A few weeks ago I finally found a good deal on a small trailer. I've been wanting one for a while but never had the money or found the right deal. Its 5'X12', with a 2200 lb axle. The lights worked and the tires were in good shape but the guy told me he didn't know how old they were. It had non working electric brakes that rubbed enough to get the rims warm on the drive home. I ripped those off and greased the bearings while I had it apart. The tires worried me with the amount of weight I want to haul with it. I went ahead and got two new tires with rims. I'll use the old ones as spares.
I would like to build a tear drop shaped camper shell for it but don't have enough time before the Classic to make it the way I want to. I talked it over with my Dad(He's a pretty smart feller) and we tossed around a few different ideas. We settled on a simple Hi Lo camper design. The plan is to make a 4' high wall around the camper and then make a 2' lid that will fit over it. When I get to Pappy's I'll raise the top and latch it in place. I'll have an inside height of around 5'10" or so. That's more than enough for me ::) We want to put a couple of small windows in it. I picked up most of the supplies that we need and we are getting started on it early tomorrow morning. We are trying to make it simple and cheap. I'll only use it at the Classic and maybe a couple of smaller gatherings. It just needs to keep me off the ground and out of the rain. I don't plan on doing any work on the inside of it. I'll just throw an air mattress down and be good to go. I'll try to take a few pictures of the progress.

This is kind of what we are wanting to build. Just more redneck looking ;D

I realize I am setting myself up for some easy short jokes :P

Clint, i been mullin over the same idea since the last Classic but aint found a deal on a trailer yet...goodluck Bro.... Brian
-
That's gonna be pretty cool. Clint. I can't wait to see it in person. 8)
-
Brian, I did a lot of Craigslist searching before finding that one. Got it for 2 bills.
Pat, I hope we have it done in time.
Forgot to mention that we are planning on making it removable so we can store it away when not in use. I'll be able to use the trailer for other purposes this summer.
-
Clint have you looked at the "TAB" design? I think it's pretty cool. I would modify it for hauling staves. Make a back hatch to stick staves in that go under your bed on the inside. My drawing sucks but you can probably get the idea.
-
Dave, that's more like what I really wanted to build. I don't have enough time to get something like that done before the Classic. Maybe next year.
-
Hey, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. :) Just make it so you can easily unbolt and slide if off the trail. Wahlah a deer blind. ;)
-
Glad you found a trailer! Sounds like the plan will work just fine. My father in law had the idea of putting a slide in truck camper on his trailer with non permanent anchors for our deer camp. Sometimes find a used one for a decent price.
Tracy
-
That's the great thing about the people I have met at the classic! They think "I can build that!" Its been my misfortune to think that way all my life and going to the Classic to meet a bunch of talented like minded people is what its all about! Can't wait to see your trailer! Joe
-
Cool! Post lots of photos.
Have been pondering the possibilities of building something like that myself.
Mine will have to be fairly nice so the wife will stay in it. ::)
So.... You going to "Raise the Roof" when you get to the Classic?
David
-
I'll pop for some insul board for the interior if it will keep the sound of your snoring down! >:D
-
Great idea clint, but do ya need the hi part >:D
-
David, I'll need some help raising the roof ;)
Sounds like a plan Scott ;D
Bubby, It's awful tempting to just slap a roof on it as it is now but I want room to stand up.
-
Great idea clint, but do ya need the hi part >:D
That was unkind and completely uncalled for. You should apologize for insinuating he may never have guests visiting in his camper.
-
We did a lot of measure, figuring, more measuring, and a little building. We got the bottom all done except for the door. We decided to make it only 10' long because of how the boards were on the front of the trailer. We were afraid water would run back in under the wall if we made it the full length.
We put some Z channel behind the sheeting so the water wouldn't run back under it.

-
That's OK JW. I won't have to worry about any tall people asking to borrow it ;D
It might be a couple of days before I can work on it again. Next up is making the doors and the top half. We were able to get by without using some of the supplies that I bought. I'm returning them and getting some more stuff tomorrow after work. I should have $35 of stuff to return.
-
Would you please do me the favor of finishing the interior trim with (dare I say it?) osage?
-
Great start there 00. JW, I'm sure there interior will have plenty of osage "furniture"
-
I would love to get a double axle trailer and make a rustic tear drop camper with osage siding. That's my dream camper. I'll be happy with my redneck ramada when I finish it next week.
-
Yeah, you might need a double axle trailer to handle the weight of osage, but then again particle board is pretty darn heavy, also. I'd like to build a small tear drop camper of cedar. You know we have a friend who is retired and has a saw mill. I'd bet with the right trade of a bow, arrows, quiver and some rocks for knapping, you could have osage siding cut and delivered to the Moon Tree Gathering next year.
-
Now that sounds like a plan Dave. I could supply the logs. There are plenty of twisted trees on my place that would work great for that.
-
Talk to Brian at the Classic. While I (we) can't get him to build a bow, he loves working with wood. I know you're not a "rock hound", but I also know you are a trader. Brian would love some rocks to pound on. It doesn't take a lot of wood to make a lot of siding. He built a 16 foot cedar strip canoe from like 6: 1x8x12 boards. And actually, driving to Brian's wouldn't take you much longer than driving to my place. Just catch I-65 out of Louisville to the Cave City exit. It may actually be shorter. I think Brian can get to Louisville in 1 1/2 hours
-
Where the holes to catch the fish in that shanty eh?
-
I'll give you a Tip; You are going to need some good ventilation building it out of Particle Board. The formaldehyde will run you out of it if it stays closed up. My Tear drop is made from it and I have to air it out for a week before I use it.
-
That's not the only reason it needs ventilation >:D
-
That's not the only reason it needs ventilation >:D
I swear it was my skunk quiver ;D
Thanks for the tip Mullet. I'm putting a couple of windows in it. I'll let it air out until I load it up to head to Pappy's. With all the smoke and wood dust I'll be breathing around the bow shop I probably won't notice the particle board smell.
-
Can you seal the OSB board with paint to eliminate the formaldehyde fumes?
-
I was planning on painting the outside. I guess I could paint the inside to. I have some polyurethane. I might use that inside instead.
-
:)
That's not the only reason it needs ventilation >:D
+1 on that!!!! :) >:D ;) LMAO........
Cool idea Clint ... can't wait to see it!

I thought it was great.. LMAO

Might need some potpourri. >:D
-
Not strong enough Ryan ;)
Got a little more done on it. I took apart my reflex caul and used it to lay out the lines for the roof supports. I should end up with about 4" of deflex on the roof ;D I finished the door but I'm going to wait for help to hang it. Got the new tires installed also. I was pretty nervous about making the trip on the old set.

Cool project Clint, and I like the term Redneck Ramada. Keep posting pics of your progress, I enjoy seeing these kinda of projects as they are being done. Looking forward to seeing it in a couple weeks buddy.
-
Looking good Clint. :)
Pappy
-
Looks great, Clintster! I don't get all of the "short" incinuations? :-\ ??? :o Perfect if you ask me.
-
Nice idea and project. Coming along good.
-
This is a great project Clint. I have thought of making something similar. You should paint "Osage Outlaw" on the side of it.
-
I doubt I'll have time to do any artwork on it Ryan.
We got the frame done for the roof. Its starting to look better.

I can't wait to see this baby in person. Cool Clint! 8)
-
I think we should all bring some paint, and paint it at the Classic for you. It would be the "Spirit Wagon"
-
Looking great, Clintster. Can't wait to see it!
-
Pretty neat, can't wait to see what it turns out like
-
Sure is fun to see all the talent at the Classic! If the party to celebrate the Osage Mobile Inn doesn't cause too much damage you could probably sell it at the end of the Classic for a profit. Then you could build Osage number two! Like bow making one is just the start! And some of us height challenged fellows would have a place to sleep when we are in the dog house! Joe
-
Appears to be mighty strong roof. No deflex in that sucker. Should support a/c unit, tv dish, & weather station ... no problem!
-
Can anyone make stencils?
-
I like that Matt! It would be cool if someone wanted to paint some stuff like that on it.
We got the bottom door hung after some minor adjustments. The top door is on the to-do list for tomorrow. We framed in the top section except for the windows.

Were were trying to figure out what to do about windows. My Dad suggested that we go to a truck camper plant a few miles down the road and see if they had any used windows. We ended up getting a pair of 15" x 30" crank out windows with screens for $25. One has a slight damaged spot on the bottom of the frame but its nothing we can't fix. The other one is just dusty. They even threw in a long piece of screen material. Tomorrow we are going to frame around them and then put the sheeting on the top half. I'm hoping to get it ready for paint by the end of the day.

-
Its really startin to come together now 👍👍👌..... Brian
-
Man clint nobody can accuse you of being lazy getting a bunch done
-
Yes it is. I can't wait to see what it looks like done and painted. There sure is a lot of redneck engineering involved in this thing. I was thinking it was a 2 day project ::) I have really enjoyed working on it with my Dad. Its been nice spending so much time with him just working and talking. Seems like the older I get the more I want to spend time with him.
-
I may have missed it somewhere but what are you planning to put on the sides and the floor..
-
That camper looks awesome Clint!
I'm gonna build one like this someday (see below). ;D
-
Get Ya one of those thick/bold markers and write "Twin Oaks or Bust!" on the back ! Bob
-
That rig is coming along Clint. It's funny how dad's get so much smarter as they get older. ;) :) :) Enjoy your time with him. :)
Pappy
-
I've seen that picture before Patrick. I like the rustic look of it.
Caveman, I have carpet to put down on the floor. I'm not going to put anything on the inside walls.
Bob, That's a good idea
Pappy, they sure do ;)
-
I got access to a vinyl cutter but i dont think it will stick to the rough surface...if it would we could hook you up with some graphics..maybe some racing stripes, lol.... Brian
-
I must say OO you have got my curiosities up.
Nice Job indeed.
If you were to install a wood heater it could be used year round.
Davd
-
just an idea for you, you may want to put some vapor barrier in between those floor planks and your carpet. wouldn't take long for that carpet to suck up moisture and get real moldy on you.
-
David, he could make a smoker out of it for summer use. ;D
-
Thanks for the offer Brian. I think you are right about it not sticking though.
David, I'll put a small space heater in it for cold weather use.
Paul, I'm using two area rugs for the carpet. I'm not going to leave them in it all the time. I planned on putting them down after I unload my cargo. I guess it wouldn't hurt to put a tarp down first.
We got the top door and the windows framed in and put the siding on the front and both sides. We also installed some cross boards on the inside of the bottom half to add some support to the walls. I was really hoping to get the windows installed today but we had to stop early for a track meet. It doesn't look like we got much done but we worked on it most of the day. This is taking a lot longer than we thought. I might have to dry the paint on the drive down.

How do you plan on lifting the top? It must weigh quite a bit. Lots of friends? Lots of beer? ;D ;D
-
This is a blast, OO. I am enjoying the thread.
-
How do you plan on lifting the top? It must weigh quite a bit. Lots of friends? Lots of beer? ;D ;D
Its not very heavy right now. We still need to put the roof panels on and the windows. When I get to the classic I'm hoping to get by with a little help from my friends ;)
-
Taking shape and looking good Clint !
Tracy
-
Thanks Tracy.
We got a lot done today. First up was the top half door. We made it a little larger than the bottom door so they will both open when the top is down.
We installed a heavy duty I-bolt in the front that goes through both sections. I'm going to strap it to the front of the trailer to add some support against the wind when I'm driving. We also put a bolt through both sections under each window. It will lock both halves together and keep the wind from shaking the top half......hopefully.
We rolled it outside to put the roof on. This is the first time I have been able to get back and look at it. It doesn't look to redneck ;D We quickly realized we had spaced the roof supports wrong. I was out of 2x6 lumber so I had to sacrifice the back of my bow caul to make a new support to fix the mistake.
The roof went on fairly easy. Liquid nails and washered screws are holding it down. We caulked all the seams. I'm going to start painting it tomorrow. After its painted I'm going to spray them with Flex Seal. If it leaks I could throw a tarp over it :-\
(http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r55/clintanders/Mobile%20Uploads/20150423_191545.jpg)
We took the top half off to paint it. It took three of us to pick it up off of the bottom half. Its got some weight to it but its not to bad. Two guys could lift and carry it. The top half is most of the weight. I wanted to put the windows in but decided it would be easier to paint it first.
-
Now that's cool! You're gonna spoil yourself with that unit. Josh
-
Its no Kenebago but it will do ;)
-
Im diggin it..... Brian
-
I can't wait to see it in about a week.
-
Got the first coat of paint on it. I'm hoping its dry enough in the morning for a second coat.

Wow sweet camper. I was hoping to go to the classic this year but we have state track meet that week. I really think we can win a championship this year, been runner up last 3 years.
Grady
-
Good luck Grady. My kids both do track.
-
Looking cool, wish I was going to be there to see it parked up :(
Don't paint any critters on the side ... just sayin' >:D

Don't paint any critters on the side ... just sayin' >:D
Del
   That's good advice right there!
-
If I was more artistic I'd painted it a burnt orange color and put lighter colored rings on the front and back so it would look like a big osage log ;D
-
I hope you glued before you used screws to put your camper together. Having traveled to New Mexico 11 times the past winters I have had to tighten screws back up many times. You may not have the problem that regular size travel trailers have but those things rock back and forth all the way down the road and things come loose all the time. Your "pop up" may not do that quite as bad because it is low to the ground but it will rock a bit and screws will come loose. I know if I ever buy another camper I will pay the extra bucks for aluminum studded walls.
Nice looking rig and looks to be a fun project to put together. Thanks for the up dates.
-
I am really enjoying seeing this come together Clint. What type of paint did you use for it?
-
Jeb, we used liquid nails on the roof but just screws everywhere else. Hope it stays tight. I'll have it anchored securely.
Falcon, I used an industrial exterior enamel gloss paint
Well, we just about have it finished. I put a second coat of paint on it at 6:30 this morning. I sealed the inside with polyurethane to. We put some corner trim on the front and back roof edge and along the corners of the bottom half. I still need to put the corners on the top half. We drilled a hole on each corner and made metal rods to slide in to hold the top half up. We installed the windows today to. I need to figure out the door latches to. That shouldn't be to hard. When we had it raised I had plenty of room to stand up inside. It should work just fine. The corner trim and windows make it look less redneck I think.

That's awesome, Clint! Try to look a little more happy about it in the next pictures, ok?
-
He's to damn tired to look happy great job on the hobbit hut clint😈😄
-
Exactly Bubby.
JW, I'll smile late Monday evening when I stumble into the camper parked in a valley in Tennessee
-
And who wouldn't, Clint?
-
Good point JW. It is a special place.
-
Good idea, to make it removable, just not too easily removed. 8) Wouldn't want it to come off while on the way to the Classic! :o And don't let them make fun of your having to stand on a bucket to kick a duck in the butt! Besides, you will notice that Mullet will be hanging around you a lot at the Classic to make himself look a bit taller! ;) ::) So you will have excellent company, while others will have to mingle to find someone to talk to. You will be able to talk to Eddie, and gain a wealth of knowledge, while providing a service to him. ;)
Wayne
-
Great build along, love the pics :)
I think it needs the edges radiused a 1/4" and 3 feathers stuck on the back to improve the aerodynamics? ;) ::)
Mind you gotta stick the feathers on dead straight, you don't want her spinning when you get up to speed :o
Del

I sprayed all the seams on the roof with flex seal and put a super heavy 3rd coat of paint on it. I'm feeling much better about it now. It's all loaded up and ready for the maiden voyage. I'm heading towards Twin Oaks first thing in the morning.

Bon voyage, Clint. See you in a few days.

Sure wish I was making it to tenersee this year...I'd bring me sum pink spray paint and write Hillbilly Deluxe all over that thang
Good luck n have fun pal!!!

She's good for 70 mph ;D
-
Is that proven?
-
Yep ;)
-
Cool! See ya tomorrow!
-
Looking good! 8) Looks like a Gypsy wagon! ;) Just an idea, I would put a sheet of 5/8's real plywood on the trailer boards, after caulking the cracks and painting them well with Urethane, and then do the same to ply wood, and put it down for your floor. remember the weather at the Classic, "and think about putting pontoons on the side, and an outboard motor pad, on it" ::) :P. I saw a really neat small house boat, years ago, it was a pontoon boat, with an angle iron, frame on it, and the boat had a truck camper on the frames, and secured by big thumb screws, and brackets. He pulled the boat up out of the water, and on to his trailer, and then slid the camper onto his truck! 8) It was a really neat setup! Are you going to insulate it? Looking good. Careful, you might have mullet for a roomy, he can stand up in it also. And he is already used to the Formaldehyde fumes. A Classic, bound for the Classic! ;)
Wayne
-
Well???? How was the first night in the chateaux de Anders? Did you try it out or did you stay up all night again? ::) Josh
-
josh clint sent me a text about 8:00 pm western time and he was working a stave, i'm guessing all niter
-
No all nighter yet but I've shut the bow shop down the last 2 nights. Spent hours chasing a ring on a Creamsicle stave and then let Will trade me out of it. The camper is working great. I slept very good last night. I've added some custom features like a screen door and F-clamp door latch.
-
Glad you made it O.O. Keep us informed. Those of us that will not be there will love the reports. Don't let anybody see you using electronics though. Could be a source of some uncomfortable ribbing. ;)
-
Getting to see it in person I'm pretty impressed pal...cept for your hoky door lock...lol

6 turns to the left ;)
