Title: Moldy leather
Post by: madcrow on February 17, 2015, 11:20:22 am
Will commercial grade leather survive a washing machine?  I was looking thru a storage cabinet in my closet for some leather and noticed that some of it has a good layer of mold on it.  It hasn't been wet, so i don't know why it would mold.  Any thoughts?

Hey, not sure why it's moldy, but I used to "occasionally" wash my my old patched up leather punk pants! Haha

I'd have to say no with the washing machine.. Depending on the type of leather? Latigo I presume.. Hand scrub with quat solution to kill the mold
Thanks Leroy

I would not wash the leather but you could wipe the mold off with a damp towel with mild Clorox water. If the mold has gotten into the leather it will leave a stain of a slight color change.

Thanks guys.  Two pieces were goos sized buckskin.  They went thru the washer and dryer fine.  Actually washed most of the smoke smell out that i love, but my wife hates the smell.  The rest is just regulat chrome tanned pieces from garment grade to 6 ounce weight.

Vinegar will kill mold permanently.
