I think I may be able to get usable wood out of these. They are both 47" long and I dont know their age. Guy who gave them to me at work 3 years ago reckoned they have been on the ground for 20+ years. Hope I can do them right. Question is, staves or billets?
-
I say go for it and use them as staves, if it wasn't challenging it wouldn't be so much fun. >:D
I'll have to show you a pic of a tiny toothpick of a bow I'm almost finished with 50#@22"
I'll pm you soon (next week?) about saplings, I not sure what all I have seasoned.
-
Clean both up and see what you actually have before deciding how to use them.
-
Yep looks like quite the Challenge to me, good luck with that. :)

All cleaned up. Lost allota thickness. But I think I still have enough meat. Thinking a set of twin bendy handles. Maybe 40#@25/26"?

Nice save!
-
Thanks, but that was the easy part. We will see if it makes a bow or not then decide if it was a save or a waste of knife hanlde material or a walking stick.
-
Well they are looking good so far anyway. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Eh, they have too much reflex for walking sticks anyway!
-
Gotta love some good character

Still chopping and digging the discolored wood out the rotten knot hole.

Lucky for me it doesnt take much osage to make a bow. This is gonna be what I call a ribbon bow, thin, wide, and having ribbon like curves.

Here we are braced and still in one piece. Thats always a plus.

Now I have reached a delima. Its a good looking bow. I drew it to 25# and heard it start to rip though I see no obvious damage yet. Do I break it to see where and hope I can fix it on its sister stave or keep it as a wall hanger?

Never mind I found it.
-
Its a shame really, such is life. Very brittle wood. Makes me wonder how all these fence post bows survive?

I really think you can save that splinter. Run sum thin superglue intp splinter, quickly unstring, then wrap area with serving set in glue
