm used for bows is black palm.

fredie,
Dont know squat about florida wood, but do you have crepe myrtle? if so I have some bows made from it and have made one from it. It is very "snappy" wood and makes a good, strong short bow. The stuff I am familiar with came from south Georgia so if you have it and it's the same it will make a very good bow.
The thin bark scrapes off fairly easily after drying (will prevent checks) using a pocket knife.....and I understand you need to tie it down to keep it from gettin kiddy-wampus. Hope that helps a little.
