If all goes well tomorrow I am going to pick up an Osage stave to build my first bow and get some much needed help from an experienced builder. I have heard of people building a bow with nothing but a K-Bar. I plan to use only carbon steel hand tools and try to build a functional primitive bow. As an Anthropology major this is something I have thought about since I was a kid. I will need more help, advice, and maybe a shoulder. Wish me luck.

You can get all the personal help, advise and a shoulder if you need it right here on PA. We like pictures, not only of finished bows but as you are building and running into problems.

Good luck and take your time! Plenty of good advice you can find here, don't be shy about asking.

Good luck to you. Post your thoughts and questions as much as you want. We are all here to help. I dont know of many folks who use just a knife but you may find it rewarding. I also recall a post where a guy used rocks he knapped himself. It can be done.

Literally millions of bows were made with stone and steel hand tools. Take your time with it.

Yup, take your time. Lucky for us, wood is very patient.

In my opinion osage is the best wood to use if you are only using a knife. I have done it so many times now I have actually designed my own knife for the task and will be building it soon. I have even cut the tree down with using only a knife, this knife wilp be superb for that as well. Whats going to be your blade of choice? If you want any tips or pointers let me know. Its super easy and fast if you know what you are doing.
