Title: Is This Anything?
Post by: Del the cat on May 11, 2015, 04:24:37 am
Mrs Cat :-* found this in the garden and wondered if it had maybe been knapped?
It doesn't look like a finished article so we don't really think so... but does have some ... well heck, I know zip... so what do you guys think?
Overall length 2 3/4"
Del
(be gentle with us, we don't want to upset Mrs Cat ;D )

That does appear to have been roughly worked a little on the end, maybe Del. perhaps a few test chips then discarded, maybe your basic crude tool, maybe a product of Mother Nature or farm equipment. Who's to say for sure, have found many much the same.

With that zig-zag pattern, it sure looks worked. I would guess the same as Cowboy... Worked and discarded. But I would definitely hang on to it.

Yep, it looks like it was intentionally chipped.  If it were me, I would keep digging for more...   :)

For what it is worth.
That chunk of chert sure looks like a core.
More interesting is the honey color.
From what little I know about English flint--
that chunk looks like it comes from the other side of the Channel.
If so it was imported with a purpose.
More Danish??
Good on Mrs Cat Eyes.

I agree with everybody else, looks worked and probably discarded when they couldn't get a flake to travel over the top and knock that ridge off.
Don, the Danish flint I have is dark gray with concrete inclusions.

Ed, no doubt there is French and Danish gray/black flints.
I do know there is honey colored flint on the mainland.
If there is native honey or the color in Del's photos in the
London area I just haven't been privy to the fact.
It would be cool to know for sure. I don't have to be
gentle with you, just Del and the Mrs. LOL >:D
Sorry I have missed you all this spring.
