Title: "Staghorn" Bow for my friend
Post by: Arrowind on January 31, 2015, 12:05:51 am
About a year ago my friend wanted to go test out his new wildlife motion activated camera. (what ever it's called).  We went hiking to set it up and while we were looking for a good spot I noticed something on the ground....I took off running toward the object and sure enough it was exactly what I hoped it was.  A deer antler!  A nice shed just sitting there for me to claim it!   I held it up and yelled to my friend.  "Dude! Check it out!"  He was so jealous.  He came running over with eyes wide and said "Ah man I HATE YOU!" with a big envious smile.  He just kept saying it.

It was awesome.  I love to be the guy to find stuff for once!

Anyway he is a good friend.  He loves to hunt and he loves bow hunting.   He's been using a compound bow.

Since that day I've been meaning to make him a bow.  Since he liked the antler so much I decided to use it in some way on the bow.

I finally got around to building it and this is what I came up with.   You should have seen his face when I gave it to him.  It was awesome!

I told him I was going to convert him to traditional archery.  He said: "Well this just might do it!" with a big grin.

Wowza, nice tillering job.  You must be a "deer" friend to make that for him!

Nice job on that hickory. That oughta make it easy for him to make the switch from the wheelie. ;)

Great work all around.  Your leather work is fantastic, what did you use to "texture" it?

THANKS GUYS!   I sure appreciate it!

@ Falcon.  Thanks!  I used a rope.   You get the leather wet place it on the handle where you want it then wrap it tight with a rope.  Let it sit over night.  Take the rope off.  Let it continue to dry out for a few hours then you are ready to go.

That is a really beauty, top shelf work all around and on leather too.
Looks like a very high nocking point in the braced profile.

Thanks again everyone.

simson - THANKS!  yes.  I was thinking that too (about the high nocking point).  I shot it and shot it and shot it.  That spot seemed to work well but honestly I was still not confident.  It needs to be tuned a little more but my friend is moving out of town and I wanted to hurry up and give it to him.   I told him we may need to tune it more.   thanks for pointing it out.

What?  You guys that talk smack about board bows got nothing?  That's right! Uh-huh!  That's right!

What the heck, no one else was stirring the pot on this thread, thought I'd give it a swirl!   I caught myself going back to the pics again and again this morning.  Dang, man, just plain dang!

Gutshot, lebhuntfish, Thanks!

Hey JW_Halverson - you stirring things up!?   >:D   :P

Glad you like the bow.  Thanks for checking it out! again!  Hey that board came from a tree.  It's 100% wood! ...Well there is some other stuff attached with glue and glue on the handle etc but well you know it was growing in the ground at one time.  Just like any stave!  ::)

Will that texture stay in the handle grip or smooth out? I really like the lines of this bow. Beautiful.

Thanks Lebhuntfish! -  hey I just want to make bows and boards are the easiest way for me to do that.

Hey Weylin!!  Thanks bro!  I always like to hear your opinion.  PS  -  I shot my trade bow from you not too long ago.  That thing is AWESOME!

Shaeisneato - thanks dude.  YES that texture should stay there very well for a long time.  But keep in mind just like any thing that get's a lot of use you will see signs of wear.  In this case it should smooth out a little over time just like any handle.

Wonderful bow! You did a great job with 'just' a plain ole' board of hickory. Very nice finishing work and great attention to details. All those bits add up, you know. Leather handle with details, clean stitching, signature, black tips, staghorn nocks, handle... classy!
Well done! :)
