Title: Xmas bow
Post by: IdahoMatt on December 21, 2014, 01:13:20 am
This is a bow I made for my mothers boyfriends grand kinds.  I will soon be making him a bow as well, as soon as I get the time after other bows for people.  This is a mountain maple stave that was a squirley little thing.  Took a few heat sessions and still kept the kinks in each limb.  It was a beast to tiller and threw me for a loop.  I got it to where I'm okay with it at the weight I wanted with hardly any measureable set.  It's 18# at 20" the bow is about 50" ntn and tips are just under 3/8".  Finish is  acrylic paint and shellac.  Rabit fur silencer and B50 sting.  Thanks for looking

Matt

I don't know if I'm a fan of the green tips but the rest of that bow looks sweet!  Great job on it.

Cool little bow matt, I cut some of this stuff last summer but have yet to get into it.
Is it comparable to vine maple?

To thanks Clint.  I was wondering about the tips myself.  We have just watched brave at my house for the first time.  I thought why not try the green.  I'm glad I did :) it was kinda like arts and craft hour at the Kulchaks :D
Thanks wizard I think it's a little weaker in tension than vine maple. But I've never used vine maple. It wants to fracture if you're not careful.  Still doing tests with this wood.  I'm on the fence about it.
Thanks Simon. The stain was real easy. I just mixed up a color I liked with acrylic paint, then wet a rag and dipped it in the paint and wiped it on.  After it was mostly dry I wiped another coat on the handle and the tips.  I like the way it turned out.
Thanks Rich I sure hope they do thanks
Thanks Chris
Thanks Slim
I wish I was going to be there when they open it Dan.
Thanks Jawge Merry Xmas to you too :)
Thanks Jon

Thats a sharp looking bow Matt. Nice finish work and the green makes me think of a mallards neck feathers.
Great christmas bow for some lucky youngster.

That's a good bow.  My question is, how did you get all those pics on one post?
