Title: "Calliope"
Post by: lostarrow on March 23, 2015, 01:22:03 am
Thought I'd share. I haven't been doing a lot in the way of bowmaking for the last 6 Months ,but I did manage to get one made up for a lady before Christmas. Her request was hummingbird theme ,and we took it from there. Sorry , no full draw pics. I have a short video somewhere ,but wouldn't know how to post it anyway. weather was way too crappy to get out to get a proper full draw shot . Hopefully she'll get out shooting it soon, now that the weather is breaking, and she'll send some pictures. Here's what I ended up shipping . Bamboo Backed Ipe, 46#@28" . Carved nocks. Abalone shell Hibiscus flower arrow strike. Filigree black leather over purple velvet handle. Slightly deflexed out of the handle and the tips were very slightly reflexed . The nocks weren't much bigger than an arrow  but The ipe allowed me to maintain a stiff tip for the last 6" or so.

A couple more. I'm amazed at the power from such a twig of a bow. I'm not sure the pictures relate just how delicate this little bow is. Hope you enjoy.

The bird on the nock is great, my first thought was that it looked like our kingfisher. Very nicely done.

Thanks for all the compliments guys !  She seemed quite pleased with the bow , which is the greatest reward .
The inlay is all from the same she'll , just different areas for the different colours . I love Abalone !😃
Peace bow:  the tip overlays are blood wood . They looked quite nice before paint ( I liked it better ) but its always a toss up .

Wow!!! Holy creative art bow!
I think the painted up version of the nocks looks great!! I love how you incorporated the nock grooves into the hummer and the especially the leaves. Very neat work.
The inlay work is inspiring and the cutout leather with purple cloth underneath is a real eye poper!  What a unique bow!

Those leaves look awesome! What did you use to draw the detail onto the abalone shell?

Thanks again for the kind words guys . I know I enjoy seeing all of the fine bows you've crafted . It's good to be in such fine company !
Ardent : the details in the inlay are scrimshawed ( ground in with a dremel ) then filled in with black paint ( if I recall ) before being polished.
