I decided to start an additional thread so I could monitor feedback better. I have a bit of a quandry and I want to see what the general consesus is. Heres the quandry. As you all know I have 41 staves I'm giving away. So far they are going as far away as Alaska, canada and various parts of the US. I did some initial research with my local Post Office with worse case scenerios in terms of size length weight etc... just to get an idea of about what it would cost per stave. I think I have a pretty good idea based on the regions but I'm not about to take 40 staves to the post office and get an exact quote on each and then wait for people to send in their shipping $$ before shipping. On the other hand I can't afford to just ship em and wait for the money. That does'nt seem prudent either. What I'm thinking is this and you guys tell me if this seems satisfactory. I'm thinking that I will guestima hte based on my initial info from post office and then add $5. That way if I'm off a little it has me covered and I don't end up having to pay to give em away. I'm not trying to make money on it either, just be fair all the way around and still cover my bases. What do you guys think? After we get a good number of responses it will give me a good idea what most think is acceptable. I already know whats acceptable to me but my reputation is important to me and want to make sure I handle this in the right manner.
An example of shipping varience based on a 70" x 4"x4" stave going to Maine is $28.90 going to FlagstaffAz, is $24 palm Harbor,Florida$27 Sandy,Utah $23 North of Kenai Alaska $45 various places in Canada ranging from$48-50. I think you get the picture. Some of these staves will be shorter, heavier, lighter etc... so theres no real way of knowing until I take em in. I'm not inclined to go to all that exact trouble on so many when theres no money trying to be made on this deal anyway.
I look forward to hearing from you guys. Danny

Sounds good to me bro! 8)very nice of you also!
-
Generosity such as this is priceless,so i say no one should complain about your idea
-
You could make two shipping groups. One for all the national shipping, and one for international. Then average the two groups separately.
-
Could i have a bow stave as well?
-
Danny I know you personally so I'm kinda biased. I think for all your generosity and how much trouble you will be going to, I say an extra $5 over estimated cost IS A HECKUVA GOOD DEAL. If someone has a problem with it they aren't worthy IMO.
-
Aw shucks Jon your getting me all choked up...sniff sniff. Thanks for the support though, I appreciate it. Its not like I'm giving away all my real good stuff though. If I did that it might not be generosity, more like insanity. Danny
-
Sounds like a good deal to me sir!!
-
Sorry, missed this posted elsewhere,I think you are being very generous, I would be very happy to get a stave for shipping + $5.
-
I wouldn't worry too much if it was even $10 more. You are doing the work after all.
-
And I'll add, $35 for a stave is way cheaper than $90
-
Sounds good to me too. Thanks for doing this.
-
Sounds good to me. After all, shipping 41 staves is a lot of work. You don't need to loose money too.
Mike

I think that sounds more than fair. As the saying goes: don't look a gift horse in the mouth (I think) :)
-
Sounds reasonable.
-
That sounds good, i mean you are probably wraping them aren't you ;)
-
I was lucky enough to see Danny's giveaway post and PM'd right away. That's a really generous thing to do and your time packaging and taking them to the Post Office should be worth something, too. I'm with JoJo, add enough to make it worth your while.
Thanks again!
-
Yeah, I dont always wrap em but I talked with Clint and he suggested I do. If you want one Bub Pm me and I'll send it your way. I think I have about 4 left thats not spoken for yet.
Thanks for the encouraging words fellas
-
I am good with whatever you decide. Doing two group averages (high and low) + $5-$10 seems fair, but if you decide that one average for everything is easier to you, then that is great too. Will you PM the lucky ones?
-
I think the fact you're taking the trouble to do all of this for us. It is very generous of you. I think paying a little extra would be the least thing that would concern me. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest bit

I couldn't agree more.
-
I've submitted a PM earlier and think that you are doing a great thing for all of us. You've done all the work here. I hope that you in the end end up ahead! You have to figure that your time is worth something and with that number of staves you've put your time in already! I'd have no problem paying an additional amount and hope to be able to post a finished piece from your stave pile, as well as photos from the field.
-
Thanks guys. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
I really don't mind Puck. Its better to see this stuff get turned into bows than to let it collect dust. Its not like I'm gonna quit finding good osage either, so I need to do a better job of disciplining my harvest choices to maximize the best return and not build up so much iffy stuff I never touch. I used to be much more overly optimistic in my harvest choices than I am now. I pass on alot of trees now days. So I hope every one gets happy with what ever stave they get and give it their best go. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it.
I sent many PM's tonight and they said I was over my 20 an hr rate so I will pick it up again tomorrow and get it settled so we can start shipping some staves. We'll see ya'all tomorrow.
-
This was really a nice gesture to the community here. Shipping out 41 staves to different addresses is a real job.
-
Very fair and very generous, a lot of work there.
I think I'd have added $10... but then I'm a tightwad ;) ;D

This is a very generous thing you're doing. Just wanted to say thanks.
Cheers

That sounds good, I'll take that any day. Hope I'm still in on one! ;D
-
Everyone that has contacted me has recieved a PM with the amount to send and were. 37 total. I will let you guys know when they start to ship. Gotta go to work today. I will check in later. Gotta get some debarking done today too. Danny
-
Debarking ang sap removed is worth way more than 5 bucks. Very nice of you. If someone complains they could go scratch as far as im concerned :)
-
Danny if it helps at all I don't have a moment's hesitation paying $35 to touch my first ever osage stave. Ill go so far as to say I still feel iou more than a thank you. Money is on the way... very excited! Thank you for going through all the trouble and bother.
-
This is fine with me. You are investing a lot of time into this :)
-
Sounds great to me.
-
I guess what comes around goes around. I was telling my buddy Chris about fixing to ship 40 staves and needing to pick up some plastic and he said he had a 4mil 8x50ft roll he cabbaged off of a lumber yard that was closing a few years back. Gave it to me so no supplies other than duck tape needed and i get plenty of that. I think I have communicated with everyone that responded. If you have not heard back from me send me a PM.
-
I started getting shipping money in today and shipped 6 staves. I realize that I have figured an average of $12 too high on each one of those. I have contacted by PM those guys already.
If you have'nt sent me your shipping money yet, make sure and take $10 off what I told you on shipping. If you have sent your shipping in already then I will refund the difference I told you if you want me to. Just wait til you get your staves and let me know what you want me to do. Sorry about that. It was just kind of hard to guestimate and I didn't want to figured it low, just not that high. The wife says I'm making a big to do about nothing, but my reputation means something to me and when I tell someone something I try and make sure its the truth. Danny
-
No need for a refund on my end!! I'm grateful for your generosity and all the time you are donating along with the staves. Thanks again!!
Aaron
-
I'm with Aaron, in my opinion I feel you deserve more than this for your time, effort and generosity.
-

Same from me.

No worries Danny. :)
-
I'm good here Danny... No refunds :)
-
i'm good, no refund here either :)
-
I like this place!
-
I'm with your wife/ no problem/ take her out or buy her a Valentines present.
-
Danny,
Thanks for the generosity but just keep the money. It is well worth it. At least we'll get a piece of wood from someone that knows what bow wood should be without taking a gamble on E-bay.
v/r, Bobby Kelley
-
Dont think of it as payment , think of it as a tip
-
No refund needed here. You were more than generous in my opinion. Like someone else said buy the wife something nice. Happy wife happy life right?
-
Still working on getting my check out.
-
You guys are great. Thanks. Got 3 more shipped out yesterday. Will check the mail today when I go to town.
-

Ditto for me! I got my stave today, and will be digging into it as soon as I get a spare minute. It looks like a good one!
-
Tim,
Jeff has a thread started on build alongs for the staves. You might want to start it off with a pic of the stave and then post stages as you go. I am looking forward to this one. Danny
-
Ok. we shipped 7 yesterday and 4 today. The stack is starting to shrink. We've shipped 20 staves so far. I've kind of gotten a rythm going on my schedule of checking my roofing projects and going to town and going to the post office. So far so good. Not much brain damage, just a little planning and effort. Just about half way done. Hope everybody likes what they got and have to work with. Some are a little better than others but they all have bow potential.
-
Danny, I don't want to crash the post but is it easy to ship into Canada? or out from Canada to U.S. with staves? I might want to trade for some staves I can't get in Ontario, Canada in future
-
Danny you've been very generous already, I appreciate it greatly as I'm sure everyone does. I don't want you to have to pay to give 'em away! Whatever seems fair to you is more than ok with me.
-
I need to check the site more, I hadn't realized this was happening.
-
Got my stave today, a natural RD with character and a few knots, ring poprotions very good, short and thin, definitely a bow there, but have to put it on hold for a couple of months, very happy with what I got.
-
N8tr, Its not too bad. You have to fill out a customs form and list it as craft supplies but other than that its just pricier than in the states. You can find guys on here that would probabley do some trading, just have to go the trade blanket and start a thread.
-
Can't wait to see mine when it comes in the mail!
