Title: help with knife finish
Post by: JEB on December 07, 2014, 06:10:41 pm
I used cholla for a handle and a obsidian knife blade.  I wrapped the area where the blade and the handle meet with black heavier thread for about 1 1/4".  Because I used a thicker thread (leather sewing thread) it will take many coats of poly to make a smooth finish.  what are your thoughts about brushing on epoxy after  a few coats of poly?  This is a gift so I would like to give it a nice finished look.
Your thoughts?

What about the epoxy first, then sand it down smooth.  Apply poly after that.  Should be good , but IDK I've never tried that.

Personally, I would use furniture wax. If you have a buffer it makes a real quick job too... usually I put on a coat of pollution to hold everything down then wax and buff it... definitely turns out shiny!

Got it filled in good with about 20 coats of wipe on poly.  Probably should have used epoxy first as suggested above. Thanks for your suggestions.
